MOURNING THE FALLEN The more observant among you may have noticed I’ve been a bit quiet the past couple of months. Late last year I was driving to the Motorfest Dine With Your Ride Charity Dinner when I began to see smoke and flames coming out from underneath the back of my Porsche. I coasted to a smoky stop in the Publix parking lot off highway 98 at Grand Boulevard. The South Walton Fire depart-ment responded at about 4:35 p.m. and put the fire out, but the 1987 930 Turbo from the front cover of our very first Motor-fest Magazine, issue number 000001, was destroyed. The Porsche 930 Turbo was the ultimate race car of its time and to this day is still regarded
very highly by past and pres-ent rivals. The 930 is a machine that must be driven – human in-put is required, desired and es-sential. My old 930 Turbo had a real personality. I had to earn its trust and respect before the 930 would let me experience its true nature. The car had a cadence when you drove it; more like a dancing partner, rather than an extension of ones self. You had to become accustomed to the music, once mastered the re-ward was the unbridled power of this car. I’ve joined the lucky club where they say you’re lucky to be alive, you can always find a new 911. To me, it’s not a happy ending or the end of the story.

Join us in welcoming this icon of sex and power, 2004 Replica ‘67 427 Shelby Cobra to the Motorfest Stable of Wheels. On loan to us from a fairly successful local businessman (see front cover featuring his Citation V, Customized Indian Scout and lovely fianc’e) the Shelby Cobra Kit is a simple formula, big American-engine set in a petitBritish sports car shell, netting a whopping 800BHP. In the months to come we’ll take this Corvette-Beater to shows and events along the Gulf Coast. We’re lining up a proper test drive article, similar to the one we’ve done in this issue on the Porsche Panamera (you’ll find on page 18).
The new 2,529 pound Kit Cobra has a top speed of 185+ mph, which should be just enough to help us get over the recent loss of our last Motorfest Test-Car, the 911 Turbo.Breaking traction at speeds up to 100 M.P.H.The Shelby promises to be a worthly successor and a great addition to our driving team.
Nearly 50 years on, the most recognizable Carol Shelby design ever.

American Idol is near to being shelved, Michael Jackson has risen and here we are in the year 2013 - lucky us. The Mayan Apocalypse has passed and it seems the more things change the more they stay the same, even the Shuttle is back to samba dancing with 747s.
Here in America we’re taught to always chase the next big thing, the newest technology, the fastest social networks. At motorfest that means the more rare alloys and smooth 12 bangers the better (See Pagani p36).

The Bloodhound SSC is on track to become the fastest car in the world - faster than a speeding bullet, roughly 1,000 MPH. Rolling on Aluminum wheels capable of withstand-ing 50,000 times the force of earths gravity the BSSC entire design befuddles the mind. The engine is a speedy recipe: add one part rocket engine, one part race car motor and sprinkle on an afterburner. The resulting brew produces six times the
power in all the cars in an entire Indy Car race. Eating up a ton of fuel in 20 seconds the BSSC uses its Formula One engine as a fuel pump to feed its jet and hit 300 MPH in 15 seconds. The trip from 350 to 1,050 MPH only takes 25 seconds, top speed is one mile every 3.5 seconds. The entire project is an effort to encourage children around the world to study science and engineering.

MERCEDES DOTHAN NAMES JOHNNY NASH AS THEIR NEW GENERAL MANAGER
Since 1995 Johnny Nash has been travelling throughout the Southeast, spreading the word about Mercedes-Benz’s fabled safety, security and dependability. As the new General Manager for Mecedes-Benz of Dothan, the road has finally led him home. Stop by for a visit and he’ll say his goal is to remind drivers throughout the Wiregrass and Panhandle of an enduring Mercedes-Benz philosophy... that life is too short and the road too long to drive anything less than a Mercedes.

