List of Activities 2017-18:
National Science Day
The faculty of Physical and Life Sciences, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of
Science, Humanities and Commerce, celebrated National Science Day on
27th February, 2018. The theme of this intercollegiate event was “Scientific
issues for the development of the Nation”. The Science Day began with an
inaugural session presided over by Prof. Y Ashok, Principal, BVC, Vice
Chairman, Air Comdr. (Retd) J. L. N. Sastry, VSM, faculty members and
students of Physical and Life Sciences. Prof. Y Ashok appreciated the efforts
of the various Departments of Sciences for their team work. Vice Chairman,
Air Comdr. (Retd) J. L. N. Sastry, VSM, gave his blessings and discussed the
importance of science in our daily life.The keynote speaker and the Chief
Guest for the inaugural, Smt. G. Krishnaveni, Member Secretary (FAC),
TSCOST, gave an insight into the objective of TSCOST which was
propagating science in educational institutions at Mandal, District, State and
National level. She emphasized the importance of living with science rather
than celebrating science. The Guest of Honour Brig. P. Ganesham, VSM
(Retd.), Founder President, Palle Srujana, while addressing the audience
urged the need of using Gandhian Technology based on MLM- more from
less for many, with a focus on grassroot innovations. The highlight of the
event was a documentary on “Role of Science & Technology in developing 70
years of Independent India”. Events conducted during the Science fair were
live experiments, poster presentations, display of models and an essay
competition in English. There was an enthusiastic response from students of
colleges like St. Pious X Degree & P.G College for Women, Nacharam;
University College for Women, Koti, St. Francis College for Women,
Begumpet; Kasturba Gandhi Degree & P.G College for Women, Marredpally;
Ideal Degree College for Women, Dilsukhnagar to name a few. A total of 390
students registered for various events in the Science fair, of which 68 were
from other colleges and 322 were in- house participants. The number of
students who participated in Essay writing was 53 and some of the current
issues dealt with were Plastic roads, electricity theft, biodegradable
packaging, printing organs for transplantation, air pollution, food fortification
to combat malnutrition, detecting drunk people, microplastics, and solid
waste management. 192 posters were presented by the students of which
107 were from life sciences, 64 from physical sciences and 21 were from
computer sciences. A total of 136 models were displayed for the event
including 90 live demonstrations. The National Science Day celebration was
a grand success.
GTVM
The department organized the annual lecture series “Gyan Tarangini
Vyakhyan mala 2018” on 23rd February, 2018.Dr. Ch. Sasikala , Professor,
Center for Environment, Institute of Science & Technology, JNTU, Hyderabad
was the chief guest for event. There was a lecture by Dr. Kavitha Reddy,
Director, Sreya Nutrition, Director - Nutrition Communications, NutriTech
Consulting Service Pvt. Ltd, Hyderabad. There were Paper and Poster
Presentations for students. Judges for these events were Dr. Manjula
B.,Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biochemistry, Osmania University,
Hyderabad., Dr. Sandeepta B,Assistant Professor, Dept. of Microbiology,
Osmania University, Hyderabad., Dr. B. Vijaya Lakshmi, Assistant Professor,
Dept. of Clinical Biochemistry, Institute of Genetics and Hospital for Genetic
Diseases, Osmania University, Hyderabad., Dr. Sunitha, HOD, Clinical
Geneticist and Fetal Medicine spl. Institute of Genetics and Hospital for
Genetic Diseases, Osmania University, Hyderabad.
Outreach Program
Bhavan’s Vivekanada college ,Department of Microbiology On Saturday
organized an event “Meet the Scientists” for science teachers and students
at +2, UG and PG levels on , 27th January 2018. This event was a part of
the outreach program organized by the International Congress on Cell
Biology 2018,Hyderabad. This was the first-ever joint meeting of FCB
(International Federation for Cell Biology), APOCB (Asian Pacific
Organization for Cell Biology), and the Indian Society of Cell Biology (ISCB).
