XXth General Chapter 2019
On 13th February
2019 the curtain was
drawn on the 20th
Ordinary General
Chapter of our
beloved
Congregation at the
solemn Eucharist
presided over by our
Superior General
Rev. Fr. Abraham
Vettuvellil. The
newly elected
members of the
General Curia were the main concelebrants. This impressive ceremony was witnessed by the
rest of the capitulants in St. Francis de Sales Shrine at the North East Provincialate, Guwahati,
Assam. The Chapter spoke in one voice about the importance of a renewed fidelity to the
charism of our Congregation. Our charism invites us to live the spirit and spirituality of St.
Francis de Sales in our community and mission. The four pillars of our charism are -
Consecrated Life in Community, Mission, MSFSness and Salesian Spirituality. The Chapter
provided a rare occasion for many of us to interact with the capitulants who were representing
our confreres who are working in thirty countries around the globe. The organizers and the
steering committee left no stone unturned to make this event a successful and an enriching
experience for all the participants.
The General Chapter once again reminds us that through our religious commitment we are
called to live a life of fraternal communion and it emphasized the need to strengthen our
community life. Our community life is to be lived and expressed through our fraternal love,
common prayer, common table-fellowship, sensitivity to the needs of one another, mutual
respect, recognition, appreciation and encouragement of each other’s contribution to the
community as well as the apostolic activities.
The Newly Constituted General Curia of Our Congregation.

Archbishop Elias Gonsalves the New Shepherd of Nagpur Archdiocese
His Holiness, Pope
Francis appointed Rt.
Rev. Elias Gonsalves,
the Bishop of Amravati,
Maharashtra as the new
Archbishop of Nagpur.
This ecclesiastical
provision was made
public in Rome on
Monday, 3rd December,
2018. The See of
Nagpur had been vacant
following the death of
Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara on April 19, 2018.
Most Rev. Elias Gonsalves was born on 4th July, 1961, in Chulna Village, Vasai Road, Thane,
Maharashtra. He studied at St. Pius X Seminary, Mumbai and was ordained priest on 1st April,
1990 in Vasai, for the Archdiocese of Bombay. He has a B. A. in History and Economics from
Bombay University (1982). He did his studies in Community Based Development and
3
Leadership from St. Francis Xavier University, Coady Institute, Canada and has also done
studies in Counselling.
He was Assistant Parish Priest at Nandakhal, Vasai (1990-1991) and Sandor, Vasai (1991-
1997); Youth Coordinator for South Vasai Deanery (1993-1996); Priest in-charge at Roha
(1997-2004); Priest in-charge at Panvel (2005-2008); Assistant Director and then Director,
Centre for Social Action, Mumbai (2008-2012); Director, Sarvodaya Centre for Capacity
Building, Mumbai (2009-2012). He was elected Bishop of Amravati on 11th July, 2012 and was
ordained on 29th September, 2012. As Bishop he was in charge of Catholic Education in the
Western Region Catholic Bishops’ Council.
The Catholic community of Nagpur, Amravati, Mumbai and especially Archbishop’s near and
dear ones from Vasai including the Cardinal, Archbishops, Bishops, clergy and religious
numbering around 5000 attended the episcopal installation of Bishop Elias Gonsalves as the
eleventh Bishop of the Archdiocese of Nagpur, on 27th January at 3.30 pm in front of St Francis
de Sales Cathedral. The ceremony was held in the presence of His Eminence Oswald Cardinal
Gracias of Bombay Archdiocese. This was followed by a thanksgiving Holy Mass presided over
by Archbishop Elias. Rev. Fr Jerome Pinto, Administrator of the Archdiocese welcomed the
Congregation and requested them to pray for the new shepherd. After the Eucharist a short
felicitation program was held during which Archbishop Elias was greeted by the faithful, and
civil and ecclesiastical dignitaries. A prayer dance, welcome dance and a folk dance was put up
by students of neighbouring schools. A few speeches were also given by some of the dignitaries.
