Harm from gambling is a public health issue that affects individuals, families, friends and communities. To deal with it effectively, we need a whole-of-community response.
People who participate in low- or moderate-risk gambling experience 85 per cent of the total harm from gambling in Victoria.
In addition, it is estimated that for every person who engages in low-risk gambling, another person is affected. This increases to three people for each person who engages in moderate-risk gambling, and six for high-risk gambling.
Excessive gambling promotion, especially linked to sport, ‘normalises’ gambling activities, shapes community attitudes and encourages more frequent betting, without highlighting the risks of harm.
And harm can happen much earlier than many people realise, the effects of which are felt most severely as family and relationship problems, emotional and psychological issues, and financial losses.
The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation works in partnership with communities, government and industry to deliver innovative initiatives that prevent or reduce gambling harm, overcome stigma and other barriers to help seeking, and offer professional support services to those who experience harm. The Foundation also funds evidence-based research and provides advice to government on strategies to reduce gambling harm.
To stimulate new ideas and bring together people with varied expertise, we engage and collaborate with a diverse range of groups across the state, nationally and internationally. This includes our stakeholders in outer metropolitan, regional and rural areas, Aboriginal and culturally and linguistically diverse communities, local councils, young adults, schools, sporting clubs, academics and health professionals.
Together with the growing body of gambling research and evidence, stakeholder engagement activities underpin everything the Foundation does, because we all have a role to play in working towards a Victoria free from gambling harm.

Engagement principles In working with you, we are guided by five key principles. We are committed to being:

How we engage with youOur stakeholder engagement activities are structured and tailored. We engage in different ways depending on the purpose of the engagement and, importantly, the needs and preferences of individual groups.
Monitoring and evaluation of our engagement program forms part of our business planning processes. We will share key outcomes from these activities through the Foundation’s regular communication channels and collectively via our Annual Report. We will also conduct reviews linked to our principles for engaging with you and use the findings to ensure there is continuous improvement in the way we work together.
At one end of the spectrum, engagement may simply mean ensuring you are well informed about Foundation activities and outcomes. At the other, we may seek more direct input and enter into partnerships.
