March 2018 Trivia Question Winner
Thane Allison won a San Gabriel
Valley Region T-Shirt by giving the
highest answer without going over (in
fact, thane gave the exact correct
answer:
Question:
The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS
may be the most desired of all 911
models. It was originally a
homologation special to allow the
911 to race in the FIA Group 4 Special
Grand Touring class.
A Brumos Carrera RS driven by Peter
Gregg and Hurley Haywood won the
1973 Daytona 24 as a prototype
because homologation wasn’t
granted till March 1st.
Porsche was concerned that they
couldn’t sell enough but the initial
production run sold out in a week.
Porsche eventually built 1,580
Carreras.
Question: How many Carrera RS cars did Porsche have to build to gain homologation?
Answer:
500

We hope you are enjoying the San Gabriel Valley Region smartphone app. As you know, it lists all the

In early October 2017, a vendor who was also an SGVR member harvested e-mail addresses and began
sending advertising to those addresses, which was contrary to our terms of service. We have received

29 June-2 July 2018, 968 West Coast Gathering
There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in Sonora, CA, June 29th to July 2nd. Sonora is
located on historic CA Highway 49, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains! Think Winding
Mountain Roads!
In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills,
in the heart of California’s “Gold
Country” lies Sonora, named after the
miners from Sonora Mexico who settled
the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen
of the Southern Mines”, Sonora still
holds onto its historic downtown charm
while thriving as the commercial,
government and cultural center for the
region. This should be a great base for
scenic drives, social time with fellow
968’ers and exploring the local region!
For those who made the 968 Gathering in S. Lake Tahoe, this is a little southwest of that and we will
have an opportunity to enjoy some of the same styles of roads and scenery! Stops are being planned at
several nearby historical venues.

Sunday 29 April 2018, Cinco de Mayo Continuous Lapping AX and Golf
Event
Registration is now open for Southern Arizona Region’s annual Cinco de Mayo continuous lapping AX
and Golf Event.
The Zone 8 AX will be held on 29 April at Musselman Honda Circuit, you will have plenty of track time.
New for this year is that all drivers will have a transponder assigned to them and all laps will be
recorded. Additionally, we will have more shade available to you when you are in the pit area. This
event sold out last year causing us to turn participants away. Do not miss your opportunity to participate
at this fun event.
Registration is also open for Cinco de May Golf Event being held on 3 May at the Tucson National,
Catalina Course. This course has been host to the PGA tour from 1965 to 2006 and since 2015 hosts the
Champions Tour Cologuard Classic. The Catalina course is considered a traditional-style layout with
gentle contours and tree-lined fairways with spectacular views. This course is said to be a fair test of golf
to players of all caliber with a challenging finish at the 18th hole.
For Registration go to: http://www.pcasar.motorsportreg.com/

Volunteers Needed!
I am reaching out to you to help with the 2018
California Festival of Speed taking place April 20
thru April 22, with set-up on Thursday April 19,
2018. Visit
www.zone8.org/events/speedfestival.php to
learn more! Or see us on Facebook at
www.facebook.com/CaliforniaFestivalOfSpeed.
We need about 400 volunteers to make the
California Festival of Speed a success again. If
you are interested in helping please email me
ASAP so I can get you on the schedule. Some jobs go very quickly! Without enough volunteers we can’t
safety put on such a large event. This is Zone 8’s largest event and proceeds from it subsidize the cost of
Zone activities such as the End of Year Awards Banquet. Also, by volunteering, a portion of the profits
are returned to the Regions based upon the number of shifts you work…so the more the merrier!
I have positions available for the following days and times:
Thursday Set-up: 8:00 till done Corral: (Porsche parking) morning shift: 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon, afternoon 12:00 noon to
5:00 PM (Fri, Sat, Sun) Grid: morning 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon, afternoon 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM (long pants required)
(Fri, Sat, Sun) Traffic Control: morning early shift 6:00 to 8:00, 8:00 to 12:30, afternoon 12:30 to 5:00. We
really need to fill these positions. (Fri, Sat, Sun) Autocross: morning, set-up 8 to 9, 8:00 to 12:30; afternoons 12:30 to 5 (Sat and Sun only) Track Tours: 10:30 to 1:30 (Fri, Sat, Sun) Goodie Store: morning 8:00 to 12:30, afternoon 12:30 to 5:00 (Fri, Sat, Sun) Membership Booth: morning 8:00 to 12:330, afternoon 12:30 to 5:00 (Sat, Sun) Timeline: 7:30 to 12:30, 12:30 to 5:00 (Sat, Sun) Tear Down: 3:00 until done (Sun) Kids’ Pit Saturday 10:00 to 2:00. This is a new event just for kids! Parents will be required to
stay with the children. (Sat)
We are seeking a sticker design for the Kids’ Pit on Saturday. Get out your paper pencils or crayons and
submit your design! Send submissions to: [email protected]

