Alumni News We were delighted to learn this week
that former pupil, Amy Schanschieff, who
left OBH in July 2013, has been appointed
Head Girl at Oakham for the next
academic year.
After leaving OBH she joined Oakham as
an all round scholar and has enjoyed 4
years as a boarder in Buchanans House
where she was Head of House this
year. With an excellent grounding at OBH
Amy continues to pursue her passion for
music and sport singing in the Chapel Choir, playing in the 1st
tennis team, captaining the girls' 1st XI cricket team, and
after 2 years in the 1st hockey team she will captain the side
in her final year.
Art Exhibition All art exhibited in the marquee can be collected from 2.30
p.m. on Saturday 8th July.— please not before!
Lost: crucifix and chain If any parent spots a gold crucifix and chain in the grounds
tomorrow, please can you hand in to the school office.
With many thanks.
Morning Bus Routes OBH currently operates two morning bus routes:
Clare via Cavendish and Somersham via Wattisham.
If any parent is interested in using either of these routes
for their child please contact the Bursar for further infor-
mation: [email protected].
If there is sufficient interest in starting a new route then
please contact the Bursar.

DONATE THE OLD ONES
TO CHILDREN WHO HAVE NEVER HAD A
PAIR
300 million children in the world do not have
any shoes. This makes them vulnerable to
injury, disease and parasites. It can also
mean that they are not allowed to go to
school.
We are collecting shoes in good condition to
be sent to some of these children around the
world.
Any shoes are welcome:
Flip flops, trainers, slippers, school shoes…
All we ask is for you to:
fasten them in pairs with an elastic
band
if possible, tape a £1 coin to each pair
to help them on their journey
pop them in the collection points in the
Pre Prep or in the Main School (outside
the school office)
Any queries please contact: Hilary Jacklin,
Collection will continue into the first two
weeks of next term.

Our final week in the Stable Yard 2016/2017
Phew! We’ve made it! The final week of the academic year has come
and gone and I am left reflecting on a quite brilliant year in the Mid-
dle School. It is times like these that I feel so grateful to work in
such a lovely school with fabulous children and supportive work col-
leagues. I would like to thank Mr and Mrs Gillott for their outstand-
ing work with the Year 4 children, there are too many highlights to
mention but everything has been achieved with huge enthusiasm, end-
less patience and an abundance of professionalism. Mr Pascalides and
I have had a wonderful year with the Year 3 children and I thank him
for everything he has done to help and support this talented group of
children. I would also like to thank Mrs Powell and Mrs Nunn for
working so closely with the children to produce such a brilliant Middle
School Production. I have heard so much positive feedback from
parents and children, it really was a fabulous show. Aside from this, I
would also like to thank Mrs Powell for everything she does behind
the scenes which goes largely unnoticed. She is an absolute star and I
look forward to working closely with her again next year. Most
importantly, I would like to thank all the parents for their unfailing
positivity on behalf of their children and their many kind words
throughout this year.
We look forward to welcoming Year 2 to the Middle School in
September and we wish the Year 4 children well, as they make the
important transition into the Senior School. We presented each child
in the Middle School with a book to mark the end of the school year.
I would like to congratulate all the children for their hard work and
positive contributions to all areas of school life.
The highlight of this final week was most definitely the Team Building
morning that involved Years 1, 2 3 and 4. The children were divided
into five mixed groups who rotated around different activities that
required listening skills and most importantly, the ability to work to-
gether. It was an opportunity for the Year 4 children to demonstrate
leadership skills and they certainly did not disappoint. There were
many individuals that absolutely shone out and others who quietly
made their own valuable contributions. The younger children were
amazingly enthusiastic and joined in showing absolutely no fear or
trepidation. I would like to thank all the staff who helped make this
morning such a success. This was OBH at its very best!
I wish you all a fabulous holiday with your children and we look
forward to welcoming everybody back in September.

