From the
The Honors College is proud to announce this year's winners of the Goldwater Scholarship and the National Science Foun-dation Graduate Fellowship.
These national awards recognize outstanding students in the sciences and engineering. The goal of the Goldwater Schol-arship Foundation "is to provide a continuing source of high-
ly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields." The NSF Graduate Fellowships likewise support students in "science, technolo-gy, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pur-suing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at ac-credited United States institutions."
Both of these competitions are highly selective, and even to be a viable contender requires an outstanding academic record, a passion for research, and a commitment to excel-lence.
This years Honors College Goldwater winners are Austin Herbst (Biochemistry and Genetics, Kaylee Kotwis (Biochemistry), Emily Thompson (Physics), and Jennifer Wilson (Plant and Environmental Sciences). Our NSF Fellows are Matthew Byrd (Electrical Engineering), Kate Showers (Bioengineering), and Michael Stoner (Civil Engineering).
If you are interested in applying for a Goldwater or NSF in future years, be sure to see Ricki Shine (Director of Major Fellowships) in 105 Tillman -- and the earlier the better.
Congratulations to all our award winners!

Remembering, Reckoning and Responsibility
Why Do We Study History?
History can sometimes be viewed as a practice of recalling past stories out of curiosity about how others lived before us. But there is another way of viewing the narratives that historians reconstruct about the past.
This lecture discusses the moral di-mensions of writing history. It views history as an important component of a thoughtful and examined life.