DISTRACTIONS IN THE COCkPIT
Two pilots using laptops and discussing crew scheduling procedures lose situational awareness and overfly their destination airport by 150 miles. A Captain calls for the after landing checklist while completing a difficult double right turn with limited space between runways and misses seeing the hold line, pulling onto the runway in front of a departing wide body aircraft. These real incidents are only two examples of what can happen if you allow yourself to become distracted when operating an aircraft.
Distractions in the cockpit are one of the leading causal factors in pilot deviation runway incursions. The runway hold line is a single point on the airport, and if you are not looking for where to hold short and you miss the signs and markings, there is no other visual cue until you reach the edge of the runway. Distractions which have resulted in pilot deviations include:
· Completion of run-up procedures while moving the aircraft· Dealing with passenger’s questions or issues· Crewmembers going heads down in order to program instruments· Using electronic flight bag devices while taxiing
What can you do to guard against distractions?· Have your head up and out at all times when taxiing your aircraft. If tasks require you to go heads down, stop in a safe place and complete the task, then continue to taxi.· Brief passengers on the importance of maintaining a sterile cockpit while taxiing, and during other critical phases of flight.· Review airport diagrams and departure procedure charts before taxi, identifying locations or operations during which distraction carry a greater risk. Here’s a First-Drive Review I done on the Panamera, now my assessments don’t follow the tread-worn patterns of other magazine road tests. First of all I road test on the curvy back roads of lower Alabama. Judging such factors as the behavior and feel of steering the car around bends, straight-aways and the unexpected train tracks, evaluating performance in breaks and acceleration, as well as how the interior space fits the taste and comfort of the well heeled, well portioned down-home discerning American driver. All of these
elements determine whether the car is worth a quick trip to the dealership or if the manufacturer missed the mark. Porsche’s Panamera, is the hottest new model in Porsche’s current program. I call it the GQ man’s sports car –it’s bold, fast, quick, and stylish. What’s more, Porsche offers a great number of options including my favorite piano black interior.
The Panamera fun factor reveals itself through nine selections for the U.S. market. You can, for example, gaffe in at $75,500
for a 3.6-liter V-6 Panamera and get to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. Or you can leave that in the dust with the $173,500 4.8-liter Turbo S, which hits 60 in 3.6 sec. Or perhaps you are propelled toward that $95,000 S Hybrid.
So where does that put the newest variation, the $109,900 GTS? Porsche calls it, “The sportiest of all Panamera models...” That claim seems odd given the Turbo’s spot at the top of the horsepower and image list, but once you’ve driven the GTS, Porsche’s report makes sense.

