Nursing Student Association Newsletter
Did you know that being awake for
16 hours straight decreases your
performance as much as if your
blood alcohol level were 0.05%?
The legal limit is 0.08%! This month,
Fall 2015 Cohort chose to focus on
sleep awareness as the health
topic. We believe this is an
important topic for everyone,
especially us nursing students. This is
a perfect time to teach our peers
about sleep because a lot of
people trade in their sleep for study
time during finals. On March 16,
2016 from 11 AM to 1 PM there will
be a sleep flash mob in front of the
fountain. This will be more effective
the more people we have so grab
your sleeping bag and come take
Sleep Awareness Month a nap with us! If speaking in front of
crowds makes you nervous, this is the
demonstration for you because we will
be wearing signs instead of speaking.
Come learn more about how
important your sleep is and support the
NSA in promoting healthy habits at
Bellevue College.
“Take pride in how
far you have come.
Have faith in how far
you can go. But
don’t forget to enjoy
the journey.”
-Michael Josephson
Which above student are you??
Humans are the only mammals
who willingly delay sleep.

Helpful tip:
“I love people; I love to hear their stories. There is so much
negativity in this world and being able to be a bright spot in
someone’s day makes my day better. As nurses I think it’s
important that we can give their happiness longevity through
their health. I want to do anything I can do to make that
happen.”
In the classroom, Jacquelyn spent her time providing a fun and interactive learning experience for students. It was her goal to see the light bulbs turn on. Being a teacher at Bellevue allowed her the opportunity to see how students progressed from novice to the expert student nurse. She believes that teaching helped her to improve as a person, teacher, and nurse. Her patients will be grateful to have her back full time. She claims that she cannot wait to keep harassing people. She states "I love the instant gratification of making someone feel better. I love sharing these intimate moments with people and being there for them when others cannot." She exemplifies the quality of nurse that we all are working towards. When Jacquelyn is not working at the hospital or the classroom, you might have trouble finding her. This is because she is busy travelling (both backpacking and resorting as she calls it), planning her Puppy Parties, snowboarding, and even scuba diving. It is hard to believe that she has so many incredible hobbies because she always made herself available for her students. The advice that she wants us to remember is to stay true to ourselves, be open minded, and flexible. As difficult as it is, "remember, whatever you do, sometimes you cannot save the patient. Also, sometimes whatever you do they won't die either." We will miss her humor and guidance in the classroom greatly but are so very thankful for the opportunity to have known her. We look forward to seeing you at clinical Jacquelyn!!
As some of you may know, Jacquelyn Jinhong is returning to full time bedside nursing after the end of this quarter. Jacquelyn has been the faculty adviser for our chapter of the NSA and without her we would not be where we are today. Recent graduates contacted her wanting to resurrect Bellevue's NSA and she replied saying "I wanted to participate in this because when I was in nursing school I was missing that community, that internal support, and wanted more ways to connect with my nursing cohort on various levels". We hope to continue striving for the environment that she intended this club to bring.

Condom Awareness Month Update The NSA has decided to tackle monthly health awareness
topics. Each month, one cohort will organize an event
promoting their chosen health topic. Every student is
encouraged to help the cohort accomplish their goal.
February was National Condom Month and the Fall 2014
cohort and NSA spread safe sex awareness in several ways!
Planned Parenthood donated condoms and flyers and Lovers
contributed various styles of lube and coupons. We used these
to make Valentine’s Day cards and passed them out to our
peers in the C building the week before Valentine’s Day. The
fun interactions and conversations started made all the effort
worth it! NSA also partnered with BC LGBTQ to host sexual
education seminars every other Friday. Stephanie made a
trivia quiz and handed out the remaining contributions from
Lovers and Planned Parenthood as prizes. These monthly
health topics are a way for the NSA to be active on campus
and to encourage healthy habits for everyone. Keep an eye
out for Fall 2015 Cohort’s Sleep Awareness Month information
for March!!
Faculty Spotlight: Jean Irons-Dendy, RN
Lisa Tedeschi. Jean likes the
community college aspect
and the support it gives to
nursing students. Advice she
would give to nursing students
is to take RN jobs as they
come. “You can make all the
plans in the world and still have
no idea where you will end up.
I wanted to work as an
oncology nurse, but have yet
to do so because when doors
opened for me I took the
opportunities.” She enjoys her
clinical experiences as an
instructor at the VA because it
has opened her eyes to the
great nursing that goes on
away from the critical care
setting. Welcome to Bellevue
College Jean!
.
Student Spotlight: Jenika Stevens
Jean Irons-Dendy has been a
nurse for 34 years. Before she
came to Bellevue College she
wore many hats. Her roles
ranged from a nurse’s aide in
Montana, a med/surg RN in
Florida, 10 years in the ICU, and
she eventually moved to
Seattle spending time as a
cardiac, ICU, and ER nurse at
Overlake. During this time she
enjoyed working on the rapid
response team at Overlake.
After obtaining her master’s
degree, she worked as a
clinical nurse specialist in the
ICU. Her decision to come to
Bellevue came from a desire to
spread her wings and teach.
She had previously worked
with another faculty member
Jenika Stevens is in her second quarter of
the nursing program. She previously
graduated with her Bachelor’s in molecular,
cellular and developmental biology in 2013
and had plans to get a master’s in biology.
She decided on nursing school after she
worked at an optometrist’s office. This job
made her realize how much she enjoyed
working with people. She decided to go to
Bellevue College because it has a great
reputation and was closer to home and
more affordable than other colleges. In 10
years she hopes to have her master degree
in nursing and possibly work as a nurse
practitioner. Her favorite parts of nursing
school thus far are the friendships she’s
made. “You get to know the people in
your program and you eventually end up
spending more time with them than your
family. I could not have asked for a better
group of people to be with on this crazy
endeavor called nursing school.”

“Do whatever you have to do to keep
yourself balanced. If that means you
have to fit your workouts in before class,
or squeeze in time to spend with your
family, or even just take the occasional nap – do it!”
