Description of NHERI

•  Isadistributed,multi-user,nationalfacility–partofNSF’slargefacilityportfolio.

• Providesthenaturalhazardscommunitywithaccesstoresearchinfrastructure(earthquake,tsunamiandstormsurge,andwindengineeringexperimentalandpost-disaster,rapidresponseresearch(RAPID)facilities,cyberinfrastructure,computationalmodelingandsimulationtools,andresearchdata),coupledwitheducationandcommunityoutreachactivities.

•  Enablesresearchandeducationaladvancesthatcancontributeknowledgeandinnovationforthenation'scivilinfrastructureandcommunitiestopreventnaturalhazardeventsfrombecomingsocietaldisasters.

NHERI RAPID Facility – Role (NSF 15-598)

•  Providescommunityresources(equipment,instrumentation,anddatamanagementinfrastructure)forquickfielddeploymentgloballytosupportperishableresearchdatacollectionfollowinganearthquakeorwindstormevent.

•  TheprimaryusersoftheRAPIDFacilityresourceswillberesearcherssupportedthroughseparateNSFawards(RAPIDs)forpost-disasterinvestigations,withassistanceinthefieldfromRAPIDFacilitystaff,asrequired.

•  Whiletheprimaryfocusofthisfacilitymustbeforperishabledatacollectionfollowingearthquakeandwindstormevents,thisdoesnotprecludefacilityresourcesbeingdeployedforperishabledatacollectionfollowingothernaturalhazardeventsorfortestingatotherfacilities.

•  AllcollecteddatamustbecuratedandarchivedinNHERIDesignSafeReconnaissanceIntegrationPortal.