This was followed by a fellowship meal for all.
The liturgy was well organized and the choir sang melodiously. The arrangements for the
occasion were very well done. All this called for a lot of planning and dedicated hard work by
different committees. The Fransalians of Nagpur also made a significant contribution for the
occasion. Fr. Melroy headed the accommodation committee and guests were accommodated and
well looked after by all our three communities. They were extremely satisfied with all the
arrangements made for their comfortable stay. Many confreres also helped for the orderly
distribution of meals to the people. As we thank God for giving us a new shepherd we wish him
God’s blessings in his new office and assure him of our prayers and sincere cooperation for the
good and growth of the local church in the Nagpur Archdiocese. Fr. Melroy Almeida MSFS
Charism Retreat cum Training Program
The Parish Mission Preaching [PMP]
members from all the six Indian
Provinces assembled at Charis Bhavan
from 12th to 17th November for the
charism retreat cum training program.
These were grace filled days for the 37
confreres of which 7 were from Nagpur
Province; Fr. K.V. Joseph, Fr. P.M.
Joseph, Fr. Isaac, Fr. Sandeep Tirkey, Fr.
Christopher Lakra, Fr. Wilson and Fr.
Vincent Minj. The program was
organized by Fr. Angelo Fernandes and Fr. Jose Parappillil. The participants were accorded a
warm welcome with traditional shawls of Kerala. Charish Bhavan is a place of prayer and
worship. Here many come and experience the love and power of Jesus; they are filled with the
4
power of the Holy Spirit and are enriched by the Word of God. It was in this hallowed place that
we really enjoyed true Fransalian hospitality during our stay.
The theme of the first day was Authentic Preachers. From the talks the message was very clear
that one has to be anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit in order to preach the Living Word of
Jesus to the people of God. On the second day, Fr. Mathew Naikaparambil V.C. spoke about the
importance of the Holy Spirit, the Power of Personal Prayer, of Intercession, of the Blood of
Jesus and of praying the Three Hail Marys. The third day was set apart for the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. The animator spoke about the importance of the Last Seven Words of Jesus from
the Cross and told us to imbibe these supreme messages of our Lord and Master. The retreat
ended with reflections on Priestly Authority and a very meaningful anointing adoration
ceremony.
After the program we visited many holy and historical places: the tombs of St. Alphonsa, St.
Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Blessed Kunjachan. We also had the joy of visiting the homes and
enjoying the hospitality offered to us by the dear ones of Fr. K.V. Joseph and Fr. Isaac John. We
were happy to attend a solemn Syro-Malabar Qurbana. Then we visited Prakash Bhavan, our
minor seminary. Fr. Paul and all the community members extended a warm welcome to us.
During the four days of our journey we experienced true joy of being a Fransalian. Being
empowered with the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit we were reenergize to return to our
places of ministry and set the world on fire with our preaching of the Word and living a life of
witness. Live Jesus. Fr. Vincent Minj MSFS
Goal Setters and Goal Getters
The Annual Parents
Day of St. Xavier’s
School, Sini, was held
on 15th December. It
was a memorable
evening for the parents
of our students as they
watched their dear ones
perform with joy and
enthusiasm. The theme
of the program was
“Sad Bhavana” which
means setting one’s
goals to the highest achievable level. It highlighted every student’s quest to follow their dream.
All the items of the program were centered on the theme, explaining how they need to set their
goal to ensure a bright and joyful future life.
Dr. Basarat Kayyum IAS, the SDM of Seraikella - Kharswan was the Chief Guest of the
program. In his address he said that every child has the ability to achieve the goal that s/he has
laid down for oneself and education is the most powerful method to prepare them for it. Mr. S.
K. Anand, Principal of Railway Training Institute was the Guest of Honour. He exhorted the
parents to keep their children from the so called ‘Mobile Phone Culture.’ The children were
highly appreciated for their spectacular performance that not only exhibited their self-confidence
but also portrayed their dreams of unity and brotherhood of cultures, languages and groups. The
students who excelled in academics in the year 2017-2018 were honoured with awards.
