The splendid monuments and gardens of the Mughal emperors represent one of thepinnacles in world architecture. The inception of Mughal architecture during the first halfof the 16th century in northern India, then known as Hindustan, and its development overthe next 200 years can only be explained within the context of a supremely powerfuldynasty which took particular delight in investing substantially in grandly scaled citadels, palaces, mosques, tombs and gardens. As the Mughal throne passed uninterruptedly fromfather to son, this sustained constructional tradition resulted in an impressive series ofbuildings and garden resorts, many of which survive to this day as testaments to theaesthetic refinement and seemingly unlimited financial resources of their royal patrons.
