Principal Report

The past fortnight has been a very busy one for staff and students at Kincumber High School. A huge variety of activities have taken place, with staff and students involving themselves in sporting contests, leadership opportunities, academic challenges, Partner Primary School Transition events, professional learning and parent teacher night. Reports on many of these wonderful activities will appear later in the newsletter, but I would like to acknowledge the ongoing commitment that staff at Kincumber High School make to ensure there are numerous extra-curricular opportunities for students at the school.

One of the highlights of the past 2 weeks was our success in the 2016 Central Coast Science & Engineering Challenge & I congratulated all students and teachers involved in this event. Full details about the challenge appear later in this newsletter.

Another very positive event was the Year 6 Sports Transition Day last Friday. Students from our partner Primary Schools, Avoca Beach, Copacabana, Kincumber and Pretty Beach participated in a range of sporting activities, lead by Year 10 Sports Studies classes. Despite the weather not being overly kind, students participated well in the activities, seemed to have a fun filled day, and took the opportunity to meet some of the students from other primary schools and start to become familiar with the high school environment. We look forward to seeing them later in the year in further transition activities.

It was pleasing to see so many parents at the Parent Teacher Night for Years 10, 11 and 12 last week. Feedback from parents was very positive, with many parents commenting on the great work being done by staff. I thank staff for their hard work and appreciate the effort they make to ensure the best outcomes for all students. I also strongly believe the relationship between school and home is imperative to best support all students and would like to thank parents for their attendance at this important school event. The school is always striving to achieve the best for all children, so we are happy to hear from you when you wish to discuss concerns or tell us something positive. The Year 7, 8 and 9 Parent Teacher night is in Term Two.

The wearing of full school uniform has been a focus for the whole school for the majority of Term One and is often one way that the local community judge our school. The school does appreciate the support parents give by ensuring their children are wearing full school uniform. As we move into cooler weather, we ask parents to continue to support the wearing of full school uniform, by purchasing uniform items from approved uniform suppliers, as non-uniform items are not acceptable.

Year 12 exams commence on Tuesday 29 March and will continue until the holidays. I wish all students the best in these exams and remind them that nervousness is normal, because exams tend to make us anxious. Preparation will ensure you are ready to answer questions to the best of your ability and that is all we ask. These exams give students and staff a good idea about what you are good at and what you need extra support in, to meet the rigours of the HSC. Use the time wisely and remember staff are here to help. If you have an unexpected serious illness or misadventure, please ensure you contact the school immediately to ensure you have the correct information about how to address the situation. We endeavour to follow the HSC rules and procedures, so that students are aware of their obligations when the HSC does arrive in October.

I would like to conclude by congratulating two students who have been successful in gaining selection in Australian sporting teams and, while not school events, we believe Australian representation is the pinnacle in most sports and worthy of mention. Mya Harvey has been chosen in the Australian Junior Olympic Hopes Canoe Sprint Team, to compete in Hungary in September, and Kevin Robertson has been selected in the Australian U17 Futsal Team, to compete at the U17 World Cup in Paraguay in July this year.

Transition Sports Day a huge success!

On Friday March 18, over 200 Year 6 students from across 5 different public schools (Kincumber, Avoca Beach, Copacabana, Pretty Beach and Empire Bay) converged on Kincumber High for a fun filled, action packed day of activities, run by our amazing Year 10 PASS students. Our leaders were incredible on the day, making sure that, despite some wet weather, all of the students were engaged and enjoying a broad range of physical activities in a safe, well structured environment. The feedback we have received so far from the students and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to hosting more transition events throughout the year, as well as continuing to provide leadership opportunities for our Year 10 students.

A big thank you also to Mrs. McRae, whose organisational skills greatly contributed to the success of the day, and Mr. Riley, who provided immeasurable support along the way.

Mr. Bradshaw, Year 10 Adviser/PASS teacher

Success in the 2016 Central Coast Science & Engineering Challenge!

Last Monday 14 March, saw some of our 10K & 10I Science students participate in the 2016 Science & Engineering Challenge, held at St. Edwards College, East Gosford. The Challenge is held every year throughout Australia and encourages students to consider study pathways and careers in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

The students were split up into 8 separate groups of 3-4 people. We had spent some of our Science lessons at school preparing for the activities that we would take part on the day. Researching the best ways to make a catapult, hovercraft, earthquake-proof tower, supplying electricity to an entire township, and making a bionic hand were just some of the challenges that the students had ahead of them. Throughout the competition, points were awarded on how well each of the student groups completed the challenges. We were up against seven other Central Coast high schools and the competition was strong!

After a nervous start, we made it to the halfway point of the day in 6th place. As the challenge continued into the afternoon, many of our student groups excelled in their activities, contributing hundreds of points to our final overall score. Special mention must go to Zoe K, Brooke and the two Ruby’s, who came equal first overall with their impressively accurate catapult (even hitting a bullseye!), and Jacob, Braydon & Zoe M who placed first overall in the completion of the “Electricity” challenge. Tate, Lachlan, Daniel & Josh are also to be commended for the construction of their hovercraft in the “Hover Frenzy” challenge. They went in all guns blazing to construct their hovercraft in record time and with extreme precision. It drove like a dream and was the envy of many of the other schools! Consistently high performances from Kristen, Phoebe, Rhianna & Lauren in the “Flatpack Challenge” also contributed to our success on the day.

