The Heartland Games were launched in 2013 as a means to celebrate those seniors leading healthy and active lives, and to provide an enjoyable forum in which to do so. With the addition of track and field in 2016, Heartland Games drew in a whole new level of enthused participants. “I do this to stay healthy and fit!” says Carolyn Langenwalter, a 78-year-old sprinter.

Senior Services, Inc. Of Wichita is not a government organization. We are a not-for-profit charity which relies on several funding sources, including private donations, to operate our programs and senior centers:

Mission:Senior Services, Inc. Of Wichita is dedicated to delivering services that allow older adults the opportunity to lead quality lives while continuing to make positive contributions to the community.
Roving Pantry - Senior Services Best Kept Secret Have you heard about our Roving Pantry Program? It’s a service that helps homebound people age 60 years + who are able to prepare meals on their own, remain independent and in their own homes. Maintaining adequate nutrition is a challenge as we grow older. Grocery shopping can be a challenge for people who have mobility limitations or vision impairments. Roving Pantry service can be particularly helpful for people recovering from surgery or illness and who cannot venture out of their homes until recovery is complete. Roving Pantry is one of our programs that help seniors with this challenge. Not only does Roving Pantry offer a peace of mind to friends and family members concerned about a loved one’s access to fresh food, clients call in their orders, then the Roving Pantry staff shops for the orders and deliversto clients. When coupled with the Meals on Wheels program Senior Services is able to meet 100% of the daily nutritional needs for homebound seniors.
How does Roving Pantry exactly work?
• Simply call in your grocery order, Monday through Friday• We will shop for your fresh groceries, as well as other toiletries and household items.• We then deliver the groceries to your home and you pay for your groceries at the time of delivery.
Application and eligibility screenings are typically completed over the phone, and service can usually start within a week of application. If determined eligible, the applicant can place an order on the next scheduled order day. Deliveries are scheduled according to address. Call 267-4378 for more information.
Spring Weather Awareness - Are You Prepared? Spring severe weather season is upon us and even if it doesn’t feel like spring yet, now is the time to make sure you are prepared. Do you know the difference between Watch and Warning? A Watch is meant to be your early alert that tornadoes or severe thunderstorms are possible. During a watch, it’s really your time to make sure you’re prepared and keeping a close eye on the conditions, by watching weather updates on the news. A Warning means you need to act quickly. Severe storms are already happening and it’s time to get to shelter. Keri Korthals, Director of Emergency Management for Butler County states, “When our severe weather fires up, a lot of times it’s a pretty rapid sequence. The Watch comes and then the weather
explodes and then the Warning comes and they get hit with a lot of information all at once.” That’s why it’s so important to make sure your family knows what to do for a Watch or a Warning, before they’re issued. So the next question is, what do Kansans do when there’s a Warning? When a Warning is issued, it’s time to get shelter, don’t wait. The final question - Are you prepared? Do you have a storm safetykit ready to go? Hopefully there are now safety kits where there weren’t before. Remember, it’s not enough to know what you’re supposed to do in severe weather, you have to be prepared and ready to act. Now is the time to sit down with your family and make sure you know what to do. (information from KSN.com)

Linwood Senior Center “The April winds are magical, And thrill our tuneful frames; The garden-walks are
passional, To bachelors and to dames” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson~ Joke (it’s a moaner): “Why are people so tired on April 1st?” --
“Because they just finished a 31-day March.” Happy April,
Spring and rain is in the air! This is the month that can be inspiring, the trees getting their leaves, flowers that are blooming, and new life! What a joyous time. If you have not noticed, we have been getting a little joyful “face lift” at Linwood. We are trying to do some painting, and bringing in some new furniture, and wall hangings to give us a “fresh look”. Freshing up is so very important to keeping our warm and welcoming environment. And we want to thank those who have helped by “elbow-grease” and by donating items and purchasing from our gift shop. These help us toget the updates we need. We also have been blessed to have many new membershere at Linwood, and we certainly want to welcome you to join us in our funadventures and activities, because Linwood is all about our customer’s needs!
Check out your newsletter, we will be getting together to do a sing-a-long, so if you want to come and bring your instruments and join us, we would love it. Also, we want you to come down and work an Easter puzzle with us, and if you finish you can get a fun treat. We will be having an EGG-STRAVAGANZA where we will be decorating eggs and maybe even an Easter Egg Hunt! Our favorite Jim Boots will be here to take us armchair travelling to Australlia and New Zealand, so join us as we travel along, singing our song, day by day!
Blessings, Cherise & Co~

Hello Everyone...Happy April! On the Random Acts of Kindness calendar for this month we focus on inclusiveness (including others). I have a question for you, when you attend any one of our 4 Senior Centers (Downtown, Linwood, Orchard Park, and Northeast) do you feel included in like a family? Or would you say the opposite? Hopefully, you answered yes, you feel like family…if that is not the case maybe you can suggest some areas that we may have missed. With all the many activities and programs that we offer something could have slipped by us. As humans we have a need to belong, feel included, supported, and valued by others socially. Speaking for myself, it is never my intent to make anyone feel less than. Here are some areas that The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation suggest we should challenge ourselves for April:
• Introduce yourself to someone new today and ask them about something theyenjoy doing.• Take time to listen to someone’s ideas.• When others are gossiping, be the one to chime in with something nice.• Stand up for someone or something you believe in.• Have a meal with someone new.• Remember that no one is perfect & we all make mistakes.

