SOUTHGATE — A 53-year-old resident was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly stab-bing his mother to death last Wednesday.
Police said the death is the first homicide in the city in more than two years.
James Alan Shields was arraigned Friday in connec-tion with the death of Irene Shields, 86, in their house in the 12300 block of Longtin Street. She was stabbed multiple times.
Her son was arrested at the house Thursday.
The Michigan State Police Crime Lab was called to collect evidence. A pre-liminary examination of the evidence against Shields is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 20 in 28th District Court.
The last homicide in the city was early Feb. 13, 2010, outside Gleason’s Bar and Grille, which has since closed. Elijah Keith Young, 42, was shot four times in the back as he was leaving the bar after an argument. He died minutes later as friends attempted to take him to a hospital.

HURON TWP. — A bal-loon release is planned for noon tomorrow during a service in memory of Kyle Holland at Michigan Memorial Park, 32163 Huron River Drive.
The service will mark the second anniversary of his death.
Kyle was 5 years old when a dog owned by the man his mother was seeing at the time killed him as he slept at a home in the 1500 block of Empire Avenue in Lincoln Park on July 12, 2010.
After a yearlong inves-tigation by several law
enforcement agencies and animal experts, his mother, Debbralyn Holland, and her now ex-boyfriend, Earl Dwayne Adkins, were charged in June 2011 with multiple felonies in the boy’s death.
The preliminary exami-nation of the evidence against them lasted several days and they both pleaded guilty in April in front of Wayne County Circuit Judge Annette Berry.
Holland, 31, pleaded guilty to all three charges she faced: involuntary man-slaughter, accessory after the fact and second-degree child abuse. Adkins, 37, was charged with dangerous animal death and posses-
sion with intent to deliver/manufacture marijuana. He pleaded guilty to the charge of dangerous animal death, which is treated similar to manslaughter. The marijua-na charge was dropped.
Holland pleaded no contest and faces between 29 months and 15 years in prison.
Adkins entered into a sen-tencing agreement and is expected to serve 24 months to 15 years in prison.
Berry will sentence them Friday.
