Welcome to Open Studios Cornwall 2011

This is the seventh year that Creative Skills has run Open Studios and this is our biggest event yet, with 205 artists and craftspeople opening their doors across Cornwall!

With artists working in venues ranging from historic, beachside studios to converted cowsheds and remote cottages, Open Studios Cornwall 2011 is a celebration of the diverse and wonderful range of artwork that is created in one of the most varied and visually stunning landscapes in Britain.

Creative Skills is delighted to welcome Truro Arts as the main sponsor of Open Studios Cornwall 2011. If visiting the artists this year inspires you to take up pencil, brushes and paint, then a trip to Truro Arts might be just what you need!

We want you to be able to make the most of Open Studios Cornwall 2011 and so we would like to give you a few ‘guidelines’ to help.

Using this guide

The Open Studios Cornwall 2011 guide is designed to be easy to use. It is divided into West, Mid and North/East Cornwall and within each section, artists are ordered geographically then alphabetically. If you are planning to visit a particular area, such as Falmouth or St Ives, you can look up which artists are in that district. And, if you intend to visit a particular artist, you can find out who else is in their neighbourhood.

Remember that opening times vary. Not all of the participants will be exhibiting for the whole week, so check the opening times before you visit.

Each venue will be clearly indicated by an Open Studios Cornwall sign.

The wheelchair access information given in the entries is only a rough guide to accessibility. If you have particular access needs, it is a good idea to phone the exhibitor in advance.

Most exhibitors will be happy to take a deposit to reserve an artwork and make arrangements for you to collect it at a convenient time. They will put a red sticker on it; make sure that you get a receipt.

You can commission work from some artists but make sure that what is agreed is confirmed in writing.

Pick up the artist’s information card if you like their work, so that you remember where they are and can contact them again if you want to buy more of their artworks.

Feedback is essential for the future development of Open Studios Cornwall. This year we have produced a questionnaire, which the artist will ask you to complete. If you can find the time to complete it you may win a bottle of champagne for your trouble!

Lastly, don’t forget your cheque book! Most exhibitors are not able to take payment by credit card – but cash will do nicely, thank you!

KROWJI

Creative Skills run Open Studios Cornwall from their office in Redruth’s former Grammar School – now known as Krowji (Cornish for shed or small cottage), a vibrant creative community and Cornwall’s foremost sector-based business cluster.

Krowji houses many of Cornwall’s key strategic cultural and creative industries projects, along with a wide range of creative businesses and practitioners – a total of about 120 people at the moment. The complex integrates creative workspaces, a wi-fi enabled café, meeting rooms and hot desking facilities with business support and information, advice and guidance services for practitioners and creative businesses, as well as playing a role in the regeneration of Redruth and the surrounding area.

Krowji is owned and run by ACT – Cornwall Arts Centre Trust, the parent company of

Creative Skills. It’s home to a number of arts organisations including Creative Skills, Carn to Cove, the FEAST programme, Miracle Theatre, Cornwall Film Festival, Cornwall Council’s Creative Services team, Cornwall Youth Music Action Zone and MyCornwall.

The studios

Krowji has about 45 studios, ranging in size from tiny cubby-holes at about 60 square feet up to shared spaces of 1,000 square feet or more. They all have 24 hour, 365 days access, natural light and electricity, as well as access to some office services by arrangement. Tenancy agreements are on easy in/out terms.

There’s a real mix of artforms here, from furniture makers to photographers to web designers to painters to jewellers to textile makers to ceramicists. There’s also a large rehearsal space and several meeting rooms available to hire by the hour or day. See our website at www.krowji.org.uk for more details.

Studios to rent become available on a regular basis so if you’re interested please contact Elisa McLeod on 01209 313200 or email her at [email protected]

The Melting Pot café is also here, so if you visit the many Krowji artists during Open Studios Cornwall you will be able to enjoy the delights of homemade cake and fair-trade teas and coffees. The café is fully licensed and provides an all day menu.

14I paint the changing shapes and colours of landscape beneath cloud shadow and sunlight. I pursue that elusive image which can slip between memory hand and eye, just out of reach. The designs of my jewellery and textile pieces are influenced by objects found along the shore and impressions left by sea over sand.Directions: Botallack is about 1 mile north of St Just in Penwith. Cresswell Terrace is just beyond the main part of Botallack on the B3306 towards Pendeen. Enter via the access lane between No 5 and No 6, turn right behind the Terrace, park opposite No 9.

My practice attempts to challenge the hegemonic. The performances engage with the culturally acceptable, humour, childlike behaviour, the macabre, and the Gothic. The essence of the subject matter against the expression helped me to consider what the genuine values of drawing/painting could be! Light against the dark, dark against the light. Energy/form. In my paintings I have searched for a soft and sensual surface that can reflect a refracted light. By accumulating very thin layers of oil paint I try to create a subtle, sensual graduation of colour, a genuine building of light out of darkness. Colours that silently contribute to the impression of depth, the reflection of a landscape of shade and light breathing and suggesting memory fading or coming into being.Directions: From A30, take main Redruth exit and follow A3047 towards Pool/Camborne. In my paintings images are naturally fragmented by glass; objects are given a shadow, a softer faded replica or an outline. Dappled sunlight shines through trees and vertical streaks of light reflect off window panes. This work began with sketching of the holes in the rocks at Trebarwith. I experimented with the nature of holes, emotional and physical, how they are there and not there. The tide is constantly deconstructing the beach and putting it back together around fixed objects. There and then not there.Directions: From A30/A38 follow signs to Bodmin. At mini roundabout (at St Petroc’s Church) take 1st exit left and proceed to traffic lights next to Barclays Bank. Look right and you will see Shire Hall. Parking at rear. Wheelchair access. 10am–5pm

Once you are on the moor continue straight ignoring the left turn to St Breward. South Kerrow is on your right at the top of rise. Pull in and park.
