The Charting the
Course Kickoff for our
NL year is just around the
corner. I am anxious to
get started on another
great year for Newcomers
Longtimers. There are
many great aspects to our
organization. The one
aspect I look forward to
the most every year is
meeting so many great
new friends, both New-
comers and Longtimers.
The social activities our
group provides can make
the Lake area feel like
home for new arrivals and
provide much more fun
to those looking for more
to do. Pick and choose
the activities you enjoy.
After enjoying the social
activities for the year, we
then wrap up the year
with the Home Tour to
give back to the commu-
nity. There are opportu-
nities for both large and
small involvement, but we
will need everyone to help
with the home tour. Our

Sue’s View—Charting the Course
In just a few short weeks,
NL will be kicking off the
upcoming season – one
that promises to offer
wonderful new activities
and opportunities to ex-
pand our reach through-
out the lake community.
The kickoff will take place
from 4-6pm on
September 28 at the Osage
Beach Elk’s Lodge. This
year’s theme is “Charting the
Course,” which is reflective
of NL’s vision to move for-
ward, with the help of all of
the great ladies in the or-
ganization, in ways that
will continuously improve
what we offer to both our
members and our com-
munity.

combination of work and

I encourage you to get
involved in NL this year.
Come and check out NL
in an open house format
at the Kickoff. I suggest
you pick one activity you
have not yet tried or give
it a second chance. If you
don’t have someone to go
(Continued from page 1) with, give me a call. I
would love to introduce
you to the activity. If I
am not able to attend, I
will find someone who is
attending, that can show
you the ropes. If you
have a new activity that
you think fits our group,
tell a board member. We
are ready to Chart the
Course for new adventures

have, so we appreciate
your help in spreading the
word!
We also encourage every-
one that attends to make
a particular effort to reach
out to those ladies who
are new to the organiza-
tion, or who are visiting
for the first time, and wel-
come them into the NL
sisterhood. We can all
remember how intimidat-
ing it can be to walk into
a roomful of strangers, so
let’s be sure to let them
know we are excited to
have them as part of our
organization and help
them “chart their own
course” as part of NL.

Robinson if you have
any questions, at

First Luncheon of the New Season at Lake Valley Golf Club
Welcome to the new sea-
son of activities from the
"lunch lady"! Luncheons
will start October 19 at
the lovely Lake Valley
Golf Club. The menu in-
cludes salad, grilled pork
tenderloin filet wrapped
in bacon, potatoes au
gratin, Tuscan vegetables,
and cheesecake. Since it is
our first luncheon, and
we may have "newbies"
who sign up at the kick-
off, we will be playing
"getting to know you"
games. Let's make every-
one feel welcome! I think
we will learn some inter-
esting things about each
other! Look for more de-
tails in the Evite I will be
sending the end of Sep-
tember and in next
month's newsletter. Re-
member, I must have the
reservations by the Sun-
day before the luncheons.
The fun starts at 11:00!
Hope to see you there!

Charting the Course—Membership
All members should be looking for-ward to our upcoming Kickoff! We hope you will invite your new neighbors, friends or those ladies that have been here for years but never taken the opportunity to be-come members of Newcomers Longtimers. The Board is planning a full fun filled year for us! Those of you that have not yet done so, don’t forget to renew! If you have changes to your contact
information, please let us know. If you need a picture or a new picture for the directory let us know at the kickoff and we can take it then. We are wanting to grow our mem-bership, so if you know someone that would like to join, the mem-bership registration form for new members is on the web-site: http://www.newcomerslongtimers.com/
Please make your check payable to Newcomers Longtimers. Dues of $20 can be mailed to : Mary A. Overkamp 1675 Torino Cir Osage Beach, MO 65065 [email protected]

One of the first things new members learn about Newcomers/Longtimers is that not only is it a social
organization made up of a group of fun outgoing ladies, but an organization that transforms lives
through financial donations to lake area charities and scholarships for college students.
It takes a group of dedicated Newcomers/Longtimers members to make the Home Tour into a suc-
cessful reality. You can be part of this proud tradition—donating a few hours of your time on
Saturday, May19, 2018.
Volunteers are needed to act as pseudo tour guides and house sitters in some of the most premier
homes the lake has to offer. Shuttle drivers are also needed to help transport volunteers to their as-
signed house.
To volunteer for the 24th annual home tour please contact Nancie Boland at 417-998-5057, by email
at [email protected] or sign up at the Home Tour table at the Kick Off Party on
September 28.

