WHAT ARE ROCKS?
Rock are EVERYWHERE! Technically speaking, they are…
Solid Naturally occurring Made of minerals or mineral type
materials
WHAT ARE ROCKS MADE OF?
Some are made of just one kind of mineral: Pyrite (aka Fool’s Gold) Quartz
Some are made of severaldifferent kinds of minerals:
Granite
HOW DO WE CLASSIFY THEM?
Rocks are put into 3 different groups: Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary
DO THEY STAY THE SAME?
Rocks are always changing Each type of rock can change into
another type Example: Igneous can become
Metamorphic Rocks change with time, heat, and
pressure
THE ROCK CYCLE
The rock cycle describes the process by which rocks change with heat and pressure
