How to Wear Your Uniform
First put on your uniform
top. For the sake of
modesty, girls should
always wear a T-shirt or
sports bra under their
uniform top.
Put on your uniform pants.
Tie the drawstring in the
front with a bow.
Tuck the right side of the
uniform top under the left side.
If your top has ties, the
right side should tie to
the inside of the left side,
and the left side should tie to the outside of the
right side.
Remember: Your top should be tucked
right side under left side. Tucking the left
side under the right side is only done when
you are mourning the death of someone
important to you.
To tie your belt, first
hold the belt in the
middle in both hands
in front of you. If
you have stripes on
your belt, make sure
you hold the belt so
that the stripes are to
your right.
Hold the belt against
your stomach below
your belly button. Try
not to let it touch the
ground while you are
tying it.
Bring the ends around
behind your back,
crossing in the middle.
Bring the ends to the
front.

How to Wear Your Uniform Pg 1
How to Wear Your Uniform
Cross the left end of
the belt over the
right end and then
tuck it up under both
loops.
Pull both ends to tighten.
Bend the end that was
passed under both loops
down and loop it around
the other end and then
under itself and through.
Pull both ends to tighten.
Finished knot should
look like a “U” pointing
to the left. Stripes should
end up on the left side
when finished.
Parents, please help teach your child to tie
their belt. It may take time, but if they can tie
their shoes, they can tie their belt.
Remember: Don’t wash your belt, or it will shrink.
Before the use of colored belts, it used to be taught that
washing your belt would release your energy. And so, the
more experienced you were, the dirtier your belt became,
until it eventually turned black.

Ranking System
A ranking system of colored belts is used to reflect the experience and ability of the
student. However, since everyone is different, rank is not relative. Each student is working
against his/herself, not against anyone else. Rank also does not indicate a certain level of
fighting ability. It is not required that you are capable of defeating anybody.
There is no ranking system that is universally accepted. Many different organizations have
developed their own ranking systems along with their own unique ranking requirements.
The requirements for each level (usually referred to as a kyu) vary in different schools and
organizations, and even the colors of the belts and their order are sometimes different.
Some schools even have different ranking systems between their youth and adult
programs. The amount of time spent in each level may also vary between schools.
Originally, when karate was being developed on the island of Okinawa, there was no
ranking system used. People did not get promoted for learning a new kata or displaying
any level of technical aptitude. They did not receive a new belt or a certificate confirming
their level of proficiency. In fact, they didn't even wear a karate uniform. These are all
relatively recent inventions. When Gichin Funakoshi brought karate to Japan from
Okinawa, he adopted the ranking system designed by Jigaro Kano, the founder of Judo. He
also decided to use to same uniform.
Here at Wake Forest Christian Karate & Kobudo we use a 10 kyu (level) system for our
kids program. Our goal is to ensure that the students mature mentally, physically, and
morally as they advance. Therefore, the earliest age that a student will achieve the level of
Shodan (1st
degree black belt) would be the age of 16.
In the Do Shin Tai Kan Dojo we use the following colored belts for our youth programs:

How to Make a Proper Fist Bend your index finger so that the first knuckle touches the second knuckle of your thumb,
tucking in the fold of skin that is between your thumb and index finger. Then fold your other
fingers tightly into a fist, pressing the fingertips into your palm. Fold your thumb across the first
knuckles of your first and middle fingers. Your thumb should now be under your fist, not on top
or on the side of your fist. Thumb is underneath fist.
When you punch, the objective is to strike with the first two knuckles.
Strike with these knuckles. Make sure that your
wrist is straight, not
bent.
How to Make a Knife Hand Point your index finger. Place your middle finger against your index finger, bending the middle
finger until its tip is even with the tip of your index finger.

