Why is it important
• First time UN attention for chronic diseases• Future priorities (post MDG?)• Majority of people worldwide now die from
NCD• Growing cost is a becoming a burden to health
systems and government budgets• Shift in focus from infectious to chronic
diseases

• Global data, including many data form lower and
middle income countries (LAMIC)
• Global cost higher than any other disease
• Relationship dementia with dependency and need
for care (10/66)
• Relationship between dementia and poverty: loss of
jobs, especially in LAMIC (ADI-report 2009 - 56)
What ADI can add (2)
• In papers so far no refer to AGEING as the main driver of NCDs
• Comorbidity• Shared risk factors with other diseases:
• Lack of physical exercise• High blood pressure• Smoking• Diet• Etc
Preferred outcome of the summit
• Recommendations towards reducing risk factors
• Better disease management improves quality of life and reduces risk factors
• Importance of strengthen primary health care systems
• Recognition of dependency and needs for care• Recognition of caregivers and need for
caregiver support