Orchard Park Senior CenterGreetings Everyone!!!Are you stressed out? Unable to relax? Feeling gloomy? Well, you might consider going for a long walk, or engaging in a game of pickleball to work out those frustrations. Or, if you want more immediate results, you can just laugh it off. April is National Humor Month, so this is the perfect time to add a little humor into your daily routine. Founded in 1976 by author and humorist Larry Wilde, the original idea was to heighten public awareness of the therapeutic and restorative values of joy and laughter. After all, many studies have shown that laughter can actually improve our health. And laughter is fun! After all, you can’t feel sad or angry when you’re laughing, right? The fact is that laughter itself changes us physiologically. Like exercise or waving your arms around, it boosts the heart rate and increases blood flow, so we breathe faster and more oxygen is delivered to the body’s tissues. Our facial muscles stretch and we actually burn calories when we’re laughing. In fact, the mere act of smiling can alter your mood almost immediately. Of course, there are always skeptics out there, like that cranky person across the way or that grumpy relative you try to avoid at the holidays. But here are a few fun facts that you might want to mention to them:
• Laughter reduces stress – When stressed, we produce a hormone called cortisol. Laughter can significantly reduce cortisol levels. • Laughter Strengthens the Immune System – A hearty laugh decreases stress hormones and increases (continued on page 19)

Married four times: The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation.. “He’s a funeral director,” she answered. “Interesting,” the newsman thought... He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20’s, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40’s, and a preacher when in her 60’s, and now - in her 80’s - a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.(Wait for it...)- She smiled and explained, “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”(Oh, just hush-up now and send this one on to somebody who needs a laugh.) ha!
Last year, I replaced all the windows in my house with those expensive
double pane energy efficient kind. But this week, I got a call from the
contractor complaining that his work had been completed a whole year and I had yet to pay for them. Boy, oh boy, did we go around! Just because I’m blonde doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I proceeded to tell him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told
me last year. He said that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves.
There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up, and he hasn’t called back. Guess he was embarrassed.

Director’s Notes (Continued)production of T-cells, immune proteins and infection-fighting antibodies• Laughter Helps the Heart – When we laugh we increase blood flow and the function of blood vessels, which can help prevent cardiovascular problems• Laughter Relaxes the Whole Body – One good belly laugh can relieve physical tension and relax your muscles for up to 45 minutes.• Laughter Helps You Recharge – By reducing stress levels and increasing your energy, laughter can help you focus and achieve more.
So, not only is a great giggle a lot of fun, it’s good for you! And like yawning, laughter can also be contagious. So by opening yourself up to more humor in your daily life, you may also have a positive effect on those around you. And the great thing about humor is that there is a bottomless supply out there. You don’t need to sign up for anything. It doesn’t cost a thing. It’s fat-free and you can have as much of it as you like.Information taken from www.huffingtonpost.com So in celebration of National Humor Month, let’s get the giggles started!! Look for some jokes in this newsletter edition to help you along the way. Diane Nutt, Center Director
A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.
While on the operating table, she had a near death experience.
Seeing God, she asked, “Is my time up?” God said, “No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live.” Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction and tummy tuck. Since she
had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well look even nicer.
After her last operation, she was released from the hospital. While
crossing the street on her way home, she was hit and killed by an ambulance.
Arriving in front of God, she demanded, “I thought you said I had another 40 plus years? Why didn’t you pull me out of the
path of the ambulance!?”
God replied, “My child, I am sorry, I didn’t even recognize you!

Kindness Is Contagious Kindness is a behavior marked by ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and a concern for others. It is known as a virtue, and is recognized as a value in many cultures and religions (Wikipedia). Our senior centers are very grateful for the kindness shown to them by our members, volunteers and community. The giving spirit shown by so many helps to make the centers succeed in their abilities to provide activities, learning opportunities, and a comfortable environment. The centers receive so many donations during the year, and we hope we are able to acknowledge each person has they have given to us. These donations come in many forms; monetary, products, food, time, and talents. We are forever indebted to all those that spread their kindness to us and others in the
center. To those that sponsor events, teach classes, bring in great food, donate a few dollars, and spend that few minutes to stop and share with each other. Time spent together is a gift we can always treasure. Look around you and see what a difference you are making in your center, in your community, in your family. Even the smallest contributions can make the largest impact not only on your life but on someone else’s as well. On behalf of our four senior centers; Downtown, Linwood, Northeast, and Orchard Park. We thank you for your kindness!
