Message from the chair:
Mrs Moira Strauss
Dear Readers:
This issue marks the 3rd anniversary of the
Calitzdorp Tourism Newsletter! It has proven to be a wonderful tool to disseminate a broad range of
information and increase awareness about news
and upcoming events, in and around Calitzdorp.
Thanks also to the Tourism staff, Erina and Jadé,
for their excellent work in the lay out, setting and distribution of the Newsletter. They transform
information into an electronic file, creates a text
version and sends it to nearly 500 subscribers!
We also wish to thank the many contributors who
have supplied us with outstanding content. Please
remember that we accept articles for our publication that describe your products and the
progress you have made, as well as news from your
side.
Nuusbrief.

Pilates Classes
What is Pilates
Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, and popular in many countries. Pilates called his method
"Contrology" (from "control").
Pilates is a body conditioning routine that may help build flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips and back. It
puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing, and developing a strong core or center, and improving coordination and balance. Pilates'
system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. Intensity can be increased over time as the
body conditions and adapts to the exercises.
Anita Bentel, Physcotherapist and qualified Pilates teacher, is offering Pilates classes at the Calitzdorp Station, Monday and Wednesdays at 09:30am
to 10:30am. The cost will be R40.00 per lesson. Lessons will start shortly.

Famous quotes
Dalai Lama 150 x 150
www.brainyquote.com
Quote:
Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.
Who is the Dalai Lama?
The Dalai Lama is a high lama in the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" school of Tibetan
Buddhism, founded by Tsongkhapa (1357–1419). The name is a combination of the
Mongolian word dalai meaning "Ocean" and the Tibetan word བླ་མ་ bla-ma (with a
silent "b") meaning "guru, teacher".[1]
According to Tibetan Buddhist doctrine, the Dalai Lama is the rebirth in a line
of tulkuswho are metaphorically considered to be manifestations of the bodhisattva of
compassion,Avalokiteśvara. The Dalai Lama is often thought to be the leader of
the Gelug School, but this position belongs officially to the Ganden Tripa, which is a
temporary position appointed by the Dalai Lama who, in practice, exerts much influence.
The line of Dalai Lamas began as a lineage of spiritual teachers; the 5th Dalai
Lama assumed political authority over Tibet.
For certain periods between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lamas sometimes
directed the Tibetan government, which administered portions of Tibet from Lhasa.
The14th Dalai Lama remained the head of state for the Central Tibetan
Administration("Tibetan government in exile") until his retirement on March 14, 2011. He
has indicated that the institution of the Dalai Lama may be abolished in the future, and also
that the next Dalai Lama may be found outside Tibet and may be female.[2] The Chinese
government rejected this and asserted that only it has the authority to select the next Dalai
Lama.[3]

The ball
How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it
come back to you, even if it doesn't bounce off anything?
There is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or
throws it back to you.
The solution to this teaser will be in next weeks
news letter.

Gallery Route 62 have set up a small and comfortable coffee shop in the gallery
I am pursuing my other passion, of baking, and to this end have set up a small and comfortable coffee shop in the gallery. I will be
serving coffee and tea with a small but delicious range of cakes and tarts. I use only free range eggs and butter in my baking and
will constantly be whipping up new mouth watering creations.
Special occasions will be happily catered for.
The gallery itself is constantly undergoing changes with new artworks on display. Mostly supported by the many talented artists
living in Calitzdorp and the surrounds, I also have other artists from further afield.
The Gallery & Coffee Shop will be open from 9.30am to 5pm every day except Sundays and Tuesdays. During the holidays I will
be open every day.

