Costly CarelessnessAccidents cost Uncle Sam^ family a total of 111,000 hu

man lives and a money loss ot $3,750,000,000 in 1936, according to preliminary figures of the National Safety Council. Thatis an increase of 11,000 lives and $300,000,000 over the 1935 _____ ____toll, and represents an all-time high under both headings. Much eduction in PoI.IhI and !» . ¿raduate of it was preventable

Motor vehicles lulled 38,500 victims in 1936, an increase of 4 per cent over 1935; you can't get away from that increase, in the face of a nationwide campaign for road safety, by citing an increase of 11 per cent in gasoline consumption and 8 per cent in motor registrations. W e still have a screwy 2 per cent of 44,000,000 auto drivers who are responsible for most of the accidents and fatalities, and we have done little to get them off the roads.

A score of states still have nonunul license qualifications, or none at a l l . . . .and they contribute most heavily to the death roll. Urban deaths dropped below the 1935 record; rural areas ■idded 1,600 above their total for the previous year. Pedestrians to the number of 16,650 were killed, an increase of 500 in a year. Occupants of cars made up the other 1,000 increase

Home, sweet home, however, demanded a bigger toll than motor car», with an increase of 7,500, to a total of 39,000 in 1936 Excessive heat took 5,000, falls killed 27,000, bums killed 9,000, firearms, 3,000, and railroad accidents (motor vehicle cases excluded) ended life for 4,000. Children and aged people accounted for most of the home casualties.

A fair-sized y a r could be fought with a fatality list of J 11,090 and a cost of $3,750 millions Only heart <1.^:.^ a broad ierm, ¿an be charged with a higher peril to human life than the carelessness of the accident slayers and their victims.

LEADER

Apparently the gulf-minded residents are much interest«! in the driving contest as suggested in last week s column. Many requests have comc m urging such *n affair. So we will get

_ busy and contact the necessary parties by way of arranging a driviqg contest some time in June. The site will be the driving range at the base of Valley Brook Avenue.— A slight entrance fee may be charged each contestant who wishes to enter competition. However, it probably won’t be more than twenty-five cents, an amount which will not break anyone, and will no doubt prove to be the best twenty-five cents ever spent. W e would appreciate any new suggestions about the forthcoming contest.

In last week's column some irate gentleman voiced his opinion. He must have been a friend of the editor’s to get his letter printed. He signed himself “A Bowler” and berated and told your Observer off something terrible, His reason was my lack ofi bowling news. W e told him that anytime he had bowling news, to send it in to the sports editor of the Leader and we would use it in a promment spot on the «porting page In a P. S. we boldly suggested this column.

But this didn’t seem to make him any more friendly toward the Observer, which person is beginning to believe that the “Bowler" just doesn't like him.

He would have enjoyed hearing that the Observer nearly lost his life last Sunday. Yep, we nearly froze to death in an open boat while flounder fishing in the bleak, wind-swept Oyster Bay. Tommy Connolly, Lou Puntnlillo and your Observer decided to go flounder fishing after listening to the glowing accounts supplied ¡iy Charlie Gailing, of the local police force Charlie told us that he had gone fishing in Lindenhurst and Amit ” * " * ' - - •tyville the Sunday before, and bagged 56 flounders.

That was good news to us, and we decided to lose no time ivi 'X ,1* r, ' . ' ........... ?,e/S *f A nn L i . * # l C • va *«- 1 aA .. . t .* wl. —1— .... • VT . 1 Q

in getting to Long Island Sound, at which place we were going to start hauling in flounders to fill the hag we had brought along for the purpose. However, we found out the winter wasn’t quite over. Being out in a rowboat intensified the weather, and we n«arly died from the cold.

There were many boats out on the Sound and some report ed good catches. W e used s-md worms tor bait. Our tackle consisted of a short boat pole, reel, a four-ounce sinker and a No. 2(0 hook. ’If ic wasn’t so cold we could have snagged a slew of fish. W e did land eleven of them.