The ICCB was organized by Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology,
(CCMB). Principal Prof.Y .Ashok, appreciated the initiative for conducting an
outreach program at Bhavan’s Vivekanada college and applauded the
scientists for sharing their knowledge . There was an overwhelming
response of 100 participants that included teachers and students of various
institutions in twin cities. Teachers and students had a chance to interact
with two eminent scientists, Prof. Margarete Heck and Dr. Mukund Thattai,
who shared their personal journeys in Biology and spread the excitement of
science. The teachers and students actively interacted with speakers
addressing issues related to biology and its prospects.
Three Day - RBPT WorkshopJanuary 17-19 , 2018
A 3-day Regional RBPT (Research-Based Pedagogical Tools) workshop for
UG and PG Science College Teachers of Telangana and surrounding areas
was inaugurated on 17th January , 2018 at Bhavan’s Vivekananda College,
Sainikpuri. The workshop was co-hosted by COESME (Center of Excellence
for Science and Mathematics Education) of Indian Institute of Science
Education and Research (IISER) Pune and Bhavan’s Vivekananda College.
The workshop is funded by MHRD and DST (Department of Science and
Technology), Government of India. The Newton Bhabha Fund of British
Council is a knowledge partner of the workshop. Around 70 teachers of
Chemistry, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Physics registered for the
workshop. The chief guest, Air Commander (Retd). J L N Sastry, Vice-
Chairman, BVB, and the Principal, Prof. Y. Ashok inaugurated the workshop.
In their message to the participants, they advised the participants to use
their skills to train and inspire the students to become resourceful scientists
capable of solving practical problems. Ms. Prachi Pasalkar, representative of
IISER, explained that this was the 12th Regional Workshop of this series.
The workshop has five subject facilitators who have been trained by experts
from the Sheffield Hallam University ,UK. They will conduct hands-on
activities to impart skills of developing Research-Based lesson plans for
teaching the students. This novel method of teaching will benefit our
students by inculcating logical thinking and problem-solving.
Guest Lecture
A guest lecture was organized by the department on 22 -12-2017 . The
guest speaker Shri. Anil Kumar Kapu, Director, Antel Enterprises (Pvt.
Ltd.),Antel Molecular Diagnostics spoke on “My Journey in
Bioinformatics and Biotechnology.” He briefed his experiences in the
field of bioinformatics and his journey in establishing the enterprise.
As part of his talk he motivated students to take up careers related to
bioinformatics and also gave details about the oppurtunities in this field.
IPR and Patenting Workshop
Department of Microbiology had organized a two day workshop on IPR and
Patenting for M.sc Microbiology final year students on 9th& 10th November,
2017 in collaboration with Clinnovo Research labs.
On 9thNovember, Dr.Surendranath Reddy CEO, Clinnovo research labs and
Dr.A.R. Poongothai, Resourceperson, Mrs.Veena and Mrs.Sandeepthi
attended the inaugural session. Thiswas followed by introduction session to
IPR and Patenting. Afternoon session was on Process of patenting. This was
followed by lecture on role of clinical data management &pharmacovigilance
byMrs .Veena from Clinnovo Research labs.
On 10th November, Morning session started on procedures involved in filing
patent at National and International level. Session also had lecture on
Patent laws, Acts and search tools WIPO &EPO. Dr.A.R. Poongothaibreified
on opportunities for a Patent Officer. Session concluded with lecture on
statistical analysis tool – SAS.
Before concluding the workshop, an evaluator test was conducted and a
surprise prize was announced to the best performer.Distribution of
participation certificates was done by College Principal and CEO from Clinnovo
during valedictory session.
Diabetes Awareness Program
On the occasion of World Diabetes Day on 14thNovember 2017, NIMS,
Punjagutta organized a Diabetes Awareness Walk which has been coordinated
by Department of Microbiology, BVC .It was based on the international theme
for this year “Women and Diabetes: our right to a healthy future. Students of
B.Sc Microbiology actively participated in this awareness walk by
incorporating these messages into placards which they carried with them on
the walk.