I left Porsche of Destin to try the 2013 Porsche Panamera GTS, which was popping its split-second PDK shifts as soon I accelerated down Airport Road in Destin, away from the Orr’s dealership. I pointed the nose at the first apex and there was a moment of confidence-inspiring under steer, the car sets and responds.
The Panamera’s fun factor revealed itself through a mix of impressive features. Its all-wheel drive snapped around corners and provided firm traction on wet roads, the air suspension added an extra layer of comfort, and the brakes, borrowed from the Turbo model, offered superior and consistent stopping performance. All totaled, you almost overlook the two seats behind you.
As usual, I took the Panamera through my south Alabama road course, which means Geneva County Alabama where the police seem to be a bit friendlier. I made several stops in Geneva and the wow factor muscled with every mile. I then shot off to the house in Dothan, followed by a customary visit at Mills Produce on Highway 52 East to pick up Slocomb tomatoes for Clemenza’s restaurant. Two obsessive stops completed my road adventure; one to test the Panamera’s quarter mile time on Florida HWY 1 and a final destination at the Porsche Club of Destin’s favorite: Red Bay Grocery.
What differentiates the GTS? Porsche started by upping the horsepower of the S from 400 to 430 for the GTS, taking torque from 369 lb.-ft. to 384, with a huge well of it between 2500 and 5800 rpm. Much of that added power comes from a specific cam design and improved breathing on both intake and exhaust. The latter has a snappier note, which can be increased further via the push of a button. Match this engine to Porsche’s all-wheel-drive chassis and the PDK gearbox and you’ll see 60 mph in 4.3 seconds with a top speed of 179. That knocks a half second of the normal Pana-mera S, and puts the GTS just 0.3 sec off of the Turbo, which is 10 mph faster on the top end.
With the added horsepower come suspension changes, beginning with a 10-mm lowering. Shocks on the Porsche Active Suspension Management system has been firmed, and the rear track has been increased by 10 mm. Those are just a few of the changes, but as one Porsche engineer explained, when the suspension is on its normal setting, the GTS is actually firmer than the Turbo. In Sport Plus, the cars are very similar. To go with this aggressive approach, Porsche fits the GTS with the Turbo’s braking system. Even with all this discussion about the GTS being flatter and firmer, it does not hand back a rough ride.
Porsche also outfits the GTS with its Sport Design front end. This profile swallows the air needed to churn out its 430 bhp, instead of sipping it daintily as some Panamera appear to do. The exterior detailing
“When the suspension is on
normal setting, the GTS is
actually firmer than the Turbo”
includes a high-gloss black debonair and the Turbo’s bi-xenon headlamps to stylishly embrace the open road, day or night. Finally, the GTS’ seduc-tive rear end incorporates the Turbo’s 4-piece articulated spoiler and special exhaust pipes to facilitate that added snap a Porsche is known for.
Inside, the GTS has 18-way sport seats that beg the question: “How many ways can you adjust a seat?” That is, until you find the setting that fits you like a glove. Leather or Alcantara is
found on most every surface that’s not glass or metal. Behind the wheel is, without a doubt, a nice place to be...but that’s true of all Panamera. If you’re looking for a Porsche Pana-mera that easily leans into any bowed Alabama county highway or can work the apex on a road course race track, the new 2013 GTS is your car.
A special note of thanks to Destins ownOrr’s Porsche of Destin Florida
WHAT’S GERMAN FOR ROAD GOBBLER?
Don’t give BiKers
A BAD nAme You say Biker like it’s a BAD thing?
BRITTAIN MOTORS
First things first, just because they don’t look the part doesn’t
mean that person isn’t a “biker”. I use the term loosely because
many people or groups have their own opinion of what a BIKER
really is. Some people are very quick to judge when they see
someone on a motorcycle. And also become very judgmental
because of what a person rides. My favorite…”Oh that person
on the sport bike is careless; they are going to get theirselves
killed or kill someone else” or even better “oh…what biker gang
are you with…” makes you just smile and even sometimes laugh.
If you were to meet me on the street for the first time well
you would never guess at first glance I love riding a motorcycle
in my free time. Being a biker is not always what you see on
TV, yes there are some “bikers” out there that make others look
well… not so nice, but there are also those who are the com-
pletely opposite. The most common thing most of us encounter
when out riding is people either avoid walking near us or they
point and talk under their breath even worse is when they “don’t
see you” in the lane they merge into and they get mad because
you honk at them. A most recent thing that was overheard out
and about while riding was “ You say biker like it’s a bad thing
yet when you have a charity event and are running low on help
and donations you call on bikers..”
One of the things I love about riding is all the charity events
we can attend and help local families that are in need especially
during the holidays. Just a small example of this charity is a
local group called Iron Rockets (sport bike riders). They go to
local toy runs and donate to needy children and also participate
in the local Sharing and Caring. So really it doesn’t matter what
you ride or who you ride with it’s HOW you ride and that you
are your own person. So the next time you see a motorcycle
don’t be quick to judge, because well that might just be the next
lawyer you may need or your dentist, or even better a church
leader. Look twice motorcycles are everywhere.
I would like to thank the local Iron Rocket chapter for submit-
ting pictures and local friends who ride for their pictures.

