Get more Sleep
Written by: Trustee Maureen Noe
P A G E 3 2 0 1 8 - 3 N E W S L E T T E R
Sleep.
1: The natural periodic suspension of consciousness during which the powers of the body are restored.
2: That thing everyone tells you should get more of but no one seems to know how you can get any.
The National Health Service tells us we need 8 hours of sleep a day. If we don’t get adequate sleep we could suffer from obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and even diabetes. Lack of sleep can kill your sex drive. It ages your skin and it can make you forgetful. Are you experiencing one of the follow-ing?
• Mild Depression
• Loss of Energy
• Irritability
• Sleep Pattern Changes
• Eating Pattern Changes
• Inability to Concentrate
If you said yes to some or all of these you may be one of the many who can never seem to get enough sleep According to Susan Lewis Simons, M.S., B.C.E.T.S, D.A.A.E.T.S, Presi-dent and Founder of Under the Shield Inc., our profession is a “Lifestyle” one which is impacted by stress and perpetual change. Both can be positive or negative which is influenced by our percep-tion of them. One of the side effects of our “Lifestyle” can be lack of sleep. Simons recommends several ways to improve REM sleep which can increase the amount of total sleep and restfulness we feel.
Recommendations of things To Do:
• Take a Magnesium Supple-ment- (400 to 1000mg a day)
Most easily absorbed is Magnesium Citrate or Aspertate
• Daily Super B vitamin Complex
• Take Alteril (Melatonin, L-Tryptophan, Valerian) instead of TylenolPM
• 5 tsp of Honey mixed with 1 tsp of Himalayan Pink Salt
• 2 TBLS of honey at bedtime
• Eat Turkey or drink milk be-fore bed
• Limit Alcohol to 0 to 1 ounce day
• Soak in a hot bath of Epsom Salts (Magnesium Sulfate) to absorb Magnesium
• Get 4 – 6 hours between when you exercise and sleep other-wise run sprints and/or bag work then take a hot shower and drink lots of water to flush adrenaline from your body
• Increase bright light before bed, then total darkness (sleep mask)
• Practice relaxation and breathing techniques (breath from the diaphragm)
• Laugh Often (even if it’s sick humor) which releases endor-phins that are therapeutic and healing.
10 minute rule - If you’re not asleep in 10 minutes, get up from bed and do things relaxing until you feel sleepy, NEVER JUST LAY THERE. Your mind will begin to focus on negative things which are magni-fied in the dark
Recommendations of what not to do:
Don’t procrastinate
Do not watch TV or read in bed
Do not check Facebook or Social Media sites in bed
Avoid Magnesium Carbonate, Sulfate, Gluconate and Oxide
as they are poorly absorbed and are the cheapest most common forms.
Don’t take Ambien!!!
Have you ever read the fine print on a prescription of Ambien?
“..Possible side effects can be any of the following to include: Anxiety, depression, nervousness, unusual moods or behavior, thoughts of suicide, memory loss, Schizoaffective disorder, severe confu-sion, muscle weakness, trouble breath-ing, daytime drowsiness, dizziness. They may also cause you to do things while you are still asleep that you may not re-member the next morning, such as driv-ing. Ambien can also be habit forming.”
Simons believes by Law Enforcement Officers getting better quality sleep, we can reduce the risks of stress we experi-ence by our “Lifestyle”. Try these sugges-tions and for more information you can access undertheshield.com or contact Susan Lewis Simons ([email protected]) and her team directly at (855)889-2348 toll-free.
Good luck and Sweet Dream!!
Fraternally,
Sister Maureen Noe
*As always, if you are experiencing trou-ble falling asleep and staying asleep and none of these suggestions are helpful, check with you Doctor especially those with kidney or heart disease.

HELP YOUR LODGE
A lodge that has an active membership is a more pro-
ductive lodge. Consider what you would like the lodge
to accomplish, and then volunteer to help! THINK of
what we could accomplish if each member agreed to
volunteer 4-8 hours a year. The more people we have
volunteering and helping, the more projects we can
accomplish. We are only limited by our memberships
interest in participating!! Contact a board member and
tell them your interested in helping and if you have a
specific project you would want to work on! Thanks!

