Curriculum As you may be aware the state of North Carolina has
adopted the common core curriculum. We will be using the common core for the 2013-2014 school year. These common core objectives effect every curriculum area. There will be many changes in what is being taught at each grade level. If you would like more information on specific directions please visit www.corestandards.org for a complete expiation for what is being taught.
Last year Weatherstone become a STEM school. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We will incorporate STEM in many of our lessons. We also will have STEM Fridays which will be facilitated by our PTA.
We will use the NCSU engineering model to facilitate teaching.
Print Concepts
We are using MCLASS to assess these skills.
MCLASS is an online tool that lets us know a composite score to help us guild our instruction.
Red indicates the students needs interventions to meet benchmark goals.
Yellow indicates a student may need interventions to meet the benchmark goals.
Green indicates the child is on target for quarterly benchmarks.
BEFORE READING:Point out the front and back of the book.
Point to the title on the cover and on the title page.Identify the author and the illustrator.
Take time to look at the pictures in the book.
DURING READING:Point to each word as the book is read.
Clarify any new unknown words.Identify various punctuation marks.
Allow child to predict what may happen next.Notice rhyming words.
AFTER READING:Talk about the beginning, the middle, and the ending.
Talk about the characters and their problems/solutions.Ask comprehension questions (who, what, when, where…)

Birthdays
Birthday treats must be store-bought and not homemade. You may send in a treat for the entire class on your child’s birthday. Please make sure they are individual treats. We will enjoy them during snack.
Birthday Invitations: Per Wake County policy, teachers are not allowed to hand out invitations in daily folders.

How You Can Help Me… Please empty and check blue folders every day.
Please return.
Please read/fill out notes in folders and return. We are under a paper restriction this year due to budget cuts and we cannot afford to make multiple copies of notes.
Please do not send your child in sick! Kids are getting sick and so are
the teachers. Children must be fever free (without using Tylenol) for 24
hours and vomit/diarrhea free for 12 hours before returning.
How You Can Help Me cont. Please pack a healthy snack daily.
Please be cognizant of the amount of money on your child’s lunch account.
If you are assigned to volunteer on a certain day, please be sure to arrive on time. We count on you! Remember you must sign up on the volunteer registry in order to volunteer in the classroom. Volunteer opportunities include learning experiences, Book and Bite, and field trips.

minutes and work on retelling. Identify colors and shapes
