AbstractInthispaper,weseektoinvestigatetheperformanceoftransmission
switchingusingtheiterativelinearprogramapproximationtotheCurrentVoltageACOptimalPowerFlow IV‐ACOPF .SeveraldifferentmethodsofusingthisswitchingareinvestigatedtofindamethodthataddressestheMIPchallengesandisbothfastandaccurate.Weconsideropeningonlyoneline,openinguptofivelines,andprogressivelyopeningonelineatatime.ThelinearmethodwithswitchingismuchfasterthanthenonlinearACOPFandgenerallyfindssolutionswithin1%ofthenonlinearACOPF.

1. IntroductionInagivenelectricpowernetwork,sometransmissionlinesareoftenoutof
serviceduetooutagesormaintenance.However,ofthelinesthatremainoperable,removingadditionallinesmayreducethetotalpowergenerationcost.Powercompaniesusethispracticeintimesoflowload,butoftenuseexperienceandintuitionwithreliabilitytesting;thatis,withoutexplicitlysearchingfortheoptimaltopology.ThebenefitoftransmissionswitchinghasbeendemonstratedbyFisheret.al. 2008 andHedmanet.al. 2008 bysolvinga‘DC’approximationofthealternatingcurrentoptimalpower ACOPF flowsystem.Hedmanet.al. 2008 achievedsavingsofover20%byswitchinglinesoffversustheoriginalnetworkontheIEEE118bustestcase.Evenwhentheconsideringnetworkcontingencies,transmissionswitching againusingthe‘DC’approximation canstillprovidesubstantialbenefits.Hedmanet.al. 2008 showthatopeningfivelinesreducescostsby8%intheN‐1compliantRTS‐96system.PotluriandHedman 2012 suggestthatswitchinghassignificantbenefitsovermaintainingastaticnetworkwhensolvingthefullACOPF.TheyalsodemonstratethatanimprovementinthesystemcostusingtheDCsolutionproceduredoesnotalwaysgivealowercostintheoriginalACsystem.Infact,theDCsolutionwithlineswitchingisACinfeasibleorincreasesthesystemcostovernoswitchinginseveralinstances.
ThenonlinearACOPFtransmissionswitchingproblemisrarelysolvedduetoitshighcomputationalintensity.Inpractice,theOPFissolvedusingtheDCapproximationanditerationsthattrytoobtainACfeasibilityandN‐1reliability.InordertosolvethenonlinearACOPFwithbinaryvariables,thesolvercouldpossiblybranchoneverycombinationofopened/closedlinesinthenetworkandsolveanonlinearprogram NLP foreachdifferentinstance,whichisprohibitivelycomputationallyexpensiveatthecurrenttime.IfthereareNlines,thiscouldrequiresolving2Nnonlinearprograms.Inaddition,thenonlinearprogramisnonconvex.
Mixedintegerlinearprograms MIPs generallysolvemuchfasterthanmixedintegernonlinearprograms.However,evensolvingaMIPcanalsobequitetime‐intensive,asonemayneedtosolvethelinearprogram LP 2Ntimes;however,techniquesforsolvingMIPshavesignificantlyreducedthisupperbound.
Onewaytolimitthenumberofbranchesistoconstrainthenumberoflinesallowedtobeopen.Althoughnotnecessarilyoptimal,theapproachfindsabettersolutionthanthestatusquo SeeHedmanetal,Fulleretal,andRuizetal,2012 andisoftenveryclosetotheoptimalsolution.Ourworkinthispaperalsoshowsthatopeningmorelinespastacertainnumberhasnoorlittlebenefit.
IfthesystemisforcedtoopenSlines,thenthenumberofbranchesforLPsintheMIPisNchooseS.However,intheDCmodel,itisneveroptimaltoopenlinesthatislandpartsofthenetwork seeOstrowskietal,2012 .Inaconnected

network,youcantravelfromanybusofthenetworktoanyotherbusviatransmissionlines althoughonemayhavetotravelthroughotherbuses .“Islanding”meansthattherearepairsofbusesthatarenotconnectedbyanypath.Aka,aconnectednetworkwouldbeonecircle,andanetworkwithislandingwouldbetwocircles;youcouldnevertravelfromabusinthefirstcircletothebusinthesecondcircle.Therefore,onecanreducetheMIPbranchandboundtreebyremovinganypathsthatresultinislanding.Toafirstorderapproximation,webelievethisistrueforACnetworks.Inthispaper,wehavenotimplementedthisprocedure.
Anadditionalissueisthatourlinearprogramisnotstatic;rather,itisbasedonthelastiteration seeO’Neilletal,2012andCampaigneetal,2013 .Ourlinearizationdependsonthepreviousoptimalpoint.However,wemaythenswitchthenetworkbasedonarevisedlinearizationinalateriteration.
Thispaperseekstoaddressthefollowingquestions: DoesthelinearizedACOPFselectlinestoswitchinaccordancewiththenonlinear
ACOPF? HowmuchfasteristheiterativelinearizedACOPFcomparedtothenonlinear
ACOPF? Howwelldotheproposedheuristicsperform?

IterativeLinearizedACOPFwithaMIPateveryiterationopeningupto5linesMoreextensively,theACOPFwasrunforopeningupto5lines.Thislimitonthenumberoflinesopenedwasplacedtoachieveareasonableruntime.Additionally,allowingtheprogramopenuptotenlinesdidnotresultinsignificantreductionofthetotalpowerproductioncostversusallowingittoopen5lines.Theprocedureisrepeatedfor4differentapproaches:16and32preprocessedvoltagecutswithlinearandquadraticvoltagestepsizereduction.

nonlinearACOPFprogramsweresolvedonafixedconfigurationofopen/closedlinesforallpossibleconfigurationsofonelineopenandallothersclosed theBruteForceMethod .Theobjectivefunctionvaluesofalltheseconfigurationsarecompared,andthe‘best’answeristheproblemwiththelowestobjectivefunctionvalue.ThisBruteForceapproachiscomparedtosolvingtheproblemwiththelinearizedACOPFandallowingthemixedintegersolvertofindthebestnetworkconfigurationwithonelineout MIP .Thenonlinear“bruteforce”methodusesIPOPTtosolveeverypossiblenetworkconfigurationwithonelineout,andtheobjectivevaluegivenistheminimumcostofalloftheseconfigurations.Thenonlinear“MIP”methodusesKNITROtosolvethenonlinearMIPwithoneopenline.

6. SummaryFromthisstudy,weseethattransmissionswitchingprovidescostbenefitsin

TheoneMIPapproachsolvesthe14and30busproblemsquickerthantherepeatedMIPapproachandwithin4%orlessoftherepeatedMIPobjectivevalue.However,whiletheoneMIPapproachhasfastperformanceinthe57and118busproblems,boththeoneandrepeatedMIPapproachesfindworsesolutionsthannotswitchinganylinesinmanyofthecases.Inthelargernetworks,itappearsthatthereareeithermultipleoptimalsolutionsormultiplenetworkconfigurationsthathaveaverysimilarcost. ThelinearizedACOPFismuchfasterthantheunmodifiedACOPFandusuallyfindssolutionswithin1%oftheACOPF.TheprogressiveandoneMIPapproachesaremuchfasterthantherepeatedMIPapproachandgenerallygiveanswerswithin1%oftherepeatedMIPapproach.However,thereareinstanceswherethe

linearizedACOPFfindsanoptimalnetworkconfigurationthatisnotfeasibleintheunmodifiedACOPF,duetothelinearizedACOPFfindingasolutionwithvoltagesthatarebelowtheminimumthreshold.
