Ash Wednesday Services Wednesday, March 5
Ash Wednesday is an ancient tradition of the church as we enterinto the holy season of Lent. We spend 40 days preparingourselves for Easter through acts of self-denial, service, andgiving. Ash Wednesday is the day we enter this holy season. Weremind ourselves of our mortality and our utter dependence onGod, and through our repentance we remember also thegracious gift of forgiveness and reconciliation that God offers.Dont miss this holy opportunity to worship as Lent begins.
We provide three worship services on Ash Wednesday. All include Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes:
Noon Spoken Service5:30 p.m. Childrens Service7:00 p.m. Choral Service
All services include Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes.
Shrove Tuesday / Mardi Gras Celebration!
On Tuesday, March 4, at 6:00 p.m., enjoyour last hurrah before Lent begins! The
Youth Group and Mens Group joinforces to provide our traditional Shrove
Tuesday Pancake Supper, with pancakes, sausage, and kings cake! There will be

From the Book of Common Prayer service for Ash Wednesday:
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent,by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and byreading and meditating on Gods holy Word.
Lent, I think, is my favorite season of the church year. Its solemnity and reverence fill mewith awe at Gods presence with us and Gods gracious gift of forgiveness. And each year, like many of you, I adopt some discipline that allows me to remember that this time isdevoted to God. The traditional disciplines of the church are self-examination andrepentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial, and reading and meditating on the scriptures.
This year, I would like to invite you all to join me in a special set of disciplines, suggested by The Restoration Project, anEpiscopal group that wishes to restore the centrality of our spiritual lives. Their Lenten challenge to us is:
20 + 1 + 4
That is:
Pray for 20 minutes a day. Worship for 1 hour a week. Serve others for 4 hours a month.
Why do these numbers make a difference? Studies show that people who pray for 20 minutes a day report being stronger, more satisfied, and more joy-filled than those who pray less or not at all. Worshipping one hour a week is how we allowGod to nourish us spiritually. Serving others is how we put our faith into action, reminding ourselves that loving others issomething we do not just with our hearts, but with our hands.
How to go about doing this? Worshipping one hour a week is simple Nativitys Sunday worship services offer ampleopportunities.
Praying 20 minutes a day is more difficult, unless you have a way to focus your prayer. Here is what I recommend.Follow the daily prayer discipline in the Book of Common Prayer. You can pray it alone or with another person, or agroup. The simplest way to do this is online. Here are some sources:
My favorite online source is www.missionstclare.com(click on Morning and Evening Prayer, then on Rite IICalendar, then on todays date (either the sunshine or the moon, depending on the time of day).
You can also find a version at www.dailyoffice.orgA shorter version is found at www.prayer.forwardmovement.org/daily_prayer_anytime.php.
Serving four hours a week can be a challenge. Here are some options:
Join the group of Nativity parishioners who serve at our sister church, Iglesia Santa Maria, by giving away food to peoplein need, the third and fifth Saturday morning of each month. For more information, please contact Don Balint at
For April, join Nativity parishioners in building a house for Habitat for Humanity. Please see the information on page____.
Search out a service opportunity within Nativity (help with childrens programs, serve in the kitchen, etc.), or at yourplace of work, or in your community. What matters is that you are serving others!
I will commit to doing the 20 + 1 + 4 challenge alongside you! Together, we will grow in faith and prepare for the LordsResurrection Day on Easter, April 20!
In Christ,Susan

Page 4 Waynes WorldOne of the factors that went into me
progressing past my Baccalaureate
degree to a Master of Divinity and
eventually a Ph.D. was a personal
dissatisfaction with the quality of theChristian teaching in my world.
Said another way, maybe even
arrogantly, I was sure I could do it
better. Now 24 years after receiving my last diploma I
trust God is using my, shall we say, personal fortitude,
to advance His Kingdom in the world. I can name only
a handful of teachers in the Christian tent that truly
impact my life and continue to challenge me and help
me grow in my spiritual life. At the top of the list is Fr.
Richard Rohr. Fr. Rohr is a Franciscan priest and his
writings embody the wisdom of what it looks like to
live a life of Christian transformation. He is the
founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation
(CAC) in Albuquerque, NM and considers the
proclamation of the gospel to be his primary calling.
Fr. Rohr will be in Paradise Valley at Episcopal Christ
Church of the Ascension, 4015 E Lincoln Drive on
March 7 at 7:00 p.m. The topic for his lecture is "The
Francis Factor" which explores the themes of St.
Francis' spirituality and mysticism. I am going and I
invite you to join me there. I am declaring a meet-up
for this Friday night event. You can find out more
about Fr. Rohr and his teachings from the CAC webs
cac.org. Do let me know if you plan to attend so I caknow to look for you. There will be an informal