5
Every student is unique and having realized this uniqueness parents and teachers need to work in
unison to unlock their talents and enable them to blossom. Heartiest Congratulations to all the
staff members who meticulously planned the program and with true commitment worked
tirelessly to bring out the best of our students and make the program a grand success. May the
Xavierites of Sini continue to shine in all that they do and achieve the goals that they have set
for themselves. Fr. Anto Thomas MSFS
Report on the Congregational Retreat: Walk the Way and Live the Grace
On 26th evening most of
the participants of the
retreat had already
checked in at the MSFS
Provincialate, Nagpur.
It was a joy to welcome
members from other
provinces who desired
to take part in the
retreat. There were a
total of 70 participants.
The preachers were Fr.
Binu E. of South West
Province and Fr. Austin
Joy of Pune Province. To celebrate the Birth of Jesus as well as the birthday of our Provincial
Fr. Muthuswamy, we had adoration at 7.30 pm followed by a sumptuous meal at 8.00 pm.
Besides the retreat participants all members of the Nagpur Apostolic Community and the Sisters
of the Holy Cross took part in the celebrations. Fr. Melroy, with his unique touch of humour,
extended a warm welcome to all present. A special word of welcome was given to our former
Provincial, Fr. A. M. Sebastian and the two preachers of the retreat. The two newly ordained
priests, Fr. Anil Pandit and Fr. Katru Vinayanand were felicitated by the Provincial with flower
bouquets. Then together with the birthday boy they cut the cake as all joyfully sang
Congratulations and Happy Birthday. The food was blessed and all partook of the meal. The
spirit of joy was visible in the air as people moved around greeting each other and meeting old
friends after ages - warm hugs, joyous smiles, a tickle and a giggle, a burst of laughter while
recalling old memories was the order of the evening. What a Fransalian reunion!
The introductory session was at 9.15 pm in the chapel. Fr. William accorded a formal welcome
to the preachers and gave a brief introduction about them. Fr. Provincial welcomed them with
bouquets and then addressed the gathering about the importance of the Congregational Retreat.
He also welcomed all the members and wished them a fruitful retreat. Fr. Binu then took over
and gave a brief introduction of the time table and the purpose of having such a retreat. In his
introductory remarks he said that a retreat is a time to rest and relax; a time to reflect and a time
to renew.
27-12-18: 1) Forming a Religious and Missionary Conscience – Fr. Binu - Using a number of
Biblical passages and examples, he made the point clear. To grow in religious consciousness
and become a spiritual person one has to: a) Believe in the love and presence of Jesus in our
lives; b) Love and live Jesus in our lives; c) Remember whom we represent.
6
2) Religious Life in view of Pope Francis – Fr. Austin – With apt quotations from the Bible,
Church Documents, our Constitutions and relevant thoughts of Pope Francis he elucidated the
topic in a very practical way. Every religious is called to give three forms of testimony: a) See
Jesus as the centre of our lives; b) Spirit of Poverty; c) Mercy.
3) The Second Vatican Council on Religious Life – Fr. Binu – The sharing highlighted the
following points: a) Clarity of focus; b) A new Ecclesiology and Spirituality; c) The study and
teaching of Sacred Scripture; d) Education of members; e) Avoiding multiplication of laws and
regulations.
28-12-18: 1) SFS on Self-Transformation – Fr. Binu – Focusing on the Christological Model
of Life which SFS himself followed, we are called to transformation in three areas: a) Spiritual
Formation; b) Human Formation; c) Missionary Formation. By giving very practical points for
growth in these three areas; by examples and relevant quotations from the life of SFS, he made
the point very clear.