Kraaldoring Gallery Opening
KRAALDORING GALLERY on the Groenfontein Road, 11 kms outside of Calitzdorp
In 2010 Clementina van der Walt, ceramic artist from Cape Town and her partner Albie Bailey purchased a portion of the original Kraaldoorn farm from
Francois Potgieter. At the time this consisted of several derelict outbuildings, including an old barn, and a Victorian style house which was originally a
school. This appears to have been a school for children of the farmers of the district in the 1930’s and earlier. The house itself was probably built around the
turn of the century. There is also a graveyard with names like Potgieter, Nel on the stones. There seems to be no apparent record of the identity of labourers
who lived and worked on the farm.
Over the past 2 years Clementina and Albie have been busy renovating and restoring the buildings with the assistance of a local builder (who was born in the
vallery) Attie Januarie and his team.
With the addition of windows, extra outside doors and a stoep, the old barn has been transformed into a beautiful spacious venue sporting textured white
washed walls for hanging art works and small alcoves in which ceramics and other items can be displayed. The lights in the gallery are solar powered, and
there is an additional atmospheric touch created by vintage light bulbs which are powered by a small generator.
The ceilings have been restored with the traditional method of packed reeds on which there sits a clay layer for insulation. The beams supporting the reeds
are the original poplar beams which have now been scrubbed clean, still retaining the warm organic texture.
Clementina and Albie plan to hold a themed exhibition at the gallery several times a year, around festival dates such as the KKNK, the Port Festival and so
on.
Future plans include workshops in ceramics, painting, writing and other cultural activities.
The space will also serve as a studio space for Clementina to make her signature hand built ceramic pieces
As they only spend part of each month at the farm (the rest of the time they are working in their studio in Woodstock, Cape Town) the gallery and studio will
be open by appointment for the days that they are at the farm.
There is no landline and no cell phone reception in the area, so the only method of communication is via email [email protected] or via Whatsapp
which is a smart phone application for text messages. Regular sms’s do not work – except when they drive into the dorp to purchase provisions!

KRAALDORING GALLERY – OPENING EXHIBITION
On Saturday March 30
th 2013, Clementina van der Walt and Albie Bailey opened the doors of their new gallery, Kraaldoring, on the farm Kraaldoorn 11 kms
outside of Calitzdorp in the beautiful Groenfontein valley.
The theme of the opening exhibition was loosely inspired by San cave paintings of the Klein Karoo, as well as flora of the region. Clementina van der Walt
presented subtly painted plates depicting mystical creatures, Ben Coutouvidis constructed exquisite meticulous wire drawings of plants, some inspired by San
children drawings in the Bleek collection. The metal cut-outs of Danie Daschner reflected local plants such as aloes, as well as fun images of old trucks and
tractors. Green glazed ceramic rabbits by Nico Masemula nestled in an alcove, viewing the patrons from a distance….Together with earthy functional
ceramics, hand made cards collaged with photographs of the local environment, the show exuded a sense of the tranquillity and beauty of the Klein Karoo,
resonating comfortably with the awesome landscape surrounding the venue.
Clementina and Albie were delighted to host an extraordinarily large crowd of visitors – 60- 70 – who thoroughly enjoyed both the visual and gastronomic
feast. Over the Easter weekend many people both local and from further afield, continued to explore the gravel road leading from Calitzdorp past the dam to
this surprising new venue ‘seemingly in the middle of nowhere’ -and then on to De Oude Poskantoor – a delightful coffee shop and gallery about 3 kms
further on the gravel road.
Dream Project
1. Rommel optel dag - 6 April 2013 Roete: Vanaf busstop in Bergsig, langs ou sementpad op (omtrent 200m)
Suzette Pokas se spannetjie
het boodskappe op die
swartsakke geverf en vir
die gemeenskap gewys.
Die trotse man het eerste
vyf swartsakke volgemaak.
400 swartsakke is binne 2
ure vol rommel opgetel.
dag in Calitzdorp.
Zoar se blaasorkes was so vriendelik om di
help skoonmaak. Die meeste van die
stappers was van laerskool Excelsior in
Bergsig. Ons het binne twee ure 400
swartsakke vol rommel gemaak. Dit was
voorwaar 'n goeie spanpoging.
twee maande.
Die eerste stappers het rondom 08:00 begin optel
Dit was maar baie vuil plek-plek
Die blaasorkes speel uit volle bors
Regs:
Cheryl De Villiers van Die Ou Stasie op Calitzdorp (voorheen 'n
kleuterskool onderwyseres), het gesorg vir heerlike vermaak by

Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important habitats for birds
include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on
the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates;
(d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation, which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not
normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not
otherwise enter the Little Karoo.
The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete and the compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.

Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of
Southern Africa: 2nd edition 2005.
ID: 55
Species: White-breasted Cormorant
Spotted: recorded January to December; resident.
The White-breasted Cormorant (Phalacrocorax lucidus) is much
like the widespread Great Cormorant and if not a regional variant of
the same species, is at least very closely related. It is distinguished
from other forms of the great cormorant by its white breast and by the
fact that subpopulations are freshwater birds.[1] Phalacrocorax
lucidus is not to be confused with the smaller and very different
endemic South Australian Black-faced Cormorant, which also is
sometimes called the white breasted cormorant.
White-breasted Cormorant
Taxonomy and description: The White-breasted Cormorant(Phalacrocorax lucidus) is a member of the cormorant family Phalacrocoracidae.
Its taxonomic status has been under discussion for some decades[2] and several questions still have not been definitively settled.Phalacrocorax
lucidus sometimes is treated as a subspecies of the Great Cormorant,Phalacrocorax carbo lucidus, but some authorities (e.g. Sibley & Monroe,
1990, Sinclair, Hockey and Tarboton, 2002) retain its original treatment as an allospecies in theP. carbo superspecific group, in which case it is
referred to as Phalacrocorax lucidus. A black-necked form originally classified asPhalacrocorax patricki or Phalacrocorax carbo patricki is now
regarded as synonymous withPhalacrocorax lucidus.
As its name suggests, the 80–100 cm long White-breasted Cormorant has a white neck and breast when adult, and the white area tends to increase
as the bird becomes more mature. In other respects it is a large cormorant generally resembling the Great Cormorant.
The smaller and very different Southern Australian Black-faced Cormorant, Phalacrocorax fuscescens, is also sometimes known as the White-
breasted Cormorant.
Distribution: The White-breasted Cormorant is the only form of Great Cormorant found in sub-Saharan Africa, the only form that has strictly
freshwater populations and the only form with a white breast and throat; it does however interbreed freely with dark-breasted forms in central
Africa.[1] It has a wide distribution; on the west coast from the Cape Verde Islands to Guinea-Bissau and from Angolato the Cape of Good
Hope and northwards on the east coast to Mozambique. It occurs around the entire Southern African coastline, but it is not clear whether the
coastal populations are separate from the inland populations. On the African mainland it occurs more frequently in Eastern and Southern parts,
rather than in the drier Western regions, where it usually is found only on perennial rivers and dams. On inland waters it commonly occurs together
with the Reed Cormorant and the African Darter, but it is ecologically separated from these species by its fishing habits and the size and nature of
its prey.[1] There are also inland populations in Nigeria and around Lake Chad, and in Eastern and Southern Africa from Sudan southwards. It can
be found around the Red Sea, where it is sometimes referred to as the Red Sea White-Breasted Cormorant.

leer.
skoolkinders te betrek by hierdie projek.
2 Lorrievragte rommel is opgetel.