By the end of the Challenge and numerous, nerve-wracking score updates later, Kincumber High School had crept up to 3rd and 2nd place respectively, before taking out the entire day in FIRST PLACE!

We are extremely proud of this group of young scientists, and knew of their enormous ability and potential to perform well ahead of the day. Even more impressive is that Kincumber High School has not won a Challenge day since 2004, when these kids were in preschool! (obviously preparing to be awesome scientists & engineers!). Our final score put us in third place overall out of 16 local high schools after two days of competition. Congratulations to all students who were involved in the day. I had an absolute ball watching you all have such a fun time, working together and tasting the success of your amazing teamwork, innovation & creativity. YOU SHOULD ALL BE SO PROUD! CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 10 SCIENTISTS!

Science and Shoes

Kincumber High School is a uniform school and, as such, requests that students wear black leather shoes. It is also a WHS requirement that fully closed in leather shoes be worn during practical activities in the Science Labs.

During the year, your child will be required to participate in practical lessons as part of the Science curriculum. Students not wearing the appropriate footwear will not be able to participate in practical lessons. The practical component of the Science curriculum is assessed throughout the year with practical assessment tasks. If a student is unable to participate in an assessable practical activity or assessment task because they do not have appropriate footwear, they will be awarded zero for the practical component of the task.

If there are any financial or other issues with being able to supply the appropriate shoes, please contact me or the school to discuss the options available.

Your cooperation in meeting the WHS requirements for the students in the Science labs is appreciated.

If you have any concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on the school phone: 4369 1555.

Agriculture and Primary Industries Report

The last few weeks have been very busy with the birth of our first calf, managing the chrysanthemum crop, the upcoming honey harvest, the formation of the KHS Square Metre Stud and preparing for the Easter Show. To make it more difficult for the students, the long awaited and wished for rain made it quite difficult to move around the farm and complete the necessary show preparation and work tasks.

Enjoy the Report, Mr Boyd

This KHS Poultry Team Wins Big at the Sydney Royal Easter Show

The students spent a lot of time training, washing and grooming the Silver Pencil Wyandottes before taking them to the show last Wednesday, 16th March. KHS birds were awarded Best Female, Best Male, Champion Silver Wyandotte, 3rd in the Wyandotte Breeding Trio, and 4th in the Pure Bred Laying Section.

The students also won in the Best Tinted Eggs section. This is a fascinating competition challenging them to search for the perfect eggs. Everyone was shocked that there are so many different shapes, colours and sizes of eggs. They want to win more classes in this competition next year.

The Poultry Showmanship Competition

Ten students participated in this competition at the Royal Easter Show last Saturday Morning. All looked very professional in their dress shirts, scarves, ties and coats. They had spent a lot of time preparing with their birds, and studying for their presentation in Sydney.

The students were required to talk about their bird, their bird breed, and were judged on presentation, and their speaking style. Half of the marks were awarded for how they handled their birds. This is a very competitive competition and very difficult to win.

Every KHS student did well, with 2 students being selected to receive awards. Tiarleah Tait was awarded 6th place, and Kane Callan 8th place. Well done to everyone who challenged their ability. We learnt many things this year that should enable a strong performance next year.

The Year 8 Royal Easter Show Excursion

Sixty students travelled to the showground and had a wonderful chance to view some of the wonders of Agriculture. Their first task was to complete some questions that required them to visit all the animal pavilions. They learnt about Merino Sheep, Large White pigs, Red Poll cows, Angora goats and even our own Silver Pencil Wyandottes. The Royal Easter Show is probably the only place to experience what life in the country is like, in one place.

The students had plenty of time to visit the exhibits, buy show bags, and enjoy some rides. Even the rain held off just enough for us to stay dry.

The students were a credit to Kincumber High School and happily did everything asked of them throughout the day.

The Chrysanthemum Crop

This week, the students have been selecting the perfect plant for Mothers’ Day. They have staked, tied, labelled and weeded their plants. They have learnt that if they take time to care for their plant, it will respond and grow well for them. With a bit of luck, and of course good management, all Agriculture students should arrive home with a beautiful chrysanthemum plant for Mothers’ Day.

DOES YOUR CHILD SUFFER FROM ASTHMA?

No medication, including paracetamol and over-the-counter medicines, are to be stored in our first aid kits.

Schools do not supply, or administer, medications in an emergency, unless they have been provided by parents and there is an individual health care plan signed by their doctor for that student.

In an emergency, which has not already been flagged in the emergency/response care section of an individual health care plan, staff will provide a general emergency response and call an ambulance immediately.

In the case of students with asthma they should have their own Ventolin in their bag at all times. Parents are to ensure the school is provided with an up to date Asthma Care Plan, signed by a doctor.

Open Boys Cricket

The Open Boys Cricket Team has progressed through to the next round of the Alan Davidson Shield, following their victory over Brisbane Water Secondary College on Friday March 11. Our boys bowled first and dismissed Brisbane Water for 88 runs. Wade McMahon was the best Kincumber bowler, snaring 3 wickets for just 5 runs. Kincumber then successfully chased down the total with four wickets to spare (6/94). Jake Hardy top scored with 46 runs, and Ryan Lee also batted strongly and steadied the innings for Kincumber.