Our February 23rd violin and
piano concert was a big success!
We had a nice mixed group of
Nativity people and music lovers
who came just to hear the duo.
Levon Zarasian and PeterGharibian gave a splendid
performance, and people left our
church thrilled with the music as
well as the fantastic venue we have. I heard many
comments on how wonderful the acoustics of our
church is, and the musicians themselves expressed
that too. With our new grand piano that we all
worked so hard to get, we can host much more events
of this class, and bring more people in! As David
Bolger said during the opening speech - musictransforms people lives, and I am excited that
Nativity is becoming more and more the music center
to accommodate these transformations. I received a
wonderful letter from one of the musicians saying:
"Your church is really a warm and welcoming place I
know ... we really enjoyed playing for such nice
people. Your church members were very warm, very
gracious and very welcoming. We felt at home."
The next concert in the series is on Sunday, March 23at 4 pm. We are proud to host the final voice recital
by ASU doctoral student, baritone Christopher
Hutton. He will be joined by a string quartet in the
performance of 18th century Italian music and
Samuel Barber's "Dover Beach". Wonderful music
selection, professional musicians in our perfect-for-
classical-music venue! You can't miss that!
The Adult Choir has been working hard on new
challenging and beautiful music. Last month you hada chance to hear a mix of American, British and
French music: a rendition of Canticle 17, Nunc
dimittis or "The Song of Simeon" by K. Nichols; G.
Martin's "Lord, Lead Me, Lord"; the meditative "Ubi
Caritas" by Maurice Durufle; and William Boyce's
"Teach me, O Lord, the Way of Thy Statutes" based
on Psalm 119. This month we will start with Sunday
School Children Choir performing "This Little Light
of Mine" and the Adult Choir taking you for a gospel
trip in "Let everything that hath breath" by J.L.
Ames. Accompanied by Noah Simpson on trumpet
and Alastair Longley-Cook on guitar, it should make
a perfect ending of the Epiphany season.
Ash Wednesday on March 5th will help you move
spiritually toward Lent - the choir will put you into
the meditative mood with wonderful traditional
hymns from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as
music from the Taize community. During five
Sundays of Lent this year we will bring more
prayerful music: you will hear "Agnus Dei" from
Camille Saint-Sans' "Requiem", John Stainer's "God
so loved the world", Johann S. Bach's Aria "ErbarmeDich" from the famous St. Matthew Passion, and also
our Children Choir singing "Do You Know Your
Shepherd's Voice?".
We are thrilled to welcome new members in our
choir! Sopranos Destiny and Jeremy Spencer-
Treinen, Jan Parisian, and an alto Cynthia Cohen. We
are still searching for more members, so if you'd like
to join us, please talk to me after the service, or send
me an email at [email protected]

Hello Nativity Families!I would like to start off by thanking all of the families and the wonderful
youth for helping make the Have A Heart Soup lunch such a wonderful success! We
were able to raise a great amount of money for our Youth Mission Trip this summer!
Thank you to everyone that participated in this event.
I would like to let everyone know that February 23rd was my last day. At this point in our lives, my
husband and I need to make sure we are putting our family needs first. This has been a very difficult
decision to make because I love all of the youth and their families so very much. I am so grateful to all
of the youth that made my experience at Nativity so wonderful. I will cherish all of the memories I
have made here. We had such a wonderful time on Mission Trip, Confirmation class, Animal Blessing
service, Booing, Zoo Lights, Cookie Bake off, Christmas party, and Super Bowl Party. I want all of you
to know how much I love and appreciate each of these youth and all of their huge hearts, great
personalities, and a desire to deepen their faith. I will miss spending time with all of these students on
a regular basis, because they make life such an adventure!
I will continue to pray for these students and this ministry. It is such an important age and I am sad to
leave them. I hope and pray that Nativity continues to thrive and that God will continue to use all of
you in Mighty ways. I hope to keep in touch with you and have included my personal e-mail addressin case you ever want or need to contact me.
Blessings to all of my Nativity family,
Julie Bogle

Nativitys Daily Devotional
Dear Nativity Youth and Parents,
I know you have already received the news that Julie Bogle will be leaving Nativity, and Feb. 23 was her last day withus. We are sorry to see her go,but she needs to do what is right for herself and her family.
A couple of you have asked me about our plans for the future. Youth group will continue, and we will havean announcement for you soon! I want to assure you that youth ministries remain every bit as high a priority as ever atNativity, and that we will make sure this ministry continues. You, the youth, are very important to us and to ourchurch, and we will support you through this transition.
I would like to invite youth and parents to a special meeting on Sunday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m.,duringthe regular youth group time. It will be a potluck supper, so please email Pastor Susan [email protected] if you can bring a main dish, side dish, salad, or dessert. I will be talking with parents, andShelley Byrnes will be talking with youth, about the plans we are making and about how you would like to see theyouth group go forward. We hope to have some concrete ideas to share with you then, and we also want to hear yourthoughts.
In the meantime, we want to assure you that plans are moving forward for the mission trip to San
Diego this summer. We will give you an update at the student-parent meeting!
I want to thank you all for your support of youth ministries. Students: thank you for being yourselves. You arewonderful kids, and we are glad you are a part of Nativity. Parents: thank you for your support of your kids and forNativity in this transition time.

Daily Devotional
Prayer is our connection with God, the discipline that helps oursouls stay aligned with Gods will. Daily prayer is the most basic of Christian disciplines,
helping us remember that God is present in all the joyous, sorrowful, mundane, and
ordinary parts of our lives. By maintaining a steady diet of daily prayer, we learn to open our
hearts and minds to Gods will, and grow to recognize Gods voice as it speaks in our hearts.
Most of us, however, stay so busy so much of the time that it is hard to make time for daily prayer, or
even when we make time for it, it is hard to keep our minds focused. One way to approach this problem is to
begin with daily devotions. This collection of daily devotions, spiritual exercises, and prayers was created by a
group of people from Episcopal Church of the Nativity, Scottsdale. These are prayerful people who have foundways to share the prayers of their hearts with you.
I hope that as you begin to use this book, you will find your mind enlightened and your heart opened to the
presence of the living God, for whom our souls are athirst.
Many thanks to Lani Sambach, the editor of this collection.
In Christ,
The Rev. Susan Brown Snook
