ISLAMABAD, Mar 14:
A conditional non-bailablearrest warrant was today issuedagainst embattled formerPakistani dictator PervezMusharraf after he failed to turnup before the special court hearingthe high treason case against him.
"Non-bailable arrest warranthas been issued which will beimplemented on March 31 in casehe fails to appear before the court,"Abdul Ghani Soomro, Registrar ofthe special court announced.
The defence said they will
challenge the order once theyget a copy of it.
"We will challenge the orderonce we get the order," FaisalChaudhry, a lawyer for 70-year-old Musharraf told the mediaoutside the special court.
The court was adjourned tillMarch 20.
The special court had earlierin the day reserved its judge-ment till afternoon.
The defence had claimedthat Musharraf cannot appeardue to security concerns.
A three-member bench,
headed by Justice Faisal Arab ofthe Sindh High Court, had sum-moned Musharraf today for himto be indicted.
Musharraf's counsel, AnwarMansoor, submitted an applica-tion in the court requesting forhis exemption.
He said the backgroundchecks need to be conducted onthe security personnel deployedfor Musharraf's security and thiswould take at least 6 weeks.
The judge noted that in casehe does not appear, charges willbe read out to the lawyer.
But another Musharraf lawyerAhmed Raza Kasuri countered itsaying that an accused cannot beindicted in absentia.
"It would be very difficult topresent Musharraf before thecourt due to security concerns.The security alert says that hecould be targeted like slainPunjab Governor Salman Taseerby his own bodyguards.(PTI)
