Fine Fiesta lifts Ford gloomDerek Ogden

The Ford Fiesta is set to rattle the opposition in the small car market

IT’S Fiesta time!Following the depressing news

of the end of its vehicle productionin Australia, Ford has somethingto celebrate.

The blue oval recently got its GoFurther campaign off the ground, launching the Fiesta small carDown Under.

Ford is determined to rattle thecages of a few rivals with its newhatchback offering the latesttechnology and fuel-efficiency athighly competitive prices.

A true global car, the new WZseries Ford Fiesta comes as a five-door hatch in three specificationsincluding entry-level Ambientestarting at $15,825, plus on-roads,stylish Trend and range-toppingSport.

The first two are on sale now,the last model will hit showroomsthis month.

Added to the mix is a high-performance three-door in theshape of the Fiesta ST, but moreof this elsewhere.

Built in Thailand, the newFiesta five-door is covered bymyFord Capped Price Servicingon all models.

A stylish up-to-date five-doorexterior of the new Ford Fiesta isset off by a deep trapezoidal radi-ator grille moved up from theposition it held in the previousmodel.

A sharp wedge plays off thegrille, extending via a modernheadlamp arrangement, finallylinking up with a distinctive rearlight cluster.

The same sharp looks are re-peated in the cabin kitted out withcontrols close at hand and instru-ments bathed in a classy blue light

as opposed to the brash red of thesuperseded model.

The surroundings are clothed inthe latest quality materials andfabrics giving no hint of claustro-phobia to occupants settled insculptured supportive seats withample room for all but thebroadest shoulders.

Making its debut across thewhole Fiesta range is Ford SYNCoffering hands-free, voice-acti-vated in-car connectivity with mo-bile phones and media playersincluding Bluetooth hands-freephone and music streaming.

Other standard connectionsinclude a USB/iPod port andsteering wheel-mounted audiocontrols.

Other new standard featuresinclude cruise control withswitches on the three-spokeleather-wrapped wheel, front andrear power windows, aircondition-ing, six-speaker audio system andtrip computer.

Also new to Fiesta is EcoMode, which measures the drivers gearshifts in relation to speed andengine load.

Fuel-efficient driving is re-

warded with leaf icons displayedon the instrument cluster.

The Ford Fiesta Ambiente andTrend feature a new 1.5-litreDuratec unit delivering 82kW ofpower and 140Nm of torque, withofficial fuel consumption of 5.8litres per 100 km.

That’s 0.3L/100km better thanthe previous generation 1.6-litreengine.

The Fiesta Sport, on the otherhand, makes use of Ford’s new1.0-litre EcoBoost engine, whichwith manual transmission, de-livers 92kW of power and 170Nm of

torque, with consumption of4.9L/100 km and carbon dioxideemissions of 115g per kilometre.

Both engines are linked to eithera five-speed manual or six-speedPowerShift transmission.

Occupant safety earns a five-star ANCAP crash rating withultra-high strength steels in thebody structure to ensure rigidityand protection.

Seven airbags including driversknee bag, ABS braking with brakeassist and dynamic stability con-trol feature on all models.

Hill Launch Assist is new to theFiesta, making it easier to set offon an incline without using thehand brake. On a gradient greaterthan 4 per cent, the vehicle willremain stationary for a short timeafter the brake pedal is released.

The brakes are released auto-matically when the accelerator isdepressed.

The Fiesta Trend showed itselfto be completely at home during adrive through the inner-city andsuburbs of Melbourne and later onthe highway.

On the move, performance wasnever lacking, the manual gear-shift slipping effortlessly throughall five cogs.

The generous 140Nm of torqueon tap had the car pulling awaywith minimum effort in higherratios, avoiding strain on the en-gine and saving fuel.

Steering feedback ensured tightlane changes were made possiblewith confidence and accuracy, tramlines relatively easy to avoid.

Let loose on the open road, theFiesta produced a smooth andrelaxed drive on all but unevensurfaces where the ride tendedtowards the choppy end of thespectrum.
