Like many adults and teenagers alike, I wanted straighterteeth and, back then, options were limited. I mean, there wasalways the option of cutting back my teeth for crowns orveneers even for many adults, this sounds like an extrememeasure and for a teenager, simply not an option. Plan B?Braces!
Train tracks were the bane of my teen days. I avoided smilingfor two years (well the ‘Jaws’ look certainly isn’t going to winany beauty contests!) – not because I was a ‘typical moodyteenager’, but because of those dreaded ‘train tracks’!
I didn’t enjoy wearing them, to say the least, and I certainlydidn’t miss them when they were gone! Whilst having themgave me the gift of a straight smile, the journey there was astruggle and I almost felt like I sacrificed 2 years of my life toget there.
15 years on and I'm a General and Cosmetic Dentist at ourNorth London dental practice in Southgate and I can safelysay, I am thankful the train track days are gone!
Today it’s all New Dentistry. I have so many brilliant treatmentoptions for my patients which means they don’t have toexperience the struggles of the old ‘train tracks’ that I andmany others had no option but to accept as our only hope.
Nowadays there are many products and services available forpatients to improve their smile but - in terms of straighteningteeth and orthodontics - nothing has revolutionised thedental industry like Invisalign, in my opinion.
We’ve been providing Invisalign for our patients as a clear,more harmonious alternative to braces for many years now.The feed back has been overwhelmingly positive, our patientslove the product, the way it looks and feels and most of allthe results have been amazing.
How it worksOrthodontics work by putting pressure on the teeth to movethem. If you, or anyone you know, have ever experienced thejoy of fixed or 'train track' braces, it’s likely you’ll have heard of‘having the wires tightened’. In effect, using a pair of pliers andtightening the wire to spread pressure over the brackets andonto the teeth, hence moving them. It is about as unpleasantand uncomfortable as it sounds. I can vouch for that!
Invisalign is completely different – it’s an American brandedproduct, created as a clear alternative to braces for adultswho want a straighter, more beautiful smile but without thedisadvantages and interference caused by fixed train trackbraces.
Invisalign works by creating a series of clear aligners; the firstone is created in the exact position your teeth are in now, andthe last one in the final position we want the teeth to end upin. There are aligners throughout the process, each one in aposition a step slightly closer to the end result we want toachieve. The patient is in control of changing their aligner,moving on to the next step every two weeks – and this is donein the comfort of the patient’s home. Each aligner placesgentle pressure on teeth, moving them into their newposition. It’s that simple!
3d Scanning and digital smile design technologyAs always, whenever there is something good in the market,there are lots of copy cats who try and reproduce the productin a similar but cheaper way. So, as expected, there are anumber of products and services on the market trying to copyInvisalign. But, what none of them have is the InvisalignClinCheck software – which is truly invaluable.
Invisalign ClinCheck software produces an exact 3D model ofyour teeth, showing you step-by-step (aligner-by-aligner) thejourney your teeth will take from a crooked to a beautifulsmile. The software also gives you the opportunity to reviewand decide the best result, before going ahead with thefabrication of your aligners – giving you the smile that youtruly want!
Patients are offered a free initial assessment, where we willassess each case on an individual basis, explain the Invisalign
system, software and treatment in more detail and decide ifInvisalign is a suitable option. If we are happy that Invisalignis the right option, we will assess which Invisalign productsare best suited for the patient’s needs. Each initialassessment is followed up with a written estimate fortreatment and details of available payment plan optionswhich includes, for the first time, interest free finance.
If at this stage you wish to go ahead with the treatment, thenext step is the Invisalign Records Appointment*. During thisvisit the patient will have a full dental examination (includingany necessary x-rays), facial and dental clinical photos.Moulds will be taken of your teeth and shipped to theInvisalign laboratory where your impressions will be scannedto create a 3D representation of your teeth. Personal serviceat its best!
From here, we’ll work alongside the Invisalign team to planyour treatment and create a digital smile design for you. Youwill receive a video of your tailored treatment plan via email,explaining and how long your treatment should take, howwe will move the teeth and, most excitingly, what they willlook like at the end of the process. This gives you the chanceto make (as many) changes to your treatment if you wish.
At this stage you're still not obligated to anything and, if youdecide Invisalign is not for you, you can walk away. However,if at this stage you realise how Invisalign could benefit youand you want to start treatment, once you have approvedyour treatment plan, it’s time to get started on your journeyto a beautiful smile.
*The cost of the Records Appointment is £350 - if patientschoose to go ahead with any of the Invisalign treatments;this cost will be deducted from the final quoted cost, as afirst instalment