Hou asb hierdie
spasie dop vir kennisgewing oor 'n volgende vergadering.
o Saterdagoggend mark
The Saterdagoggendmark got off to a modest but positive start
last Saturday. Fourie Street is ideal for a market and this
Saturday the weather should be lovely.
Sandy and Mize and Annamarie Conradie sold all
their delicious wares and will be back with more. Blackie has
real collectables, Meisie Arnold will be selling pancakes. The
market table will be groaning with local stuff, Penny Rudder's
real butter biscuits sing to the taste buds and there will be books
and plants.
Hope to see you there.
Judy
Judy.
o Hope Options - Ministry Report (Jan to March 2013)
COUNSELLING:
January: 12 new and 7 follow-ups ; February: 9 new and 3 follow-ups ; March: 6 new and 3 follow-ups
One of our clients this quarter was a rape survivor: We just realise every day the crucial need for our services. We were able to support her and
comfort her through counselling sessions and spoiled her with a comfort pack (handbag with toiletries we offer our rape/molested/abused victims) –
we are very grateful to the local NG Church for supplying us with the comfort packs for these survivors. Many times the greatest need is just to be
listened to and feel loved, to know that you are special NO MATTER WHAT. Thank you also to the other organizations in our community that
refer clients to us as well as the SAPD. Together we make a difference.
YOUTH EVENTS:
THINKING SCRUM / DVD SERIES / COFFEE EVENING: We started off this quarter with a Coffee Evening at a local coffee shop, we are excited that we have 6 NEW members and that they attended most
of the sessions that followed.
***KEEPING THE FIZZ IN YOUR FAITH – It’s easy to be side tracked by friends and the pressures of this world. If your faith is firm and
fizzing you can stand much stronger when the challenges come. We also met new friends and had coffee.
***We finished showing the DVD series “My really bad date” – What can go wrong in relationships and how to start over and the right way – the
core message of these dvd’s relate to abstinence and choices. One of the youth commented that he wished he did these sessions earlier, then he
wouldn’t have been in the current crisis he was in, but that he is grateful that next time he will know better. ***KICKBALL – We sometimes THINK we know what is best for us and what WE want is the answer, but many times we can’t see the bigger
picture and what GOD has in store for us. We want the “tennis ball”, he can give us a “soccer ball”, but we are too busy to throw tantrums for what
we want, we miss the greatest opportunities to reach out to others and also see the plans for our own lives.
We present youth evenings every Thursday and the topics are interactive with games and group work. The group is increasing slowly, we are
excited to see that the sessions mean something to them and that they can take what they have learned and apply it in life as well as spread the news
to other youth.
MOVIE NIGHT – 2 x Special events: We had two bigger events where we showed two new released dvd’s: “Courageous” and “October Baby”. It was a great success. The first 50 men
and women (for each separate dvd night) received a toiletry bag as an incentive filled with: a toothbrush, toothpaste, roll-on and razor. (We are
planning two other events soon) – (TOTAL: 52 attended)
“Courageous” 34 attended - this dvd is about HONOR BEGINS AT HOME: a group of police men decides to take a stand for what is right in their
family, work, friendships and with God. Being the husband and father, they were called to stand up and fill their position in their families; there are
a lot of men and women that wants to attend the Bible study starting soon.
OCTOBER BABY: 18 attended - this dvd is about a young lady finding out she was adopted and an abortion survivor and her journey of
forgiveness. The message of forgiveness is powerful and one person that attended said she feels this evening was specifically for her because she
struggles with unforgiveness. We are so grateful that this made a difference in their lives.
OTHER:
AWARENESS PROGRAM AT LOCAL CLINIC: We do ongoing weekly awareness at the Local Clinic about different topics with the pregnant mothers as well as the mothers at the baby clinic. We
chose this month: Violence against women & children, rape, abuse, unplanned pregnancy, choices, info related to pregnancy and you are special
(worth a lot) - we were at the clinic 6 days so far and reached 126 women. Thank you to our Clinic for this opportunity.
INVITATION FROM ACVV – TALK ON DRUG & ALCOHOL ABUSE: We were also invited by the ACVV to do a talk on Drug & Alcohol abuse (warning signs, identification of drugs, how can I help). We reached 17
women and 1 man and also invited them to attend our out-of-school youth program. Thank you to the ACVV for the invitation.
PRAYER REQUESTS: Please pray with us re: the Awareness Campaigns at the clinic, that people will come for counselling and support.
Please keep praying for our finances and thank you for praying for our volunteers, clients, board and management.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS, PRAYER WARRIORS, VOLUNTEERS & BOARD – GOD IS FAITHFUL!!
Blessings,
Chantélle & Shelden Sneygans

o ACVV – Maart vakansie programme
Leerders was
opgewonde en het self-die verf gemeng.
Me. Bakelwa Madylbi van dept. Pad
