From the CEO....As we embark on the month of giving thanks, I wanted to hightlight the variety
of arts that fueled the community as well as look forward to what’s ahead.
It was sad to see the artist in residence, Laura Ross-Paul leave back to her
Portland home after her 3 week residence at Blue Line Arts supported through
the Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residency Teaching program presented
through the Placer Community Foundation. Her workshops and the live models
gave the students an exceptional art experience they will never forget.
As well, our visiting musician, David Burgess from North Carolina presented a
Brazilian acoustic guitar performance filled with story, beauty and intimacy.
Please look forward to our new series beginning in the spring of 2014.
Our new exhibits include “Knock on Wood” a showcase of wood work from a
collection of artists and the 30 x 30 show, will surely treat us with great diverse
work-don’t miss this opportunity to see a collection of artists this month. As well,
through November 14, we’ll honor the Fiddyment Family, a multi-generational
exhibit featuring the family history of one of Roseville’s most beloved supporters
of the arts and the community.
Don’t forget to visit our Holiday Art Sale on November 16-17. 30 artists will
have original works of jewelry, art and gift items available for holiday purchases.
There’s something for everyone, and there are so many choices for personal gifts
for loved ones and friends!
As we round out the end of the year, our annual fund drive is just beginning.
Blue Line Arts receives support through a variety of sources, and each year, we
ask and thank you for helping the organization continue with full programming
of exhibits, music and youth activities for your community. Please look forward
to our mailings, and consider contributing and helping your community again
this year!
Finally, I’d like to welcome and recognize two new board of directors, David
Breninger and Eric McIntosh. David currently serves as the Placer County Water
Agency’s CEO and has had a long love for the arts. As well, Eric McIntosh, a
leading sales representative from Zoom Imaging is a young professional leader
among the Roseville Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors and has a
passion for youth programming.
Thank you,
Julie Hirota

Nice show!” says, Matt Dennis Rhoades.
Remember kids: when writing a letter of introduction to a gallery for
representation or just a show,
make your letter short and to the point. List the most outstanding
experiences you have had in art, but keep it short. The
images you send with the letter are what they are most
interested.

“GONG YUEBIN REVIEW ”When I was asked to review Gong Yuebin’s artwork at Blue Line Arts, I was very apprehensive.
Being an artist myself it’s always difficult to review other artists work even though we’re told to do this when we are at art school.
You see, to me it’s hard to imagine that there is such a thing as ‘constructive criticism, in some form or another this criticism inevitably becomes destructive criticism, people say it’s good for us and the art!!!…… Still we are taught to criticize each other’s work to help us create new ideas and dialogue.
The reader will have to decide the merits of my review since I’m not an art critic but I will have a go.
To start the review, here is a little teaser:
CONCEPTUAL ART. Art in which the idea presented by the artist is considered more important than the finished product, if any exists.
Sometimes simply called “Conceptualism”, it’s art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedent over traditional aesthetic and material concerns.
Whether one likes or understands conceptual art, it is agreed that today it is very popular and we know that it’s been around for a long time, we also know that the argument as to the validity of this movement has been raging since the mid-sixties or even earlier.... A notion that Joseph Kosuth elevated to a definition of art itself in his seminal early manifesto of conceptual art, “Art after Philosophy” (1969).
Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 15
and even if I didn’t fully understand the true meaning of what the artist was trying to say,( the mystery of it) I was definitely emotionally moved.
That in itself makes the work totally valid. We can discuss “Art after Philosophy” at some other point in time, but you can get
a tantalizing idea that art is the highest form of thought!
This is an amazing piece because it gives the viewer a fantastic demonstration, not just of Gongs cultural heritage but of the incredible transformation his native country is going through, and I believe we have a lot
to learn from him and his work.
As for Conceptual Art, well we have plenty of time to discuss this new religion!
With the marriage of the old and new Gong gives us a vision of old glories and new beginnings from an pragmatic yet visionary view. -Zoran Peshich.
Gong’s work seems to transcend both the material and concept very well, even with all the cultural and metaphysical nuances that are contained within this work, he has managed to corral an enormous amount of energy, with a powerful set of metaphorical messages.
It is an amazing set of messages that hit me squarely on the head, and one cannot help but be transported back in time of the first Chinese Emperor while at the same time being firmly attached to the present, and no matter really how the artist had arrived at the finished piece, or whatever the process used, any confusion is dissolved by the sheer raw energy of his work.
I cannot help but be moved physically by this piece,

Visual artists serve a unique role in our region’s civic and cultural life. As producers of art, they contribute to a vibrant community; as entrepreneurs they are a critical part
of a thriving economy; and as educators, they enrich learning for young people. Support for visual artists in the advancement of their careers is vital to the cultural
health of our community – whether it be in the form of funding new work, studio or exhibition space, or critical tools to help the careers of working artists. The Leff-Davis
Fund for Visual Artists was created with a simple goal in mind: to support serious aspiring professional artists in the advancement of their careers through a monetary
award. For the purposes of this program, “serious aspiring professional artists” are defined as adults who have received training in an artistic discipline or tradition, devote 20
or more hours a week to their artwork, identify as professional artists, and try to earn income from their artistic work. Successful applicants will have demonstrated a history of artistic accomplishment, a sustained commitment to deepening and expanding their artistic work, have studied fine art and can provide examples of
their artistic activity, and have practiced at this level for at least 5 years.Awards of $5,000 or more will be made to artists of exceptional talent and
demonstrated ability based on panel recommendations.Visit www.sacregcf.org for more information
