FROM THE NPDL VIC CLUSTER TEAM
Welcome back for 2015 and the new look
“Learning Better and Different”. This year
is shaping up to be as big as 2014! The
focus of the work this year will see our
focus shift from to capacity building to
implementing deep learning through the
Collaborative Inquiry Cycle, measured
through the suite of tools. We anticipate
that the global connections will emerge as
we link with the other clusters and explore
global projects.
As you explore this edition, don't forget to
note the upcoming capacity building
events, dates for the diary and the
professional reading section. Also have a
look at some of the great school stories
We are looking forward to continuing the
work with you in your schools as we
collaborate to make Deep Learning
happen through the catalyst of digital
technologies.

Makers in the Making Following the success of the “Invent to
Learn” workshops, NPDL schools are
beginning to introduce “making” to their
programs offered to students. Read about
how four different organizations have
approached this way of learning on page 2.

WHAT IS THE COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY CYCLE?
The Collaborative Inquiry Cycle provides a consistent methodology in which to engage with the NPDL tools to improve student learning. It is flexible enough to be incorporated with other learning and teaching cycles, however is also robust enough to stand-alone. HOW DOES THE COLLABORATIVE INQUIRY
CYCLE WORK?
At every level of the system, the collaborative inquiry cycle is used to mobilize deep learning by:
• Assessing capacity and system conditions needed for deep learning
• Designing the right approaches to building capacity and creating those conditions
• Implementing and leading change • Measuring progress, reflecting on
what is working, and changing the approach as necessary

Making Makers: Kids, Tools, and the Future of Innovation Written for both parents and educators, this is the perfect book for those beginning to explore ‘making’ in their classrooms and beyond. Covering a brief history of making, it also highlights further areas to explore and provides a compelling rationale for this form of learning. This would be a valuable library addition. Preparing for a Renaissance in Assessment Michael Barber and Peter Hill explore how technology is transforming assessment. In this they set out a “Framework for Action’ for educators, system and school leaders to prepare for this renaissance in assessment. This is a must read for those interested in the future of assessment of learning and the key trends and themes that are emerging in response to 21st century pressures.