I would like to introduce you to our board by featuring a few ladies in each news-
letter this year. I hope this will help you learn more about the wonderful ladies vol-
unteering their time to make this organization great. It should also help you to un-
derstand the board positions, in hopes that you will consider volunteering for a po-
sition in the future.
Claudia Thomas is our First Vice President or as she refers to herself, “the lunch lady”.
She makes arrangements for the monthly luncheon meetings-location, food, programs and entertainment. She
performs the duties of the president in her absence. Please remember to thank Claudia for the hard work and
planning that she has put into the luncheons.
Claudia hails from West Union, Iowa. The song that cheers her up is the Hawkeye fight song, a true indication
of her Hawkeye fanaticism. Since 2015 Claudia and Mike have retired and called the lake home along with Bo-
gey, their spoiled rotten, two year old Portuguese Water Dog. At this point, Bogey almost has Claudia trained.
She cooks more for Bogey than Mike, which she claims makes both happy. Claudia retired as a child psychia-
trist. Her favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. She lists the lake as her number one favorite place she has visited,
after all they did move here, but loves any place that has water. If you want to cook for her Italian would be a
good choice.
Favorite Quote: It is better to ask forgiveness than permission. (This will serve her well as a board member)
Jane Ferris is our Second Vice President. She is responsible for Cards and Games. She
will choose the location, menu and oversee the event itself. Remember to be appreciative of Jane’s great efforts
to make this fun happen and also be sure new members feel welcomed to play with you.
Jane grew up as a farm girl in Wellington, MO. She and her husband Murry have lived at the lake for twelve
years. They had three children and lost one tragically in a car accident. They have three grandchildren to enjoy,
along with two cats. Jane can be described best as friendly, sincere and loyal. If she has time to waste, why not
on “stupid daytime soap operas”. Her favorite book is the Bible, which may be the reason she is still walking,
not to mention snow skiing and wave running, after breaking her back in a boating accident ten years ago. She
loves the hustle and bustle of New York City and would love to visit over the 4th of July. That just goes with her
sparkling personality and wardrobe.
Jane’s advice for someone moving to the lake: Get involved with the community.

Susan Akscin is our Newsletter Editor, the title of this position pretty much explains itself. She puts the
newsletter together for our enjoyment and makes it so visually pleasing with her graphic skills.
Susan is from St. Louis and her husband of forty three years, John, is from New York. They have one daughter
and one grandson who is starting his first year of college. John and Susan have been lake residents full time for
two and half years. They have two older, rescued Yorkshire terriers, Haddie and Havie. Susan likes to study graph-
ic design, shop for clothing (which shows in her really great wardrobe), read, and garden. She enjoys Happy Hour,
especially if it involves a summer ride with the convertible top down. She loves Sun Valley, Idaho for its beauty
and her childhood memories were renewed with a surprise birthday trip there in 2011. She is a creative, animated
and innovative lady who survived her most embarrassing moment of a costume malfunction on stage in St. Louis.
Unknown fact about Susan: Her great-great uncle, Chris von der Ahe, founded the St. Louis Browns in 1882. His
picture hangs in the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum.
We are so blessed to have these ladies on the board. Please show them your appreciation and kindness.

It's our first Dining Out for this Newcomer's season on Tuesday, October
10th at HK's in the Lodge of Four Seasons. The first of what I hope will be a
fun year of restaurant exploration as we chart our course around the lake. The
full list of restaurants for this season and menus for the first four venues will
be available at the Kick-Off at the Elk's in Osage Beach September 28th. How-
ever, since our kick-off is a bit later this year, it would be a good idea to get
your reservations and payment in for our dinner early.
If you haven't been to the Lodge lately you will see some welcome renovations
and changes. HK's is offering a much more varied menu and pricing and a really great Happy Hour, too. We can
enjoy Happy Hour at HK's bar from 5 to 6 pm. At 6 we will go to the traditionally decorated Escollo Room for
dinner.
Our all inclusive dinner offer's house salad with choice of Ranch or Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing.
Entrees are
Chicken Picatta sautéed in a mushroom lemon caper butter sauce,
Atlantic Salmon char-grilled with a port wine reduction,
London Broil marinated and then grilled
Pork Loin with ginger teriyaki sauce.
Entrees are accompanied by a vegetable and starch, rolls and butter, coffee or tea and chef's choice of dessert. As
always price includes tax and tip, as well.
Pricing for this dinner is $38.00 per person. An Evite will be coming shortly. Be sure to click reply when respond-
ing. You should then get an email confirming your reply. No computer? Feel free to call me, Donna Steele, at 1-
702-328-4505. Reservations and checks must be made out to and mailed to me at 4675 Harbor Heights
Lane, Osage Beach, Mo. 65065, by October 3rd.
I know many of you flee to warmer climates for the winter and are only able to attend the October, April or May
Dining Outs. Happily the lodge can accommodate as many as wish to attend including couples, singles and mem-
ber's invited guests. It will really be good to see everyone and catch up on all the summer happenings.

What a glorious sight, to witness the total eclipse. Jane Wright, our Special Activities Chair, planned a won-derful day at Redfield Gold Course in Eugene for the special day. We had over one hundred people in attendance. Jane showed off her teacher prowess with a few quizzes and demonstrations while waiting on the eclipse to reach totality. Everyone had so much fun, we talked about having a “No Eclipse” party next year!
