FITNESSDos & Don'ts of a Successful Fitness Plan
Starting a fitness program doesn’t have to beoverwhelming. Once you commit to getting inshape, there are several things you can do to en-sure you’ll meet or exceed your goals. There are also some pitfalls you shouldavoid to help you stay on the path to wellness and fitness. Here’s a list of the dosand don’ts of a successful fitness plan:
Do:1. Assess your fitness level before starting an exercise program. Doing so will
help you establish goals that meet your specific needs.2. Write down your fitness goals. You’re more likely to stick with a program if
you set specific goals.3. Consider talking with your health care provider before embarking on a fitness
program, particularly if you are struggling with a health condition or obesity.4. Always warm up before your workout and cool down afterward.5. Don’t overdo it! You’ll burn out quickly if you try to do too much too soon.
Slowly and moderately increase the intensity of your workouts.6. Diversify your exercise routine. If you do the same exercises each day, you’ll
quickly tire of them and are more likely to skip working out.7. Work out with a friend. You’ll help motivate each other.8. Drink plenty of water before, during and after workouts.
Don’t:1. Skip breakfast. Eating breakfast will jump-start your metabolism and provide
you with the energy you need to get through the day.2. Skip stretching. Be sure to do it after every workout.3. Over train. Your body needs time to recover in between workouts.4. Work out randomly. Work out on a consistent schedule to maximize the
benefits and help you form the habit.5. Set unrealistic goals.6. Give up. Consider talking with a friend when you are discouraged.7. Forget to reward yourself on occasion. Just don't use food as your reward.
Keep an open mind and be flexible when starting a new exercise program. Ifyou set reasonable goals, work hard and consistently, you’ll reap the rewardsof your fitness program and achieve your fitness goals.