Year 3 Air resistance Helicopters
Year 4 Beetle Drive
Since half term we have had three
successful informal concerts at which
there were about than fifty individual
performances of pianists,
instrumentalists and singers and then a
spectacular finale to the term with the
Jazz on the Lawn. It has been wonderful to see so many
clearly enjoy music making, whether it
be playing individually and over-coming
first time nerves, singing as part of a
choir or year group, or drumming in a
rock group and taking part in every
ensemble in between.
We have had great fun over the past
six months. Every child has risen to
every challenge with a smile and we have
seen some brilliant results. Our
audiences have enjoyed and encouraged
at every event.

obh mail Year 7 Survival Expedition
The Year 7’s were keen to ‘rough’ it for their final Year 7
expedition, so the plan was hatched to make this a survival
based expedition, involving the children sleeping in their ‘A’
frame and ‘lean to’ shelters overnight before starting an
orienteering exercise the next day. We marched the
children into the big woods to collect and source natural
materials from the woods. The key to this is keeping it
simple and the children built some fantastic shelters, which
are still standing! We were lucky with the weather and with
shelters built, fire lit, we settled down to a supper of fire
smoked salmon and bush burgers, luxury really as they did
not fancy the worm stew I suggested!
It was a quiet night, the fire was kept burning all night in
case there were a few cold children but judging by the
snoring, echoing around the camp, all slept reasonably well.
We woke early, getting breakfast and preparing for the
orienteering exercise which would cover nine miles of local
countryside. There were no real major navigational errors,
the staff sat back and let the children lead, and I am
pleased to say that we arrived back at school at 3pm sharp.
Tired and with a few blisters the children departed for
their home weekend, they were a great group to take away,
plenty of laughs and all seemed eager to step it up a notch
next year. In September we will start planning their final
Gold award expedition, watch this space!

Summer Reading List
Below is a short reading list aimed, roughly speaking, for Years 6-8 in September. It is made up of
fiction books, many of which have been published in the last few years. Some are cutting edge, deal-
ing with emotive topics such as war, death, homelessness, and children in care etc. Many are deliber-
ately shocking but they are all exciting, well-written and will expand any reader’s vocabulary, imagina-
tion and horizons. It is impossible to put recommended age ranges by each book because different
readers are intellectually and emotionally ready for a specific book at very different ages. Also, some
parents are more ‘protective’ than others about the books their child reads. For example, we know
that some OBH parents loved Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, others found it too shocking.
Arguably, it is a matter of opinion. What isn’t is that pupils who read a lot tend to do far better
academically than ones who don’t!
You can find out more about each one on the Internet, particularly on Amazons website where you can
read extracts and where they are all for sale at competitive prices. Our advice to pupils is that if you
find a particular author or specific genre that you enjoy then that is wonderful; read another. Do
bear in mind, though, that variety is important too.

obh mail Boarding at OBH
This week has been a busy week in boarding with
the packing of trunks and cases, the late night 20-
20 cricket matches on Tuesday and then Jazz on
the lawn on Thursday. The weather has fortunately
been kind and everyone has been able to take full
advantage of this and have in their free time been
splashing in the pool or chilling in the shade, biking
around and enjoying their last tuck shop treats.
It has been a pleasure to look after everyone over
this past year in the boarding houses. The Boarding
team are looking forward to welcoming everyone
back in September.
Have a lovely summer holiday.
Mr and Mrs Miller
On Monday night Katie Nocton
celebrated her 13th Birthday with a
birthday table in the drawing room
full of her girly friends. It was a
lovely evening, all finished off with a
yummy chocolate cake.
On Wednesday, Sienna Wheeler
turned 12. She celebrated on Tuesday
night with a birthday tea with the
other Year 7 girls as their Wednes-
day match at Langley was such a late
return. Her birthday cake arrived by
special delivery just in the nick of
time and as a special treat she got to
enjoy her chocolate cake upstairs in
the boarding house!
A great time was had by all.

