2020 NCEA GENERAL INFORMATION This is New Zealand’s national qualification. Subjects are divided into a number of Achievement
Standards
NCEA is offered at three years:
Year 11 – NCEA Level 1
Year 12 – NCEA Level 2
Year 13 – NCEA Level 3 and Level 4 Scholarship

From 2019 onwards, there is no charge for sitting NCEA at any level.
Notes:
Each subject is divided into a number of Standards worth varying number of credits.
There are between 4 to 9 Standards in each subject.
Each Standard is worth 2-9 credits. The total credits per subject is usually around 18 – 24.
YEAR 11 – NCEA LEVEL 1
At St Peter’s College students must take English, Mathematics, Science and Theology &
Philosophy. Students then choose to take THREE other subjects.
YEAR 12 – NCEA LEVEL 2
At St Peter’s College students must take English, Mathematics, Theology & Philosophy plus
THREE further NCEA Level 2 Subjects
YEAR 13 – NCEA LEVEL 3
At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy plus FIVE further NCEA
Level 3 Subjects
Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L1 Maths to satisfy the numeracy requirement for
Level 1 and University Entrance
Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L2 English (5 Reading/5 Writing) to satisfy the
literacy requirement for University Entrance. This can also be gained through L2 Te Reo Māori.
From 2019 onwards, there is no charge for sitting NCEA at any level.

Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits including 10 in Maths (numeracy) and 10
in English/Te Reo (Literacy)
NCEA LEVEL 2
Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 1 and at least 60
from Level 2 or above
NCEA LEVEL 3
Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 2 and at least 60
from Level 3
ENDORSEMENTS
At each Level, students require 50 Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with
Excellence, and 50 Merit or Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with Merit or
Excellence.
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE
You will be qualified for entrance to New Zealand Universities if you have obtained:
1. A FULL PASS AT NCEA LEVEL 3
2. APPROVED SUBJECTS – 14 credits in each of three approved subjects at Level 3.
3. LITERACY – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
a. 5 credits in reading
b. 5 credits in writing
4. NUMERACY -10 credits at Level 1 or above in Mathematics
NOTE: The University of Auckland have increased their own literacy requirements. To
enter any university course at Auckland, students need to have 17 credits at NCEA English
Level 2 or 3.

Passing NCEA Level 1 involves gaining a minimum of 80 credits.
Across the seven subjects in Year 11, St Peter’s offers students the chance to obtain roughly 130 credits.
Passing NCEA Level 2 involves gaining 60 credits at Level 2 or above PLUS 20 credits from any
level.
Level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements must also be met
Across the six subjects at Level 2, St Peter’s offers students the chance to
obtain roughly 120 credits.
Passing NCEA Level 3 involves gaining 60 credits at Level 3 PLUS 20 credits from Level 2 or above.

NCEA LEVELS are a mix of Internal Achievement Standards which are taken during school time and External Achievement Standards which are taken in the exam season at the end of the academic year. The object for every student should be to pass the standards at as high a level as possible, aiming for Merit and Excellence as their level of attainment

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to introduce students to the wide ranges of places where they interact with
the English language on a daily basis. Students will study a variety of texts, both written and
visual, and will begin to understand how writers and directors use verbal and visual language for
an intended purpose.
This course will challenge students to reflect on how language is used to communicate ideas and
will also cultivate their ability to communicate information in a developed manner. Students will
encounter both fiction and non-fiction and will be required to communicate using a range of
written forms, including essays, creative writing and a research report.

Level 1 NCEA Science is a course, which covers internally, and externally assessed standards from
the Science domain. Three internally assessed standards and four externally assessed standards,
make up this course. External standards are theory based.
There is one each for Chemistry and Biology and two for Physics. The internal standards are
investigations in Chemistry and Biology.
To advance in Chemistry and Biology an external pass is required. To advance in Physics a pass in
two external standards and the Algebraic procedures is required.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
At Level 1, the Theology & Philosophy Faculty offers 4 achievement standards, each worth 6
credits, each assessed internally.
Year 11 NCEA begins with a study of the Ethics of War within the larger context of the Consistent
Ethic of Life. Students next look at all 4 Gospels and their place in the New Testament Canon, with
special emphasis on the historical-critical method of interpretation.
In the third standard the class considers the Trinity especially as articulated by the Nicene Creed
of 325 AD. Finally, having completed a broad Church History course in Year 10, students in year
11 now focus more in depth on three stages of the Reformation: The Early Reformation, the
English Reformation and the Catholic Counter Reformation.

