Who are they for? These tests are designed for:– schools which do not have entrance
examinations in English– new classes where the teacher knows
nothing about the level of the students – teachers who are trying to decide which
level of New Opportunities is mostappropriate.
The testsThe tests focus primarily on grammar, asthe clearest indicator of a student’s abilityin the language. In addition, there is somelimited testing of collocation and lexicalitems. The tests cover material typicallylearnt from beginner to intermediate level. The context of questions is biased towardsteenagers and young adults and is derivedfrom the New Opportunities Students’Books.
The structureEach test consists of 80 multiple-choicequestions, in order to make themstraightforward for students to answer andquick and easy for teachers to mark.
There are two parallel tests (designated Aand B) for each of three levels:
Test 1 A and B Beginner to ElementaryTest 2 A and B Elementary
to Pre-intermediateTest 3 A and B Pre-intermediate
to Intermediate
In each case, the test is biased towards thehigher of the two levels. Thus Test 3 is moreIntermediate than it is Pre-intermediate.
Administration and scoring– Each test should take approximately
30 minutes to complete. – Answers are marked in boxes on
a separate answer sheet. – Each correct answer earns 1 point,
adding up to a maximum of 80 pointsper test.
– Students can be divided into twogroups, each taking a different test (A or B).
– Answer keys for Tests A and B areprinted on pages 13-18 of this booklet.
– The teacher may choose to administeronly a quarter or half of a test if s/hedoes not expect the students to exceeda particular level. However, to obtain thefullest picture of a student’s ability, wewould recommend administering thewhole test.
ValidityAlthough the tests only seek to determine a student’s ability in English grammar theyshould be indicative enough to enableteachers to group students broadlyaccording to level and to select theappropriate New Opportunities Students’Book. If time allows, the teacher may ofcourse choose to hold individual or groupinterviews to ascertain whether there areany significant discrepancies betweenstudents’ grasp of grammar and theirability in terms of language skills (listening, reading, speaking, fluency etc.)
Interpretation of resultsThe following scoring bands indicatewhere students should be placed. However, there are cases, particularlyborderline cases, where teachers shoulduse their discretion in deciding whether a student will benefit from starting at a higher or lower level.
Test 1 40 – 40 points Beginner40 – 80 points Elementary
Test 2 40 – 40 points Elementary40 – 80 points Pre-intermediate
Test 3 40 – 40 points Pre-intermediate40 – 80 points Intermediate