A Perfect Balance What a lovely year we have had in the Pre-Prep. Thank you to eve-
ryone who came along to Prize Day and Sports Day yesterday – the
perfect way to finish off the year. The children have worked so
hard this year. They have really impressed me with their progress
and what different children they have become.
What is really noticeable at OBH is the perfect balance between
the academic subjects (English, maths, science, history, geogra-
phy); the wider curriculum (PE, ICT, art, music) and what I like to
call the ‘added extras’ – such as time in our outdoor classrooms and
being able to pop into our pool on hot days.
It is these added extras that have helped me make the decision to
move my family to Suffolk over the summer, so my daughters can
attend OBH. I can now see things through the eyes of a parent and
I completely understand why you have chosen to send your children
to OBH.
I am so pleased that we are able to offer Outdoor Classroom
sessions every week from September. Come rain or shine, the
children will be welly-booted up and bug hunting, den building or
doing some natural art. The fabulous Mrs. Hambling is taking on
this area of the curriculum and we are all very excited.
Mrs Hambling and I are also working on a Pre-School Programme
together. We are hoping to have Toddler Dance, Baby Yoga and
even a choir for mummies. So if you have a little one, or enjoy
singing, please do keep an eye out for those announcements.
Adios We are sadly saying ‘Goodbye’ to two teachers this year. Miss
Piggott is heading off to teach a Year 1 class at Tolgate – so not
too far away. We have had a lovely year with Miss Piggott in the
Pre-Prep – she made us all feel 10 years younger for starters! She
has created a wonderful bond with her class and I know they will
miss her a lot, as will we. Best of luck – do stay in touch.
Our next goodbye is not so final, as I am sure she will return in
nine months or so. Mrs Keeling is honestly one of the most
inspirational Nursery teachers I have worked with. She is leaving
us to have not one, but two babies! Best of luck for next few
months.

obh mail Remembering the Pre-Prep year
Now to think back to the wonderful events we have had this year.
The first term (and only a few weeks into my time here) saw The Macmillan coffee afternoon- I was
so proud of my Year 2 children who thought up, managed and ran all the games and stalls themselves
and with everything costing 10p, they were able to manage the money as well.
At the end of term we had our Nativity – A Miracle in Town. The teachers always do such an amazing
job with the Nativity. Having only just settled into the new school year – and school itself for the
Nursery and Reception children – they are suddenly thrust into the cut-throat world of theatre and
after only a few short weeks they are up on stage performing in front of the whole school, followed
by a performance in front of the parents. It really is one of my highlights every year.
We also finished off the year with yet another whole school performance of Rumble in the Jungle –
Miss Allison, yet again, pulled together a fabulous performance (I have told her that next year she
can sit with her feet up and I will do all the hard work, but knowing her, I very much doubt she will!)
I am delighted to announce that from September, Mrs Allison will be officially known as The Deputy
Head of Pre-Prep – a title she has well and truly earned.
We have introduced House days into the Pre-Prep – where the children split into their Houses and
rotate around different activities. One of the lovely things about House days is the fact that the
older children take the younger ones under their wing and escort them around all day, like mother
hens. It is so lovely to see.
We have introduced Parent’s Activity Mornings, the first Friday back after half term – which has
been a great opportunity to welcome you all into the classrooms and experience life in the Pre-Prep.
We have had trips to Hevingham Castle, The Panto in Ipswich, Lackford Lakes (gosh it was cold –
even one of the children commented to their mum on how cold I had been!) and a lovely warm visit to
Colchester Zoo earlier this term.
We have had a Christmas jumper day, World Book Day, the Toddle Waddle, Strawberry Tea, a
Sports Festival, Teddy Bear’s Picnic – I honestly do not know how we have fitted this all in.... but
with only one day to go, we have!
I want to finish by saying what a wonderful first year I have had at OBH – getting to know the won-
derful children and you all. I have never taught at such a friendly, open school where the parents are
so involved in their children’s education – it is wonderful. I look forward to being around a lot more
next year.

