T hank you for supporting our local community event. All our talented gardeners and artists have been

working hard to ensure we all have a lovely day wandering around Queen’s Park looking at beautiful things, be they flowers, shrubs, art, jewellery or ceramics. There will be lots to see. For the first time, there are four artists exhibiting their work on Lonsdale Road, three at number 31 and one at 4b and this year we are delighted to introduce nine new gardens and studios for you to visit, identified in the programme by a new green or purple leaf logo. Take a welcome break to enjoy delicious home-made cakes and tea in the leafy surroundings of our Tea Garden, accompanied by music from the Palace Band and the Queen’s Park Junior Singers. In the park, there will be music on the bandstand and two exhibitions for you to see. The Queen’s Park Portrait Project will be showing “Double Take”, local people photographed by local photographers – twice! Transition Town K2K will be showing “Old Stories for New Times” about how local people lived in the past. There’ll be Sharon Essor and Judith Rose showing bees, ladybirds and caterpillars and the RSPB with wildlife activities for children.Thank you to all the gardeners and artists for opening their homes and welcoming us in and to the members of Queen’s Park Area Residents’ Association working to make the event possible. Any surplus from the day goes towards greening our area. You can see some examples of what we’ve already achieved on page 26 of this programme.

Open Garden & Music from 3.30 to 4.30pm Plant Stall from Meadowview NurseryThe walled garden’s pergola with grape vines, terracotta pots and the stone fountain with putti give the garden an Italian feel, but the planting is very British with delphiniums, phlox and foxgloves. The pergola overlooks a circular lawn with a pond and deep beds on three sides with shrubs and perennials, backed by espalier trained fruit trees. A shady walkway between a wall-trained fig and a climbing hydrangea leads to the working patio with a small greenhouse, compost bins, a water butt and a prolific wall trained Victoria plum.

Open Garden & StudioThis year, I re-planted the left back border in the garden as the Choisya ternata, the Bamboo and the Euphorbia mellifera were all so healthy and large, they were beginning to take over the garden. It has given me the opportunity to plant a new Hebe salicifolia, which is a delicate and stunning shrub, a hebe rakaiensis, as well as adding more Crocosmia and lots of Geranium “Johnsons Blue” and some Cosmos “Sonata”.I have just repainted the fences with the wonderful ‘matisse’ blue as my neighbours re built the fence on our right side.

Open GardenOne of the original gardeners to take part in the very first Open Gardens back in the 90s when he opened his large, Mediterranean style ‘exotic’ twin gardens. This year, he will only be opening his small front garden but will still have rare and unusual plants for sale and advice to give. NB Bruce is a plantsman specializing only in Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants such as aloe veras, hardy palm and olive trees, bamboos, cacti and succulents - No bedding!

Open Garden & StudioThis will be my 5th Queen’s Park Open Studio and 10 years on, I continue to work in my home studio and enjoy the opportunity to show my ceramics to friends and neighbours. The pieces are still completely hand made, white earthenware clay rolled, pressed, coiled and slabbed, finished to offer an ideal surface for decoration using stencils, underglazes and slips.I confess to enjoying the decorating process the most, quite addictive!

Open Garden & StudioThis year in addition to a few portraits of children in ink or pastel, I will be showing some fun collage images of local shops which also feature a dog or two sitting outside. My recent ink and watercolour portraits of local dogs and some linocuts prints of wild animals will also be shown. Both images on the left have been used to make greetings cards and bookmarks which will also be in the show.

Sue Aron7 Lynton Road NW6 6BD07939 115 [email protected]

Open GardenFramed by a large glass window in the kitchen, the garden is an extension to our living space and a haven for birds attracted by year round feeding. A good mix of plants, shrubs and small trees – Acer ‘Senkaki’, Ginkgo biloba, Rowan ‘Pink Pagoda’ and this Spring the Westmorland Damson has finally flowered! Last Autumn the garden was pruned back heavily to create more space for new planting. The garden has benefitted enormously from more light with the pruning of a mature pear tree and the enormous ash tree in our neighbouring gardens. There is a tiny hidden pond for frogs and wildlife.