2018 LODGE #3 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Fort Collins Trustee-Carly Garner Officer Privacy We live in a digital age, where any-one's personal information is availa-ble at the touch of a finger. It's im-portant for officers and civilian law enforcement personnel to know that your information is out there for an-yone to find online. This can in-clude your name, address, voter registration information, phone number, and a wide range of other private information on you, your spouse, and your family. However, there are some steps you can take to remove this information from the internet, or at least make it more difficult for others to find. There are a myriad of database websites, such as zabasearch.com and fami-lytreenow.com, that offer this infor-mation to the public, but many of these websites allow you to opt out. Simply visit the website and navigate to the opt out option. It may take some time and persis-
tence, especially considering how many of these websites exist, but your piece of mind is worth it. Some websites, such as priva-cyforcops.org, offer services in this area to attempt to remove your private information from numerous accessible online databases. FOP Lodge 3 does not specifically en-dorse any of these services, but we suggest you consider and re-search your options if you want to remove your information from the internet. Additionally, speak with your supervisor about the potential of submitting a form to your county as-sessor's office to remove your proper-ty ownership information from your county's searchable database. This is an allowance offered by the state to law enforcement, and many agencies such as FCPS already have a quick and simple process in place to facili-tate the removal of this infor-mation. And of course, one of the
most important steps you can take to maintain your privacy is to be aware and in control of your social me-dia presence. Whether you choose to use your real name, a pseudonym, or avoid social media all to-gether, it's vital that you understand what your priva-cy settings are and how each social media search engine works to potentially reveal you to the pub-lic. Monitor your posts and your profiles, and talk to your friends and family about your privacy and safety concerns if they are posting about you inappro-priately. Stay safe out there!

PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Chris Renn
P A G E 5 2 0 1 8 - 3 N E W S L E T T E R
A new era begins at Fort
Collins Police Services
Over the past few years
Fort Collins Lodge 3 mem-
bers have experienced
significant improvements
within their police depart-
ment. These improve-
ments include a nearly
complete turnover in exec-
utive leadership, changes
in promotional processes
which have resulted in
outcomes met with over-
whelming line approval, an
overhaul of the position of
rank which has long been
the greatest area of con-
cern according to FOP
surveys, expanded and
improved policies and
training geared towards
ensuring fair and equal
treatment of our members,
much-improved communi-
cation from top to bottom
within Police Services and
vastly improved relation-
ships between the FOP
leadership, police execu-
tive leadership and City
Hall.
There has been nothing
easy about the fight to set
these changes into mo-
tion, the process of transi-
tioning through these
changes or the uncertainty
of where things would land
on the other side! Through
it all Lodge 3 leaders have
committed to being a part
of the reconciliation when
the dust settled within the
department and between
the department and City
Hall. These efforts are
long under way and I'm
proud to report the work of
your Board is making Fort
Collins Police Services a
better place to serve for
our members each day!
I would like to personally
thank all of the brave and
dedicated members who
stepped forward to bring
about this change. I would
also like to thank the new
faces of leadership who
have embraced the
change, and who have
committed to running the
department in such a way
that we never return to old
practices. I would like to
thank the City leaders in
the City Manager's Office
and Human Resources
who have seen these
changes through. Lastly, I
would like to encourage
our members to do their
very best to place any lin-
gering angst or frustra-
tions of the past behind
them and join us as we
move optimistacally into
the future.
And now, in the dawn of
this new era, Fort Collins
members welcome a new chief
of police. Chief Swoboda comes
to Fort Collins from Elgin, IL. By
all accounts Chief Swoboda was
widely respected at his former
agency as a fair and energetic
leader who supports his officers
and ensures they are equipped
to safely and effectively carry
out their job requirements.
These are the primary attributes
Fort Collins Lodge 3 members
have most desired in their chief
of police.
Chief Swoboda, welcome to Fort
Collins! Our members are very
happy you are here and our
Lodge Board looks forward to a
strong and lasting relationship
with you and your executive
staff.
Brothers and Sisters, take care
of each other out there and
please do not hesitate to reach
out to myself, or any of your
board members should you
need anything!
Fraternally,
Christopher J Renn

The Northern Colorado lodge #3 was estab-
lished in 1977. Our lodge was initially orga-
nized by the Fort Collins Police Association,
and originally was Fort Collins lodge #3. We
later became an open lodge and changed the
name to Northern Colorado lodge #3 as we
represented officers from throughout Northern
Colorado. At one point, we had over 700
members.