2) Fr. Mermier on Religious Life – Fr. Austin - For Fr. Mermier religious life is the point of
oneness with God. His life was a life: a) Centered on Prayer; b) In the Holy Eucharist; c) Filled
with virtues. He spoke of our call to be rooted in the Salesian ideal of the love of God, which is
expressed in external actions as we tirelessly work in the Lord’s mission. He also highlighted
the common falls of God’s Church which we will experience when we take our priestly duties
very lightly and do divine things in a careless way.
3) Community Life – Mission of the Local Community - Fr. Binu – The focus was on the
three essential aspects of community: a) Respecting individual members uniqueness; b)
Maintaining a collective identity and discerning God’s will together; c) Living a life of Salesian
virtues. The practical aspect on what to do to maintain community life was dealt with by the
following points: a) Sense of family; b) Forgiving love; c) A culture of dialogue; d) Avoiding
judgements and gossips; e) Responsible use of the media and internet.
29-12-18: 1) Consecration and Availability to God through Community – Fr. Austin – It is
an invitation by Jesus to give up our personal agenda and accept God’s agenda. We are called to
establish true relationships by accepting the other’s past, supporting his present and encouraging
his future. We are called to play the role of the sentinel of informing the people of the dangers
that are coming. [Ez 3/1-6] We have to make our community not a purgatory but a family.
2) The Three Vows – Poverty – Fr. Binu – He focused on the two dimensions of the vow: a)
Freedom from craving for possessions; b) Solidarity with the poor. We can make sense of the
vow of poverty by - a) Having a good understanding of the vow in the present context; b)
Making personal effort; c) Making community effort. At the practical level we are called to: 1)
Simplicity of life; 2) Diligent management of money; 3) Hard work; 4) Trust in Divine
Providence.
3) Obedience – Fr. Austin – He spoke of disobedience which led to sin and obedience which
brought salvation. [Rom 5/19]. At the personal level one need to have willingness and
promptness and at the community level one should not be over ambitious and try to promote
oneself. He also spoke of three types of holy obedience: ordinary meant for all Christians;
religious by the practice of the evangelical councils; of love which is blind, prompt and
persevering.
7
30-12-18: 1) Chastity – Fr. Binu – He focused on the two dimensions of the vow: a) Loving
God with an undivided heart; b) Loving everyone with Christ’s own love. He explained in detail
that to live this vow we have to understand – 1) Our culture; 2) Our body and mind; 3) Our
commitment. We need to make a joyful gift of ourselves to God and to others. We are called to
be Brahmacharis, that is, to love God with an undivided heart and to love others as Christ loved.
2) Consecration as Availability to God through Mission – Fr. Austin – Fr. Mermier picked up
the missionary dimension of SFS. We are called to - a) Separation from the world [1 Jn 2/15-
17]; b) Separation from the family [Lk 14/26]; c) Separation from oneself [Mk 8/34-35]. SFS
says that what matters is how well you have sown the seed, and not how much you have
harvested. Our leadership matters for our mission to be successful, especially in the aspect of
animation of spiritual activities and celebration of the sacraments
31-12-18: Frontier Mission – Fr. Binu – Our basis is the mission mandate of Jesus [Mt 28/19];
called to a larger mission [Is 49/6]; to renew the world [Jer 1/10]. The topic was made clearer
by different example from the Bible and Church History. Frontier mission is everywhere. So we
need to: a) Come out of our comfort zone; b) Minister to the most vulnerable; c) Extend the
three apostolates into newer areas; d) Be available for foreign mission when needed; e) Have a
collective effort.
The Provincial, Fr. Muthuswamy conducted a session in which he dealt with Province matters.
He shared some of his observations of his visits dealing with community life and development
of projects that were undertaken by the Province. He also informed the members of the
forthcoming forum meetings, seminar for those who have completed 10 - 25 years of ordination
and the annual retreats. He concluded by saying that our missions will be successful provided
we live a life connected with the Lord.
