F. Reglas de administración del curso

NURS 201 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING 10
January 2018

I. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION
A. Course Description
This theoretical and clinical course introduces the historical, sociopolitical, and legal
concepts of the nursing profession in Florida and the United States. It emphasizes on the
development of basic nursing skills, which are needed for promotion of health and
maintenance of individuals, families and communities. The student is guided to consider
the individual’s motivation in seeking health care and how these circumstances interfere
with the person’s daily activities. Clinical practice provides opportunities for development
of the skills needed in hospital and community settings to carry out the nursing role. The
client is viewed as a holistic being and the use of critical thinking when intervening in
health and illness with a variety of individuals from different cultural/social backgrounds
and age groups.
The adaptation of this module for the incorporation of the simulation activities of the
nursing lab was financed by an award granted by the United States Department of
Education through the Title V program (P031S40138) and (P031S150175).

NURS 201 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING 24
F. Course Management Rules
The student will comply with the following specific requirements:
1. The student must be prepared in such a way that it complies with the activities and
readings, as assigned in each workshop. A minimum of 10 hours of preparation is
required for each workshop. The identification and early attention to the challenge areas
and the study time required by each course are essential for success in the nursing
career.
2. The student must complete all activities before the workshop applying the content,
terminology, and appropriate processes related to the topics of the workshop. These
activities will be evaluated using a rubric that measures the student’s content mastery
and linguistic proficiency. The student will review with the facilitator, during Workshop
One, the rubrics to evaluate: the participation in the workshop, written works, and oral
and audiovisual presentations. Said rubrics are found in the Course Guide section on the
left side of their course (Course Menu) in the Blackboard platform. These rubrics will
be used for the evaluation of the 70% of the content in the activities carried out
throughout the course and to evaluate 30% of the grade in the language areas, as
stipulated in our bilingual model.
3. The rubrics to evaluate the lab and clinical component of the course refer to the Clinical
Documents located under E-module and named NURS 201OL in the Course Guide
section to the left side of the course (Course Menu) in Blackboard.
4. The student must access the lab and Simulation component Located in your lab course
in blackboard under the Course Guide section to the left side of the course (Course
Menu) in Blackboard.
NURS 201 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING 25
5. The student must actively participate in the simulation activities designed for the course
in order to develop the skills needed to perform the functions and processes in the
nursing profession.
6. Place all the evaluated activities of the course, with their respective rubrics, in the
corresponding folder of the workshops of the Digital Performance Portfolio. This
includes, but not limited to, the original drafts of written works, evidence of the
feedback provided by the NetTutor tool, and the revised versions of said written work.
Remember that the Digital Performance Portfolio is part of the evaluation criteria for
the course.
7. Students must take a screenshot of the results obtained in each of the EAQ Mastery
Quizzing tests - (Silvestri, 2014) review questions, and the case study analyses
completed through the course. Each image must be properly saved in a digital document
specified for the class.
8. Complete and submit all course work on the assigned due date. Assignments submitted
after 24 hours of the due date will receive a zero grade. One make-up exam/quiz will be
permitted and must be scheduled within 24 hours.
9. To pass the course, the student must satisfactorily pass both components of the course;
theory and clinic. If the theoretical component is less than 80%, the student must repeat
the course. If the clinical component is not approved (obtain a pass note in the clinical
practice component), the student will obtain a grade of F in the course and must repeat
the same. A failing grade of less than 80% requires that the entire course be repeated
(workshops, laboratory and clinic).
10. Acquire, within the designated time frame, all clinical competencies for the
course. Students are evaluated according to the Clinical Evaluation Tool which lists
NURS 201 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING 26
all competencies for the course. The student must receive the “P” grade on all items in
order to pass the course. An “F” designation on any item means a course failure
regardless of the ratings on the other items. All pre-requisite nursing courses must be
completed prior to registering for the next nursing course in the sequence.
11. Comprehend that the HESI specialty testing is counted as an exam in each course which
is worth 30% of the final course grade. The HESI integrative exam conversion score
will be used in the calculation of the final exam average. Each student will be required
to take the exam and achieve a score of 850 points. If the student achieves below 850
points, a second attempt is required, by the end of the drop/add period of the following
assigned term, with specific remediation parameters being set for the student.
12. The grade of the specialty exam of HESI will be determined according to the following
scale:

13. Understand that the clinical and laboratory experiences provide the student with
opportunities to apply and integrate theoretical knowledge to the practice of nursing. To
be both safe and effective, the student must come to the experience with some basic
preparation and the student must seek out learning and practice opportunities as they
NURS 201 FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING 28
present themselves. Specific preparation may vary depending on learning outcomes and
clinical site.
14. Understand that student performance in nursing clinical labs is evaluated according to
the achievement of competencies rather than time spent in clinical or lab. Students must
demonstrate proficiency in all competencies identified as essential for the course by the
end of the term. Repeated practice of a competency assists the student in establishing
confidence in their nursing practice.
15. Refer to the Student’s Course Guide, which can be found under the Course Guide
section to the left side of the Course Menu in Blackboard for additional details
regarding course policies and rules. The facilitator will discuss the Student’s Course
Guide during Workshop One.

Sherpath
Sherpath is a learning module system that acts as a fully functional course content platform. Sherpath
creates and organizes content in a way that is engaging and interactive, that allows you to access the
following resources: lessons, quizzes, teaching materials, e-books, case studies, and PowerPoints for
each of your courses. Sherpath is located within your Evolve account at the Elsevier website.
Why are we providing the Sherpath:
Using Sherpath will save you time by linking your course materials directly to your tasks. This tool
helps you understand and analyze the critical components needed to successfully complete each
course. As a whole, Sherpath bolsters your overall academic performance by individualizing your
academic needs based on your unique outcomes and performance.
How to use Sherpath:
Each week you will need to log in to your Evolve account on the Elsevier website. Sherpath
automatically aligns all the activities such as lessons, EAQ -Adaptive Quizzing, Case studies and
PowerPoint presentations for that week. Also, it is equally important to mention that each student has
the ability to further test their understanding by creating a custom exam on the specific chapters
reviewed. As you complete the custom quizzes and the quizzes provided by your faculty, it is very
important to reach at least the intermediate level in order to assure that you have attained the
appropriate knowledge needed from that week. The same process is repeated throughout the term until
the course is completed. All assignments, quizzes and case studies will contribute towards the final
grade of the course. For more information access the Sherpath manual, which can be found under the
Course Guide section to the left side of the Course Menu in Blackboard.
