Ken Lindblom and Leila Christenbury return with the second volume in the Continuing the Journey series, this time focusing on authentic writing instruction for middle and high school classrooms. The authors draw on what research has taught them about writing—concepts deeply rooted in personal identity and real-world experience—and why we must teach writing accurately, effectively, and fearlessly. As in the previous volume, the book includes visits to an ideal Teachers’ Lounge, featuring highly experienced colleagues and well-known researchers in English teaching. Topics covered include responding to student writing, handling the paper load, teaching grammar and usage in the context of writing, and seeking real-world feedback.

Voices from the Middle (Voices) is the peer-reviewed journal of the Middle Level Section of the National Council of Teachers of English Voices publishes original contributions by middle level teachers, students, teacher educators, and researchers in response to specific themes that focus on our discipline, our teaching, and our students Voices offers middle level teachers innovative and practical ideas for classroom use that are rooted in current research; this is a journal for teachers by teachers
Manuscripts should meet these guidelines:
1 Be a minimum of 1,250 and a maximum of 2,000 words and, when appropriate, include high-resolution (300 dpi) files—as tiff, jpg, or pdf—of student work, photographs of students working, charts, diagrams, or other visuals;
2 Address the theme listed in the call for manuscripts for that issue;
3 Be double spaced with 1-inch margins in 12-point font;
4 Include 100-word abstract and bulleted list of key points; and
5 Follow the current edition of the publication manual of the American Psychological Association—please do
not include an abstract, footnotes, endnotes, or author identification within the body of the text Should a manuscript contain excerpts from previously published sources that require a reprint fee, the fee payment is the responsibility of the author

Tough Stuff
March 2020. Sometimes the world is not on its best behavior What do WE do, as middle level educators, to support, guide, and be a resource for students who are either directly or indirectly dealing with tough stuff? What parts of our curriculum are best used to consider local, national, or world events in order to model critical thinking and civil discourse about controversial issues? When terrifying and disheartening things happen to young people, what are our roles as teachers? How do we model equality and equity for our students? This issue welcomes frank conversations about the range of tough stuff our middle level students face as well as the important issues we need to purposely discuss in order to provide safe places for questions and concerns Submission deadline: June 1, 2019

These calls for “What’s Next” are an opportunity for us to look closely at what is happening right now in our classrooms—and what we see coming next For this issue, we focus in on the “what” of our teaching—the texts, textbooks, and curriculum we use Do you use a textbook to do smart and compelling work? What are the “must teach” texts that make up your non-negotiable list? How does your system engage in personalized learning? How do we best use/transform/deploy/imagine the programs and curricula we receive? This issue invites you to push against and challenge our thinking What do we need to do next?