Saturday, 21 April 2018, 55 Years of 911 Timeline at the 2018 California Festival of
Speed
On Saturday at this year's California Festival of Speed we will continue our tradition of displaying a
timeline of exceptional Porsches for the public's viewing pleasure.
We invite you to submit your car for consideration to be a part of this fantastic display.
This year the timeline will consist of 911's -- hopefully one of each vintage for the 55 years that the 911
has been in production.
The timeline will be displayed in the center of all the action near vendor's row; where it will be the focus
of all who attend.
This is your chance for you and your car to be famous! Come get your 15 minutes of fame!
Registration ends on 7 April 2018, 11:59 PM PDT at msreg.com/55Timeline 5

26-30 March 2018, Modern Pentathlon at the Pomona Fairplex
The 2018 Modern Pentathlon World Cup is coming to Southern California at Fairplex featuring several
sports including swimming, horsemanship, running, shooting and fencing.
History of Modern Pentathlon
Modern Pentathlon was introduced to the world in the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm, Sweden in 1912.
Pierre De Coubertin, the Founder of the International Olympic Committee, believed the modern
pentathlon "tested a man’s moral qualities as much as his physical resources and skills, producing
thereby the ideal, complete athlete.”
The Modern Pentathlon was inspired by the traditional track and field pentathlon held during the
ancient Olympics. Modern was added to the title to distinguish it from the ancient version.
The original pentathlon events were modeled after the skills needed by an ideal Greek soldier at that
time. The competitor was to ride an unfamiliar horse, fight enemies with pistol and sword, swim, and
run to return to his own soldiers.
The newer modern pentathlon events are modeled after the skills needed by a more modern day
cavalrybehind enemy lines.
The name derives from the Greek word “péntathlon” meaning "contest of five events".
Famous World War II General and San Gabriel, California native George S. Patton finished fifth in the
first ever Olympic Modern Pentathlon.

Killer bee attack sends A.J. Foyt to the hospital
From Fox News (With AP), 16 March 2018
American auto racing legend A.J. Foyt was hospitalized this week after he was attacked by a swarm of
Africanized killer bees on his Texas ranch.
The four-time Indianapolis 500 champion was working with a bulldozer when he disturbed the bees’
hives and instigated the response.
It was the second time the 83-year-old Foyt caused the same type of incident, the first coming in 2005
when he was stung 200 times in his head. A fact his racing team made light of on its website, noting A.J.
Foyt VS Killer Bees: Foyt 2 - Bees 0.
A.J. Foyt Racing said in a statement that Foyt was released from a Texas hospital once he was stabilized.
The team said this second bee attack was more serious than the first because the first encounter made
Foyt more sensitive to bee stings.

Foyt will miss this weekend's Twelve Hours of Sebring. He was scheduled to be inducted into Sebring's
Hall of Fame on Friday night and was the scheduled grand marshal for Saturday's race.
Said Foyt: "I look like I had a fight with Mike Tyson and lost. Right now I'm on so much medication that
I'm not feeling that great, so I'll take the doctors' advice to rest for the next couple days."
Foyt also pulled out of grand marshal duties for the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 in 2012 because he
was battling a staph infection.
