Frey Vineyards is the oldest and largest purely organic winery in the UnitedStates. We were also the first in the country to produce Biodynamic® wines in1996. Our vineyards and winery are nestled on the slopes of the Redwood ValleyA.V.A. (American Viticultural Area) in Mendocino County, California. All grapesfor the organic wines are grown in accordance with the USDA organic standardsand certified by Stellar Certification Services. For the estate-bottled Biodynamic®wines, the grapes are grown in accordance with the Demeter Association stan-dards. Our wines are made without adding any sulfites, leaving them free to reveal their delicate and true flavors. Emphasis is on producing wine of the highest quality while caring for the planet and palate alike.

What is Organic WineWine without added sulfites. Under the USDANational Organic Program, Frey Wines are Organicwines because they are made from certified organicgrapes and contain no additives such as sulfites orcitric acids. This allows us to bear the USDA organ-ic symbol. Wines that use organic grapes, but addsulfites or other additives, can only be labeled“Made with organically grown grapes” andare not allowed to bear the USDA organic symbol.
No Sulfites AddedThe use of sulfites as a food preservative has led many consumers to seek wines without sulfites. For years it has been a common practice to add sulfites to wine as a preservative. When used in winemaking, manufactured synthetic sulfites are added as sulfursalts or sulfur dioxide solutions to the grape juicebefore fermentation, and also before bottling.Sometimes winemakers can be excessive in their useof sulfites, which has the effect of masking the deli-cate flavors, assaulting the nose, and causingheadaches and allergic reactions to sulfite-sensitivepeople. Today, modern winemaking equipment andsanitation with steam sterilization make it possiblefor Frey Vineyards to produce sound wines withoutsuch additives.
What is Biodynamic Wine?Biodynamic Farming is the oldest comprehensive sys-tem of organic agriculture, started in 1924 by Austranphilosopher Rudolf Steiner. Biodynamic farms striveto be self-sustaining organisms within their surround-ing ecosystem. The name comes from the Greek word“bio,” which means life-energy. Frey Vineyards is cer-tified by Demeter USA, an affiliation of the interna-tional organization Demeter, which certifiesBiodynamic farms worldwide. Demeter standards arestricter than organic standards and emphasize farmanimals, soil and plant sprays, and compost prepara-tions which enhance and regulate plant growth

GMO Free Mendocino CountyIn March of 2004, the voters of Mendocino Countypassed a citizens’ initiative that prohibited the growingof genetically-engineered plants and animals. TheFrey family actively participated in the campaign andis very proud to be part of the first GMO-Free Zone inthe U.S. Frey Vineyards remains committed to educa-tion and legal efforts to halt the spread of GMOs(genetically modified organisms) around the world.