Open Garden & StudioAfter a lifetime of figurative painting, these painted collages are the result of a year spent embracing abstraction. This long and narrow garden is divided into four sections, partly by design and partly because the growth of large trees at the bottom has turned a once sunny, south facing garden into one whose lower half is deepl.y shaded. The four zones and their varied. planting reflect the journey from light to dark.

7Sandy Crole4 Donaldson Road NW6 6NB020 7625 [email protected]

Open Garden & StudioThis shady garden is built around a rough oval of lawn and offers a mix of shrubs, climbers and perennials. As there’s not usually a lot of sun, the planting concentrates on leaf shapes and texture, with the odd bloom showing. Hosta, fern, viburnum and the odd rarity will be visible, including two actinidias. The studio is becoming more of a potting shed, but heroic resistance is being put up by ink and watercolour pictures of English landscape, especially churches.

Open StudioI have spent this year having fun and discovering new techniques down at the London Print Studio in Harrow Road. Some of my work has been made using a little known technique based on the mutually repelling properties of etching ink and water. Other pieces make use of coloured tissue and glue. With the aid of an etching press the possibilities seem to be inexhaustible.

Exhibiting a new range for outdoor garden lighting.“Light is one of the most magical forces, it is the most important element in our world and therefore within our home. I am inspired and in awe by light and to be able to work with such a magical force and then to select materials which control, capture, direct and enhance - it is the best part of the world we live in.” CP Lighting Design studio is an independent lighting consultancy.

Open StudioShapes, found and then obliterated for another, create black on black palimpsests, which buckle in places and fray in others; edges pulsate. I am interested in Paul Klee’s notion of ‘Reverberation’ being an infinite motion moving between the fervid contrast of utter black and utter white. Educated at Chelsea and Byam Shaw School of Art (1985-89), MA at City & Guilds of London Art School (2015-17).

Open StudioMost of the work in this show is an exploration in stitch and paint of a poppy image, depicting poppies from buds to flowers to seed heads. Some of these textiles have been painted, mono printed and tea-dyed. Cleaning cloths used after painting and printing take up colour in surprising combinations getting a new lease of life in an artwork. No commercially dyed fabrics were used – all were painted or dyed in my kitchen. The stitched quilting lines bring the works to life by creating texture, depth and in some pieces, an extra layer of colour.

Open Garden & StudioMy ceramic practice has recently concentrated on making vessels (vases and bowls), many of which will be exhibited during this event. In addition, I was lucky enough to visit the north west of USA last year (including a visit to Yellowstone National Park) which provided wonderful photographic opportunities. Also on show will be hand-made books, cards, small ceramic sculptures, candle-holders and tiles. The garden provides a tranquil but colourful outdoor space in which to relax and also to display some of my ceramic sculptures.

Henrietta Green17 Hopefield Avenue NW6 6LJ020 8969 086607961 300 [email protected]

Open GardenOpen for the first time ever this year, my garden will, hopefully, offer an abundance of blowsy cottagey flowers chosen for their shapes and scents – think astrantia, jasmine, lilies, poppies, peonies, honeysuckle and a range of roses. As a flower fanatic – look no lawn – I have crammed as much as possible into a terraced house’s small garden that includes a relatively new shed/office aka “shoffice”. In a vain attempt to introduce discipline, I have restricted my colour palette – only white, cream, pink and dark wine-red flowers and leaves are allowed!

Open StudioSt Anne’s and St Andrew’s is the home of two church communities – St Anne’s Church of England Parish Church; and St Andrew’s United Reformed Church. While both churches have been in Queen’s Park for over 100 years, they agreed to build a shared community building in 1998 – and also to host the London Inter Faith Centre. We are a busy community space hosting many local community groups, including QPARA meetings. During Open Gardens and Studios we are hosting 3 local artists, and the whole building will be open for you to explore including a wondrous view of the Cemetery from within the church space.

