Course of the Competition
First Round
The first round takes place during May 2016 at various centres around the country. Three continuity adjudicators, Lize Coetzer, John Theodore and Denise Sutton adjudicate this round.

Should a candidate proceed to the second round, he/she will be contacted during May to make arrangements for participation.This round is to be held on 23 September 2016 at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow, Cape Town.

Third/Final Round
At the end of the second round five candidates are selected to compete in the third and final round on Saturday 24 September 2016. In the third round the finalists are accompanied by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of maestro Brandon Phillips.At this event the prizes will be officially awarded and the overall winner announced.

1. Age
Competitors must be between 18 and 35 years of age (as on 31 December 2016).
Standard: Minimum requirements: Unisa (Practical) Grade 6 or equivalent qualification at a similar institution, unless otherwise agreed with the project organiser.
2. Adjudication
Experts in Western Art music will assess the candidates during the three rounds.
If a candidate is or was as recently as two years ago a student of one of the adjudicators, the adjudicator in question might be asked to recuse him-/herself. This arrangement is applicable to all rounds.
All rounds are adjudicated separately. A candidate’s performance in the second round is not taken into consideration in the assessment of his/her performance in the third round.
Adjudicators base their decisions solely on the quality of the performance during the competition and not on any previous performances they may have heard, nor on the competitor’s reputation, his/her teacher’s reputation or on other matters.

The adjudicators’ decisions during the different rounds are final and endorsed by the ATKV. There will be no debate of any form on these decisions during any round or after the conclusion of the competition.
3. Criteria for adjudication
• Vocal quality and intonation• Breath control, articulation and general technical skill• Diction and correct pronunciation• Phrasing and authenticity of style• Variation of tone colour and dynamic levels• Insight in and interpretation of text• Posture, communication and presentation• Mastery of chosen repertoire
4. Programme content and time requirements for each round
No items of round one may be repeated in round two. All works performed in the second and third rounds must be
memorised. A participant may request permission to perform a contemporary
work with a score.

• A work or works preceding ±1750 (including Arie Antiche)• Any work(s) from the Romantic and/or Classical period• Any opera/operetta/oratorio aria• Any indigenious work in any of the official South African

Second Round Number of participants: 10 Duration: 15-20 minutes
A balanced programme of at least three style periods and inclusive of the following must be performed from memory:• Any South African indigenous composition• Two contrasting opera/operetta/oratorio arias in any language
Third Round (with orchestral accompaniment) Number of participants: 5 Duration: 10-12 minutes
• All works presented in this round must be selected from the prescribed repertoire list on page 24
• Both art songs and arias may be included in the same programme.
• All opera/operetta/oratorio arias must be sung in the original key and language. Art songs in this round may only be offered in the keys prescribed.
• If the orchestral material is not readily available, a candidate will be requested to change the programme submitted.
General
All time limits refer to real performance time; breaks between works, applause, entrance and exit times, are not taken into account. The adjudicators reserve the right during all the rounds to assess only that part of a candidate’s performance which is within the prescribed duration for the competition.
Candidates may perform works which were not originally composed for voice.
Except in the third round, the order in which works are performed in each round is left to the discretion of the candidate.
The programme selected should display the candidate’s vocal ability to his/her best advantage.

5. Memorisation
All works performed in the second and third rounds must be memorized. A participant may request to perform a contemporary work from a score.
6. Entry Fees
Entry fees of R100 per entry are payable to the ATKV. The entry fee must be deposited into the cheque account of the ATKV (refer to attached form). Proof of payment must accompany the entry form. The entry fee will not be refunded in case of cancellation, illness or absenteeism.
7. Unforeseen Circumstances
If a problem arises during any of the rounds (for instance coughing, a power failure or a memory lapse), the candidate may not leave the stage without the permission of the project organiser/adjudicators. The project organiser/adjudicators will consult with the candidate about a solution to the problem.
8. Travel and Accommodation
Candidates are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements and costs during the first round. ATKV will be responsible for travel and accommodation costs during the second and final round.
Please note that participants who need to travel from abroad are responsible for their own travelling costs to and from South Africa.
9. Accompanists and page turners
Candidates have to make arrangements for their own accompanists and page turners in the first round. The candidate’s teacher may not act as accompanist or page turner.
During the second round accompanists and page turners will be provided. Philippus Hugo and Victor Tichart will be the official accompanists for 2016. The ATKV reserves the right to allocate the candidates to the above mentioned accompanists.
The third round candidates will be accompanied by an orchestra.

10. Competition Facilities
Practice facilities will be provided during all the rounds, but the use of the piano in the competition hall during the first round is prohibited, unless otherwise arranged with the project organiser. However, during the second round and third round rehearsals will be scheduled in the competition venue.
11. Recordings
Candidates not residing in South Africa, or candidates who cannot attend the first round, may obtain permission from the project organiser to submit a DVD recording for assessment in the first round. The recording must be of a good quality, made during 2016, and the costs involved must be carried by the candidate. DVDs which were recorded abroad must be compatible with South African technology. This recording (together with the entry form as well
as three copies of the necessary sheet music) must reach the project organiser no later than Monday 25 April 2016.
Candidates must perform in person in the second and third rounds.
12. Overall winners may not enter this competition again. If, for any reason, the auditions for the first round cannot take place
at a scheduled centre, the ATKV undertakes to make an alternative arrangement and to carry all costs involved.
13. Candidates must conform to the project organiser’s arrangements for the competition, including media relations.
14. Sheet Music
Candidates must submit three bound copies of sheet music to all rounds. Original sheet music must be used as far as possible. The ATKV accepts no responsibility for copyright infringements if copies of sheet music are used.
15. Copyright
The ATKV reserves the right to make recordings of performances during the competition and to use those recordings without compensation to the artists. However, no recordings of any part of the competition may be made without the permission of the project organiser.

16. Winners and Prizes
The ATKV reserves the right to withhold a prize, depending on the quality of the performances.
Prizes may not be shared.
The ATKV and the overall winner will discuss possible media interviews and concert performances, depending on available opportunities and the financial implications thereof. Co-operation by the winner is expected in this regard.
Please note: It is mandatory that all semi finalists attend the final round.
17. Entries
The closing date for entries is Monday 25 April 2016.
All entry forms must be completed in full as incomplete information will result in the disqualification of the entry.
Candidates will receive a separate entry form from the project organiser for the second and third rounds. A specific deadline will be set for providing programme content and no programme changes will be allowed after that.
Upon signing of the first round entry form, a basic agreement is established between the ATKV and the candidate.. This agreement implies that the candidate will act strictly according to the rules of the competition and that the ATKV will present the competition strictly according to the rules.
Upon qualifying for the second round, the candidate has 24 hours to declare (in writing) to the ATKV what other obligations he/she has towards other competitions or organisations. After signing this declaration no candidate will be allowed to withdraw from the second or third round except in the case of sickness, emergency, or death of a loved one without paying a penalty fee of R3 000 to the ATKV.

18. Other matters
Any uncertainties about or omissions from the competition regulations will be settled by the project organiser and adjudicators.
Candidates participate in the competition at their own risk. The ATKV is in no way responsible for any loss, damage, injury or
illness suffered during or en route to or from the competition.
Non-compliance with or transgression of the rules of this competition will result in the disqualification of the entry.
The ATKV reserves the right to cancel or to stop the competition at any time if circumstances should necessitate it.