1) Double solar plexus punch – front stance: Start with left hand forward, right hand on
hip (chambered) with palm side up, and left foot forward stance.
Left Forward Stance First Punch Second Punch
Correct Chamber Incorrect Chambers
Punch to middle of chest, first with right hand and then with left hand. As right hand
punches, it should come straight forward from the hip, palm side up, and then turn over at
the last six inches of the punch, to the solar plexus (middle of chest). At the same
time, the left hand should come straight back, palm side down, and then turn over at the
last six inches, and be re-chambered on the hip. Then the left hand should punch to the
solar plexus and the right hand be re-chambered. (Repeat with right hand forward, left
hand on hip, and right foot forward stance).

Escape Techniques (#1) Escape techniques are non-confrontational techniques meant to be used to escape from an
attacker. The intent of these techniques is to teach a student to not let themselves be touched,
grabbed, or caught by enforcing in them the habits of constantly being on alert and being ready
to move. These techniques differ from self-defense techniques in that these techniques do not
involve the Defender applying any aggressive moves on the Attacker.
1) Wrist Grab (same side) – Start with Attacker grabbing the Defender’s left wrist with his
right hand. Defender performs change body by stepping back with his right foot and
turning his body to his right, 45-degrees to Attacker.
Defender brings his left forearm up, making a “Popeye” muscle. Once Attacker’s grip is
broken, Defender runs away. (Repeat with Attacker’s left hand grabbing Defender’s right
wrist.)

Katas and Gatas
A kata is a prearranged pattern of movements of attack and defense techniques against imaginary
opponents. Gata is the term used for a children’s kata. In the past, kata was the primary means of
instruction for Karate and was used to pass on knowledge from generation to generation. The
knowledge gained from practice of Kata consists of much more than just the memorization
movements and techniques. There is also the knowledge of the practical application of the
techniques, known as Bunkai. Kata also improves one’s balance, timing, breathing and focus,
and perfects one’s precision in the very basics of Karate.
Although no one would ever use kata in an actual fight, practicing kata, along with understanding
of its application, gives one the ability to make the proper decisions of what to do in different
situations, along with the ability to do it precisely and powerfully.
It is said that it takes a student about three years of constant practice to fully learn and understand
a single kata. Therefore, we teach a student only one kata at a time, and do not teach the next
kata until that student has shown that he/she is ready to move on to the next level.
All katas should be performed with focus (Kime), good flow, and crisp execution.
Before each kata, come to attention (Kiotuske) , bow (Rei), and then take the ready stance (Yoi).
At the end of each kata, come back to the ready stance (Yame), and bow (Rei).

Ippon Kumite Ippon Kumite are drills where two partners practice offensive and defensive techniques together.
The Attacker should always try to punch in the same place, becoming more precise each time,
which then allows the Defender to become more precise with his blocks. Although the phrase
translates “One Step”, it comes from a much longer phrase which basically means “to exchange
techniques”, or “to work together”. In order for the partners to work together properly, they need
to maintain the same distance from each other while they are stepping. They should stay close
enough that their toes on their front feet are almost touching.

Pinan Kata Shodan The Pinan Kata Shodan is the first adult level kata. This kata is also the first in a series of five
Pinan, or “peaceful mind”, katas. The Pinan katas were developed by Bushi Matsumura’s
student, Anko (Yatsutsune) Itosu during the years 1903 to 1909 for the Okinawan public schools.
He developed them from two old Chinese katas.

Emperor’s Flag
The Okinawan Emperor’s flag is represented by three swirls in a dark circle.
Legend has it that when the Japanese invaded Okinawa in the 1600’s, they
captured one of the Okinawan generals. They were going to execute him by
throwing him alive into a large cauldron of boiling water. The general
insisted that he be thrown into the cauldron by three of the Japanese
generals. When they went to throw him into the cauldron, he grabbed hold
of them and pulled them in along with him. The flag was created as a symbol of the fight of the Okinawans against the Japanese, and later became the symbol of
Okinawa Te, the ancient martial art of Okinawa.
This is Master Satunuk “Tode” Sakugawa.
He was the creator of Okinawan Karate. He
lived from 1735 to 1815.