Open StudioMy recent experiences of walking the Camino Way in Northern Spain and painting in the landscape of Snowdonia in North Wales have inspired me to paint these pieces of contemporary mixed media watercolours. Using colour and pastels I have expressed my interpretation of walking the Camino Way. I have used mixed media and Acrylic for the landscape of Snowdonia. My faith inspires me to paint bright colourful images of the natural world.

Open StudioI am inspired by portraits to capture the essence of the person. I absolutely love still life; portraits and landscapes – capturing the ordinary to elevate ourselves into something super. Photographs take us to another place, at our desks in a busy working environment, glimpsing a picture taking you away to a place of calm.Pictures make us feel something; finding calm and a different voice. I love people, shapes, light and dance and the complex relationships in between.

Open StudioI’m a mixed media artist who’s currently hooked on working in glass. Frequently the starting point is my life sketches, which I recreate with wire and set into the glass. Whether it’s an encounter with statues at Neasden Temple, a couple in conversation or a comical surfer, the images tell stories of people, places and the natural world.I love the vivid colours and the way glass catches the light, when displayed in a window it changes with the daylight.

Open GardenOver the years many of you will have visited this garden and enjoyed the camomile lawn.Last March we began an extension to our kitchen so much of the garden had to be uprooted and held in containers over the winter. We have put new slate on the hard paving and have replanted the beds. As I write, I have no idea how it will look but do come along and see how my garden has grown.

Open StudioMosaic: the joy of shards, one of the oldest forms of ornamentation. My work combines traditional materials – marble, ceramic, glass and stone – with less traditional (like shattered car windscreen) in an exploration of the creative possibilities. Mosaic is wonderfully artisanal, revealing the smell of flint when it’s split, the friable nature of marble, and the eternal possibilities to recreate what has been broken. I will be demonstrating on the day, and sharing some of these possibilities.

Open StudioThe core of the work I’m showing today is a series of 25 small embroideries called ‘Dolly’. They feature a small rag doll in many varied situations.I always work by hand, never using sewing machines, as this gives me much more flexibility - there is an unbroken chain of thought from my head, through my hands, to the canvas, during the long hours of stitching.I really enjoy learning new skills and using them in my work - crochet, tapestry, knitting, lace-making, applique and blackwork all feature in ‘Dolly’

Open GardenArriving thirty-five years ago, we found a garden with few plants, almost no flowers, and a long, high Edwardian privacy hedge which hid the old kitchen from view. The privet went and we added the terrace, more paving, deeper beds and brick planters. We initially planted for low maintenance with a number of evergreen climbers and shrubs, which remain as the framework. MUSIC: Please bring an instrument and/or voice to play along. ART: Selection of arts and crafts to view.

Anna Jansz141 Chevening Road NW6 6DZ

Open Garden Tea, Cake and Music from 2.30 to 5.30pmThe garden changes slowly over time. Gradually a little colour has been introduced against the backdrop green foliage that forms a progression of spaces, from the vine covered pergola through and beneath the fruit trees to the rockery bank with the shrubs and trees at the end, which are pruned as theatre ‘flats’ to further accentuate perspective from the house. Then there is the side view through the gate to Glenis, which happily combines our two gardens.

20

Glenis Pearson143 Chevening Road NW6 6DZ(entrance via garden at 141 Chevening Rd)

Open GardenThe garden was formed from two existing ones. It was designed on a napkin over dinner, aiming for a series of “rooms”: a patio with encaustic tiles continuing from the kitchen, a large central grass play area, a Japanese themed pond and a “castle of fish”, a sun-warmed brick east terrace to sit and watch sunsets or stars, a woodland garden with climbing frame and home-made Wendy house, plus a gardener’s part with shed, small greenhouse and compost heaps. Special mention must be given to the oak tree which was grown from an acorn.