Boys’ Cricket
1st XI v Langley The 1st XI finished off the season with a determined display
against a talented Langley side. Even though we lost by seven
wickets, there were still plenty of positives to end the season.
Archie Rook worked hard for his 33 at the top of the
order, while Thomas Crawshay’s unbeaten 30 helped us to a
reasonable 126 for 5 from 25 overs against highly accurate
bowling. We needed to take early wickets, and Ed Collins did
just that with some quick, straight deliveries, but their Num-
ber 3 batsman took the game away from us with a chanceless
72 not out – one of the best innings I have seen this summer.
We did take one more wicket later on when George Whitelaw
took a fine catch off Harry Bidwell’s bowling and we kept going
in the field, but it was not to be our day. This brought to an
end our string of seven successive wins – a fine achievement
from a talented team. Well done, to the whole squad for their
efforts this
season.
2nd XI v Langley Prep
It was a hot and sunny afternoon at Langley and having won the
toss we put them into bat. We started well with our four Year
8 boys putting on over 100 runs for the loss of two wickets,
Ash Rigby scoring his first ever 50 on his last attempt! Some
big blows from the middle order gave us a good total of 162;
plenty to bowl at! Two early wickets gave us the start we
needed, and from there on in Langley never looked like getting
the runs. Line and length and consistency from our bowlers
meant that the Langley boys could get the ball away and they
limped to 100 off their 20 overs. This was a good team perfor-
mance by the boys’ in some hot and sticky conditions. Well
done.
On Tuesday morning two OBH boys,
Edward Collins and Freddie De La Rue,
travelled to the National Athletics
Finals to compete for the last time
this season.
Edward Collins was in fine form, hav-
ing jumped 1.57 at Sports day and
Freddie was eager to impress, having
won the Long Jump on sports day. The
conditions were far from ideal but
Edward started well, clearing 1.45
before his first failed attempt. As
the bar got higher, the field of 12
boys, started to dwindle; leaving only
four boys jumping for the honour of
high jump champion. It was a very
tight finish with Edward clearing 1.57
and then managed to jump 1.58, which
equalled his personal best. The other
two remaining jumpers failed at 1.60,
which meant that all three had
cleared 1.58. The result went down to
a count back which placed Edward 3rd
behind two other talented jumpers.
This was a fantastic achievement and
he should he hugely proud of his
achievements this term. Freddie was
up next, and with a large field of 26
athletes, the standard was incredibly
high.
Freddie jumped well, securing three
legal jumps, the best being 3.91,
which placed him just outside the
final eight boys. This was a brilliant
experience for both these boys and
one to remember for a long time.
Having two of our children compete at
the National finals, just shows how
much our athletics programme has
developed over the years, and we look
forward to many more competing at
this level.

3rd XI v Brookes Cambridge
We entertained Brookes Cambridge for the last match of the
season. To make sure everybody got to bat and bowl in what was
for the Year 8 boys, their final match for OBH.
We were put into bat and although we scored steadily, wickets
fell as well. A late acceleration saw us get to 69 after our 18
overs.
Our bowling was very accurate, and our fielding was very good,
so the opposition could not really keep up with the desired run
rate. Some important wickets meant they fell short, meaning
the final match of the season ended as a victory. Well played,
boys.
Colts C Cricket V Orwell Park What an ending to a great season for the Colts C. After OBH
set a target of 295, the opposition had to bat well to reach the
total. The bowling was good throughout the game however, this
did not stop Orwell Park from finding the runs. It came down to
the last over. The opposition were ahead however, some great
fielding led to a very close run out. OBH had two balls left to
defend their total and fortunately they were able to do so.
Well done, boys on a fantastic season.
U9B Boys’ U9B v Brookes Cambridge Lost 108 – 64
The boys proudly represented OBH in the final match of the
season. There was a definite improvement in our bowling which
made it difficult for the opposition. After some wide balls we
settled into our groove. The boys backed each up when fielding
and fiercely guarded the boundary. There was some good bat-
ting with lots of single runs and a few fours, well done!
U13A v Langley Prep
The U13A's travelled to Langley on
Wednesday for their final match for
OBH. What an absolutely amazing
performance! We had a shaky start to
our batting innings but in came Claudia
Harrison and Lottie Rowland who played
themselves in incredibly well. Claudia
went on to score 62 not out! So game
on!!! OBH fielded amazingly well with
just eight players in comparison to
Langley’s 11! Unfortunately
Langley sneaked over our 142 runs with
just nine balls to go! These girls have
worked incredibly hard and have had a
fantastic and rewarding year on the
sports field. I wish them all the best
with the next chapter of their lives and
hope they continue to enjoy sport and
what sport brings.
Josh Bolt will be running tennis and
sports camps at the beginning of the
holidays at the school. These usually
prove very popular and include lots of
tennis, football and indoor sports.

