Author: Frieda Holliman Afieldofdandelionsoutlinestheoldwoodenfencepostthatleadstoaruggedgatemakingtheentranceoftheoldfamilycemeteryfilledwiththehistoryofsomanypeople.Thiswaswherelongago,agrandfather,orhisdad,hadmadeafencefromthesweatofhisbrowandthecallousesonhishands.Heknewsomedayhisbodywouldresttheretoo.Heknewthefencewouldstandthetestoftime,andthisiswherethecemeteryfirstbe-gan. Thefamilyeachyearmakesthetriptoputflowersontheirlovedones’graves.Asthesunbe-ginstocomeup,wemakethetripacrossthehilltothetopofthemountaintoplacelittleAmericanflagsonsoldierboys’graves,justliketheyallhavedonesomanyyearsbeforeus.Weknowinourheartstherearesomanywhoservedanddiedforthecause. AsIlookoutoverthisspecialspothereto-day,it’sclosetoourhearts.Iseeblueskiesandmountainsandvalleyssogreenandfull.It’strulyabeautifulplace.Itisanhonortogivethankstobravesoldiers;somanyhavegoneon. AswecelebratethisMemorialDaytoallourlovedonesgoneonbeforeus,theywerealltrea-suredfromGod.Ithinkinmymindofyourmemo-riesofchildhood,ofyourfamilyandfriends. Iknowthisyoungmanhadamother.AsIplacethislittleflag,Ikneeldownandpray.Icanseeclearlyahomemadequilttheywrappedhiminwhenhewasababy.Maybe,laterwhenhewasayoungman,hemarried;vowsweresaid.Agrand-ma,grandfather,adadoramom,sharedtearsonthatdaytheylaidyoutorest. Thisoldwoodenfencehasfadedwithtime,andtimestandsstillfornoone.Ithinkofthecrossandthegraveandthegreatsacrificethathasbeenmade;andyourlifewasgiven,too.Andsomanyofyouarerestingsomewhereonamountainorahill,orsomewherenear,somewheretoday.Somanywillclimbtheirhillandmountaintogettothetoptoplacetheirlittleflagsthere,justlikewedid. Iseewildfernsgrowingandhearthebirdssingingtheirheavenlysongs.It’srarebeautytosee,asightforthesetiredol’eyestosee.Theredferngrows;yet,itonlybloomsforyoutoday. Thesegoldenmemoriescelebrateeach lifethatisrestingineternitythatwasapoetryoflife.Oh,LittleChild,youweretosomeoneashiningstarintheireyes,aheartofjoytobehold.Thead-venturousplacesyoumusthavetraveled;seekingthesky,summerbreezes,redbirdssinging.Lul-labiesweresungtoyouoneday,longago. Iknowwhenweplacetheselittleflags,it’snotenough.But,ithelpstoremindofyouandallyougave.Somanygavetheirlifeandsomuchofthem-selvesandtheirfamilydidtoo.Wemustneverfor-gettogivehonorandrespecttothemandshowthemwelovethem. ThelittleflagthatIplaceonthissoldier’sgraveonthisMemorialDay,Ikneeldowntopray,thetearsstillrundownmyfaceasIplaceeachflagonthisboy’sgraveonthisspecialday.Iknowhediedandservedhiscountrysobravely.Wemustneverforgettogivehonorandthanks.Someday,I’llresttheretoo,andsomeonemustcarryon. HewasbornJuly22,1948inBourbonCountyandwasthe son of the late WalterReedandLottieBellGinterMorris.HewasretiredfromtheUnitedStatesArmyandwas also retired from theFed-XCorporation.HewasamemberofIvoryHillBap-tist Church, theAmericanLegionandwasaKentuckyColonel. Walt is survived by hiswife,BonevaBogieMorris;four daughters: Carla Ar-thur(Danny),ScottCounty;AngelaWilliams,Virginia;BeverlyKadle,EstillCoun-ty;andGlendaMack(Carl),Scott County; two sons:W.L.