Accounting is the language of business. It provides students with the tools to make real life
financial decisions in a constantly changing world. This Level 1 Accounting course enables
students to develop the knowledge and skills to manage the financial affairs of individuals,
communities, and businesses in a variety of modern economic and business contexts while acting
with integrity.
Students will also make use of appropriate communication tools and skills to process, report, and
interpret financial information for individuals, communities, and businesses. No prior Accounting
knowledge is required to enter this course, although completion of Year 10 Business Studies will
provide a good basis of knowledge for this course. The Level 1 Accounting course consists of the

This is an introductory course to Design and Photography. Students will develop their skills in

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will study how producers and consumers interact through the market. The three major
areas of study are: producers’ decisions, consumers’ decisions and the market. These areas will
cover demand, supply, market equilibrium and market disequilibrium.
Students will develop their learning through investigation, discussion, experimentation and the
study of economic literature. No prior economic knowledge is required to enter this course,
although completion of Year 10 Business Studies will provide a good basis of knowledge for this

Geography is the study of the environment as the home of people. It seeks to interpret the world
and how it changes over time – past, present, and future. It explores the relationships and
connections between people and both natural and cultural environments. Geography investigates
the ways in which features are arranged on the earth’s surface.
It describes and explains the patterns and processes that create them. Students learn to think
spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies to obtain, present and analyse
information. Topics studied include population, development and geographic skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course serves as a useful introduction to the demands of senior history for NCEA students.
There is a strong emphasis on New Zealand history and how significant events have affected New
Zealanders. The new Level 1 Standards allow for richer learning experiences of key events in
history which lead towards a better understanding of New Zealand identity and how events have
had an impact on our society.
The internal Achievement Standards allow students to conduct their own research into events
which impacted on New Zealand history and an investigation of different peoples’ perspectives in
relation to an event. The external Achievement Standards focus on resource interpretation,
extended writing and an investigation of a significant New Zealand event.

L1 Chinese is for students who have completed the Year 10 Chinese course. This course focuses
on developing the basic spoken and written language skills essential for communication in
everyday situations. Linguistic studies are consolidated by background work on life in China, so
that the language is learnt in its appropriate cultural context.
The assessments consist of 2 internals (a writing portfolio and a spoken presentation), and 2
externals (a reading exam and a listening exam).

exam and a listening exam. Keen and able students may also do a further 5 credits for a
speaking interaction portfolio.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This level study is designed to continue the work done with those students who have already
studied Te Reo Māori in year 10. As an extension it is expected that the students have some prior
knowledge of Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
The focus of the course will be on achieving NCEA Level 1 internal standards – this will involve
practicing with a range of familiar topics.
The standards available are Whakarongo (Listening comprehension), Kōrero (Oral assessment),
and Waihanga (Writing portfolio) as well as one exam standard: Pānui i te reo o tōna ao (Reading
comprehension)

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course combines practical elements with theory, composition and the study of set works.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of Year 10 Design and Visual communication to
be completed with a minimum of an “At Curriculum Level” Grade or higher in each unit of work.
Some Junior Hard Materials Technology will be also be considered for entry. Other entry at HOF’s
discretion. An artistic flair and drawing ability is highly recommended for this course.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
DVC at Level 1 gives students the opportunity to build up sketching and rendering skills so that
they can visually explain their ideas for a spatial design.
Students are to produce a design portfolio which will include:
• 2D and 3D freehand sketches that communicate design ideas
• Instrumental drawings to communicate design ideas
• Rendering techniques to communicate the form of design ideas
Students will complete the above by researching an influential designer and their design context
which will then inform the development of their design ideas.
Please note: The design portfolio encompasses all available credits (including external credits).
There are no exams for this subject. Students require their own personal laptop for this course.
Level 1: Hard Materials (Furniture)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: An interest in the trades as a career pathway. Junior Hard Materials is
also recommended but entry can be applied for and discussed with the HOF Mrs Homburg.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is made up of practical and theory aspects of furniture manufacture.
The practical outcomes produced by the students mesh with the theory content of the course at all
times. The student outcomes are constructed in such a way as to give them the maximum number
of experiences of component manufacture and joining methods.
Students produce their own working drawings of their article of furniture and work directly from
them. Student centred learning techniques are used with Teacher consultation available at all
times.

• Making a cupboard
• Joints
• Workshop processes

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is made up of practical and theory aspects of Commercial Cookery and Hospitality
Operations. The courses is Unit Standards based and covers:
• Frying and Grilling; Commercial Cutlery & Crockery
• Preparing and presenting Meat in the Hospitality Industry
• Preparing and presenting Egg and Cheese Dishes in the Hospitality Industry
• Preparing and presenting Fruit and Vegetable Dishes in the Hospitality Industry
• Terminology used in the Hospitality Industry, Knife care, use, storage and carrying
The course is both theory and practical-based.