The concluding mass was celebrated by the Provincial. After the mass Fr. Vinayanand thanked
the preachers for the wonderful and inspiring retreat they had preached. In the dining room the
workers were thanked by Fr. Sylbester Xalxo for the good food provided and for taking care of
other needs like washing of clothes and keeping the premises clean. All then joined for the meal
and slowly the confreres began to leave for their mission stations refreshed and renewed to give
themselves for the Lord’s work in the New Year. Fr. Melroy Almeida MSFS
Feast of SFS in Sini Church
Whenever we celebrate
the feast of a saint we
celebrate God and the
glory of God in the
world. It is therefore
rightly said: ‘If you
celebrate the feast of
your patron saint, it will
bring you joy, peace of
mind, God's blessings
and good fortune.’
Sunday, 27th January
was such an occasion for
the parishioners of Our Lady of Nativity Church, Sini, to experience all those good pleasures
8
that come from God. We joyfully celebrated the feast of St. Francis de Sales, the heavenly
patron of the MSFS Fathers who render their service in this parish. To spiritually prepare
ourselves for the occasion a day of recollection and prayer was preached by Fr. Vincent Minj
MSFS.
He shared with us about the life, teachings and spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales. He was
also the main celebrant for the feast day Eucharistic celebration. Since the feast of SFS was
celebrated for the first time in the parish a good number of faithful came for the celebration. The
church was full as all came with enthusiasm and well prepared to listen to the talks and
participate in the Eucharistic celebration. After having been spiritually fed all partook of the
festive meal. Then foot tapping music was played and all danced to their heart’s content and
slowly went back to their home.
The parishioners expressed their sincere appreciation to the parish priest, Fr. Emile Tirkey for
having organized such a meaningful celebration. They also were grateful to Fr. Vincent for
enlightening them on the life and spirituality of SFS and to all the MSFS fathers who joined for
the celebration and shared their joy. They looked forward to many more such meaningful and
inspiring celebrations in the future for their spiritual growth and to strengthen their solidarity as
a community of believers. Fr. Emile Tirkey MSFS
6th Annual Sports Meet at SFS School, Neemuch
“Sports do not build
character. They reveal
it.”[Haywood Broun]
Sports and games are
very important for the
overall development of
every student. They
play a very unique role
in keeping human
beings fit and healthy.
St. Francis de Sales
School, Neemuch,
M.P. celebrated its 6th
Annual Sports Meet on 19th January 2019. It was a real delight to have Rev. Fr. Kennedy
Thomas, the Manager of St. Thomas Sr. Sec. School, Mandsaur, as the Chief Guest of the event.
On the release of colourful balloons and to the joyful clapping of the students, Fr. Thomas
declared open the annual sports meet. The March Past by the students of 5 to 9 set the ball
rolling for the start of the sports events.
With the Head Boy along with house captains leading the contingents, the students marched
with pride as the music played in the background. Then the sports torch was lit and the
participants took the Oath of Sportsmanship. This was followed by a range of different drills.
With excitement in the air the competitions began with a Prayer Dance by classes 1st and 2nd.
All the students from class I to IX took part in the various competitions. The tiny tots of the Pre-
Primary section had the following items - Jalebi race, Cone race, Bouquet race and Bursting the
balloons. They enjoyed themselves especially as their parents and others encouraged them with
loud claps.
The Primary and High school students had a number of track and field events like Javelin
Throw, Long Jump, High Jump, 100, 200 and 400 meters race and Hurdles.
9
The thrill and excitement of the students were doubled when the winners’ names were
announced and they proudly climbed the podium to receive medals and certificates from the
Chief Guest. In his message Fr. Kennedy expressed his appreciation to the Management, Staff
and students for the well conducted program. He encouraged the students to develop themselves
in the sports and games field as that would also help them to do well in studies. He
congratulated the winners and encouraged the others never to give up but move ahead with
optimism. “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” [Vince Lombardi]
To mark the end of the 6th Annual Sports Meet the flame of the torch was put off. Then
everyone stood in attention and enthusiastically sang the National Anthem. Mr. Deepesh