The route of walk was from Punjagutta , NIMS to Banjara Hills, NIMS..
Regional Science congress 2017
IKP (Innovative Knowledge Park) Visit
Department of Microbiology organized an industrial visit to IKP (Innovative
Knowledge Park) at Genome Valley. B.Sc and M.Sc Microbiology students
were accompanied with the staff members for the visit on 16th September
2017 and 22nd August 2017 respectively. As part of the visit students were
given awareness on the support initiated at the IKP for Industrial start ups.
They were briefed on the facility for Incubator systems and the guidance for
funding for new ventures. Working and applications of the instruments like
ICPMS (Ion Coupled plasma Mass Spectrometry), Gas Chromatography, and
High Proficiency Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) were also demonstrated.
Agricultural Research Institute Visit
Students of Bsc 2nd year visited Agricultural Research Institute
(ARI),Prof.Jayashankar Telangana State Agri. University,Rajendranagar on
9th September 2017 as a part of their skill enhancement course in Food
Adulteration. Forty five enthusiastic students participated in this visit
organised by department of microbiology, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College,
Sainikpuri. During this visit, Dr.S.J.RAHMAN, Principal Scientist & Univ. Head
of Entomology interacted with students and explained them about various
aspects and advantages of biological control. He also encouraged students to
take up research programmes in the field of Agricultural microbiology.
Educational Trip to CFTRI & Pastuer Institute ,Coonor
Department of Microbiology had organized a three day educational tour i.e
from 5th to 7th September ,2017 for M.sc Final year students to visit
National Institutes like CFTRI at Mysore and Pasteur Institute Of India at
Coonor. Two faculty members accompanied 29 M.Sc students in this tour.
On 5th September, students visited Center for Food Technology Research
Institute (CFTRI), a premier National Institute in food technology where
they were briefed on CFTRI mission and programmes they undertake.
Research scholars at Plant cell Biotechnology (PCBT) department had
explained the culturing and commercial production of Spirulina (SCP)
product and research strategies to improvise and enhance its usage in
market. Students visited tissue culture labs where they were briefed with
coffee plant tissue culture and research work in enhancing the quality of
coffee. This lab also explained their research programmes on Food falvours
and natural colours. In Microbiology and Fermentation labs , Dr. Sarma had
summarized the department activities and their research interest. They are
mainly focusing on fermentations – preparations of Wines from local fruits,
Development of IDLY and DOSA Batter (already Commercialized), Banana
Juice ,Fruit clarification, Biogas production from Kitchen waste ,Squalene
production and another molecule for controlling hangover after consuming
alcohol. 6Th September students travelled from Mysore to Coonor via
Ooty with night halt at Ooty . On 7th of September morning , students visited
Pasteur Institute of INDIA at Coonor
where they visited Museum depicting the historical events of how the
institute was established and its
progress. Later they had seen animal models used for vaccine preparation.
This was followed by presentation by Senior Scientist on institute activities
and vaccine preparations specially focused on Rabies vaccine preparation.
He briefed out the facilities of the institute and also the training
programmes conducted by them.
Guest Lecture
Department of Microbiology organized a guest lecture for B.Sc and M.Sc
Microbiology students on 21.8.17. The guest speaker was Dr.B.Sandeepta,
Assistant Professor, from Department of Microbiology, Osmania University.
She spoke about the current research undertaken by her on “Analyzing
inflammatory response in Bacterial sepsis to predict mortality”. The lecture
given by her gave an insight to understand the procedures followed in
research and also motivated to have a successful career in science.
Outreach Program
An outreach program “Cancer Awareness” was organized by department of
Microbiology on 26th July 2017. It was conducted to create awareness on
different types of cancer for school students of Zilla parishad boys High
School, Malkajgiri. Students of MSc.Microbiology gave PowerPoint
presentations on different aspects of prevention of cancer and identification
of symptoms for early detection. There was an enthusiastic response from
school students as they felt that the information was very useful in
understanding the concept of cancer
