a message from pastor BrentA Word about Good FridayTheGospelofLukerecountstheeventsofthatdarkdaywecall“GoodFriday”:“JustbeforeJesusdied at about noon, darkness covered the whole land until three o’clock in the afternoon, while thesun’slightfailed, andthecurtainofthetemplewastornintwo.ThenJesuscryingwithaloudvoice, said: ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.’ When he had said this he breathed his last.”

We often miss thedetailofthetearingofthecurtaininthetemple.Yet,ithasgreatsignificance.Theveil,thetemple curtain hid the Holy of Holies, the place where the very presence of God dwelled…the place where no human being could enter except the High Priest, and he only once a year on the day of atonement. The tearing of thecurtainremindsusthatthroughhisdeathonthecross,God’spresencewasopentoall…thatJesushadmadeGodaccessibletoeveryperson.AfriendfromZionsharedatouchingpoemthathewrotemanyyearsago(withhis permission I share it with you): The holy of holies,

held secret behind the veil, rent by God’s response, exposed.

Is only an empty room to those who lack faithto walk through the portal wide.

Join us for Good Friday worshipasthetemplecurtainisonceagainpulledbackandweseetheamazinggraceofa loving God through the lens of the cross of Christ.

Yes, There is Hope…The newspaper headlines in 2017 can leave one despairing…from the threat of terrorism, ISIS, North Korea’s nuclear threat, Russia’s aggression in Europe, and the current political climate and division, not to mention the struggles so many of us face in our individual lives. At times, it seems almost hopeless. We wonder“isthereanyhope?”

In the early part of World War II a Navy submarine was stuck on the bottom of the harbor in New York City. It seemed that all was lost. There was no electricity and the oxygen was quickly running out. In one last attempt torescuethesailorsfromthesteelcoffin,theU.S.NavysentashipequippedwithNavydiverstothespotonthesurface, directly above the wounded submarine. A navy diver went over the side into the dangerous depths in one last rescue attempt. The trapped sailors heard the metal boots of the diver land on the exterior surface, and theymovedtowheretheythoughttherescuerwouldbe.InthedarknesstheytappedinMorsecode,“Isthereanyhope?”Thediverontheoutside, recognizingthemessage, signaledbytappingontheexteriorofthesubmarine,“Yes,thereishope!”

The Easter Gospel tells us of the fear and uncertainty that the women experienced as they stood in the tomb whereJesushadbeenburiedanddiscoveredthatitwasempty.Surelytheymusthavebeenwondering“Isthereanyhope?”Thentheangelsaidtothem:“Donotbeafraid;youarelookingforJesuswhowascrucified.Hehasbeenraised.Heisnothere!”Thetombwasempty!Jesushaddonewhatnoonebeforehadeverdone—herosefromthedead.Heovercamedarkness,evilandevendeath.“Yes,thereishope!”

We will gather togetheronEasterweekendtoonceagainheartheEasterGospel:“Yes!Thereishope!”Ithinkitis one we all are anxious to hear.

Christ is Risen!