Open StudioMy studio is situated on the side of our family house, overlooking the garden, which is a constant source of inspiration for me.I am an artist/designer maker who works with clay.I use two types of clay: porcelain a beautiful, white material which becomes translucent when fired to a high temperature and white earthenware clay excellent for throwing pieces on the wheel. I make one off light pieces and tableware.

Double Take

Local people photographed by local photographers - twice! For the last three years we have been taking portraits at local events. Each person gets photographed by two different photographers leading to two different interpretations of the same person. Placed side by side the differences, and similarities, are quite compelling. We are exhibiting the portraits for the first time in Queen’s Park, the place where it all started. Are you in one of the photographs, or is there someone you recognise? Come and have a look.

Open GardenMy garden, started from scratch quite late in life, is an aid to memory, with plants and shrubs representing friends, family members, or phases of my life. Two roses from an earlier garden still thrive and connect to the past. Learning as I go, I’m trying to create a tableau viewed from the house, with secrets to reward exploration. My niece Paula’s statement artwork was made for her parents. Paula has made abstract metal sculptures for over 25 years.

The Park

Queen’s Park was opened by the Lord Mayor of London in November 1887.

Since then it has been enjoyed by thousands of visitors and has evolved over the years to offer a range of activities – from tennis and the children’s playground to bird walks and Queen’s Park Day organised by QPARA. It is managed by the City of London with regular consultation with QPARA; working together to ensure the park is maintained to a high standard and offers opportunities for leisure, recreation and relaxation while also encouraging biodiversity and enjoyment of visitors.

The Quiet Garden

The transformation of the Quiet Garden in Queen’s Park continues to develop

throughout all four seasons of the year.In the last couple of years particular attention has been given to enhancing the natural area at the south end of the gardens that leads down to the newly refurbished Lych Gate. With spring in mind this area has been planted out with Dwarf Narcissi that give a burst of yellow blooms that herald the end of the long winter months. Their arrival is complemented with softer pastel shades in the form of woodland plants including Bluebells, Snowdrops and Snake’s Head Fritillaries, that thrive in this shaded area of the gardens. If you would like to find out more about this much loved area of Queen’s Park, meet the gardener sessions are being held in the Quiet Garden with our Head Gardener, Ian, sharing his considerable horticultural knowledge with the public. These hourly sessions are held on Saturdays and the dates and times are advertised on the notice boards in the park and in the café.

Did we live more simply and with less waste and more neighbourliness in Queen’s Park and Kilburn long ago? Transition Town K2K with the Brent Museum invite you to their Heritage Lottery Funded exhibition.Stories of making do, growing your own, and community connections. The exhibition is dedicated to day-to-day life and community life in Kilburn, Kensal Green, Brondesbury and Mapesbury in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960s before cheap oil and consumerism took the world by storm.

Queen’s Park Allotment is now in its third year. We grow organic vegetables, herbs and fruit plus some flowers to attract beneficial insects and keep pests under control. We are a mixture of new and experienced gardeners. Some members planted their first ever vegetable seed this April! We look after our individual mini-plots and also garden together once a month. The allotment was set up under the auspices of Kensal-Kilburn Transition and has been generously supported by the management team at Queen’s Park. All the mini-plots are currently taken but there is a possibility of more space being made available if the demand is there. Come along and see our work and let us know if you’re interested.

to live, work and play. I am immensely proud to be QPARA’s Chair and it gives me such pleasure when I see what this

organisation can achieve. We are a diverse body of people, and if you are not already a member, please consider joining; you can get fully involved and take an active part in events or you

can attend meetings and express your ideas or you can just keep up with Queen’s Park news by reading the minutes and the newsletter. Visit our membership table at the Tea Garden

or go to our website www.qpark.org.uk to find out more about QPARA and how to join.

This is just one of two major community events in 2016. Our annual Queen’s Park Day is on Sunday 18 September and planning for this much loved event is well under way.

Whether you are a Queen’s Park resident or a visitor to the area, I would like to wish you a wonderful day

visiting our gardens and studios.