U13B v Langley Prep The drive was long but the welcome was very warm indeed at Langley
Prep in Norwich. OBH won the toss and elected to field. After such
a long drive the girls were a bit sluggish in the field and missed a
few sitters but quickly got on top of their game to minimise runs in
the outfield. Sienna Wheeler and Elle Jeffery took 2 wickets in the
opening few overs. Although our wide count was higher than in
recent matches, our wicket taking was extremely effective and
Maisy Webster’s catching and stumping was excellent. Langley fin-
ished their innings with 246 runs with OBH having taken 12 wickets
during the 21 overs. After a gorgeous tea break, in the shade, OBH
set out to match their run rate and very quickly we were alongside
Langley’s runs. Once it was clear we had overtaken Langley by some
distance, OBH then just wanted to bat well and to develop their
skills and ended the innings with a run total of 349 with only a 2
wicket loss. Well done girls, it has been a truly great season with
some marvellous performances and it is clear that everyone has
developed and improved their game considerably.
U11B v Brookes Cambridge Won (Brookes Cambridge 223, OBH 252)
On a lovely sunny afternoon the U11B girls ended their season in
style with a win over Brookes Cambridge in what was a very pleasant
and enjoyable game. OBH bowled first and impressed with their ac-
curacy restricting the opposition girls to 223. All the girls bowled
well, but Shiyao Lui and Alice Romer-Lee proved most effective with
some pace and consistent line and length. The fielding was also keen
and determined too helping to keep the score down.
In reply, Jemima Banks and Annabel Ball got the innings off to a
great start with several boundaries and also some delightful cover
drives on the off side too. Nolly Mannion Miles and Alice then pro-
vided further impetus in the middle order helping to accelerate the
score and then Shiyao and Mimi Raja entertained the crowd with
some big hitting at the end.
The improvement in the standard of the girls’ cricket is very notice-
able and a real testament to the enthusiastic coaching from Mrs.
Thurlow who has guided them through the season. It is also great to
see such enthusiasm for the game from the girls too and I wish them
every success in the future.
U9A v Moreton Hall
The U9 girls welcomed Moreton
Hall last week to a very sunny
OBH. The girls had yet another
amazing game and took the win in
style! The girls have worked so
hard this term and the improve-
ment and success has been well
deserved.
U8 v Brookes Cambridge
On Wednesday the U8s travelled
away to play against a mixed U10
team at Brookes Cambridge in what
was the last Cricket fixture of the
season. They started off batting
and did so in style with the opening
pair scoring 39 runs; with Ismene
Johnson hitting a great 4 and
Hettie Brown following this with
two 4s and a fantastic 6. The team
continued in this strong fashion
and finished their batting
innings on 278. They went onto
field well, despite struggling a
little with the bowling. The end
result was a win by 12 runs and a
fantastic way to finish the season.
Well played girls.

obh mail And finally……
As another school year comes to an end, I would like to thank everyone involved in the wider OBH
community for their efforts and support of the school over the last ten months. An enormous
amount has been achieved (more of this in my speech tomorrow – no spoilers!). We have happy and
enthused children who are performing at a consistently high level, both inside and outside of the
classroom.
The school has evolved considerably over recent years, and whilst there are always things to improve,
it now offers an outstanding education to all of its pupils. What is needed now is a period of
stability, to have confidence that what we do, we do well, and offer a consistent approach in the
future. The timetable, the structure of the day, the curriculum itself and the staff delivering it
need to be consistent over the coming years, so that every child and parent knows what to expect at
each stage.
I will say more tomorrow about the staff who are leaving us this summer, but I would like to express
my sincerest thanks to them all for their work here.
Andrew and Maxine Baker have not been with us long but they have both made a profound impact on
the life of the school. Andrew has worked tirelessly to both support me and keep the day-to-day
running of the school ticking over efficiently. He is an outstanding schoolmaster who will offer much
to Highfield as a Housemaster and Head of Science.
Colin Campbell has retired many times, but his enthusiasm and dedication keep bringing him back into
the classroom—thankfully for us. The French department at OBH has been turned around during his
time with us. We very much look forward to keeping in touch with him in his role as an international
tutor and guardian.
Alison de Silva (and family) will also be greatly missed, but we wish them all well on their exciting
move to Sri Lanka.
Helen Hibbert has done more than most over the last three years to keep our girls happy and loving
their boarding lives. Along with Jen Miller they have done a sterling job – if you do not know how
much the girls love boarding – ask them! Helen may be moving to London but we know the girls will
find her somehow. Jen, of course, is staying with us and the Girls’ Boarding House loss, is the maths
department’s gain! I would like to thank Jen for all of her hard work, care and love that she has put
into the House over the last two years. I know that she will continue to be a strong influence over
our older girls.
I would also like to wish Lauren Piggott the very best of luck in her new post and thank her for all
she has done in Pre-Prep this year.
Finally, we all wish Laura Keeling well as she takes some time off before her twins arrive in the
autumn.
I very much look forward to welcoming you all to Speech Day tomorrow but if I do not get a chance
to speak to you personally please have a wonderful summer.
Very best wishes,
Tom O’Sullivan