“When you have a charity
event and are running low
on help and donations
you call on bikers..”
Cameras flashing, kids laughing and
playing, and the roar of motorcycles…
sounds like maybe a birthday or some-
thing of that nature but actually it’s a
charity event to help local families at
Christmas time. This isn’t something you
would expect on a normal day for a biker,
but for these bikers this is a year round
accomplishment for their community.
I have come to know a local mo-
torcycle club like family and have been
honored to write about them. The Iron
Rockets of Navarre Florida are known lo-
cally for all the charity events and foun-
dations they donate their time to. As we
sat around at the toy run I was able to
ask the chapter president a few questions
while he watched his kids run around
and play. ”What is the main goal of the
Iron Rockets when it comes to the com-
munity?” With a smile Stripper, the chap-
ter president, answered me without any
hesitation “The goal of the Iron Rockets
is to show the community that there
are good charitable guys in the motor-
cycle world, and that what you see on
t.v. is not what all M.C’s are about“. “Also
when a charity needs specific help they
call on the M.C’s of the area for help with
poker runs and assistance.”Taking some
time between my questions I was able
to get some awesome pictures of these
guys and their ladies. “It’s a brotherhood
like no other, a family that does not care
about diversities and to better everyone
in its best ability”.
As the day began to come to a close
and we finished up pictures I had one last
question for Stripper, “How many chari-
ties as a chapter do you help and should
we expect to see more in the future?”
“Currently we help Caring and Sharing
and plan to help more charities in the
future as we grow”.

MOTORFEST EOSSPANAMA CITY BEACH
The winding road with The Tricked Out Car Club... PC Beach, Florida is home to many unique things to explore and it is also home to a very unique car club called The Tricked Out Car Club or TOCC.
In March 2008, TOCC was founded in Bay County, Florida by James Clemens with the goal of an International Car Club designed around the peo-ple, cars, and the uniqueness of the communities for each local club. A club that was friendly and respectable, and a club that was well organized and professional. One big club across the globe, all acting as one small family.
They host two refreshingly different annual auto events (EOSS MOTORFEST & SCHOOL IS COOL), as well as, a race series called Bay County Car Club Challenge that pushes the local clubs at the local 1/8 mile dragstrip, Panama Beach Raceway in Fountain, Florida.
Motorfest Magazine had the chance to spend the day with the TOCC crew at their fall event called EOSS MOTORFEST 2012, which is held each late September at Spinnaker Beach Club and we had a fabulous time. There was something for everyone to enjoy, with over 200 vehicles of every possible type present, live music, award-winning food, all wheel drive Dyno, 4X4 Flex Ramp, product dis-plays, door prizes, cash prizes, trophies & more.
The main focus of this event was TOCC’s chosen charity, Anchorage Children’s Home, and they were present all day, too, and are some truly great people to meet, if you ever get the chance.
Along with these annual events, TOCC is present

WHAts inA nAmePicture a room adjoining the corporate board room of a major automobile manufacturer. Imagine several people sitting around a long, dark, mahogany table, the following ensues...Corporate Geek one: “okay, anyone come up with ideas for a name?”
Corporate Geek two: “I was thinking of flowers or plants; maybe lilac or sunflower?”
Corporate Geek one: “How about Poison Ivy?? This is a pick-up truck, not a rose garden!”
Corporate Geek three: “Maybe the name of a city or town?”
Corporate Geek one: “Been done all ready! People, think out of the box-we need to come up with something TODAY!!”
Corporate Geek Four (after a five minute delay): “Uh…Natural disasters?”
Corporate Geek one: “I like it! We did name a car after a burnt-out star (the Nova, not Lindsay Lohan)!”
Corporate Geek Four: “Tidal Wave? Earthquake? Tremors? Flash Flood?”
Corporate Geek one: “Those aren’t doing it-THINK people!”
Corporate Geek Five: “Maybe, avalanche?”
Corporate Geek one: “Avalanche-I like it! That has a real manly feel to it!”
Obviously, speculation on my part but would you really feel comfortable driving around in something named after a natural disaster? To me, they might as well use the names of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; “Hey, did you check out the new Chevy Pestilence? Sweet ride, if you can survive getting in the thing!”
The topic today-where do they come up with the names of vehicles?
Chevrolet did name a pick-up the “Avalanche” and Honda trumped them by naming their pick-up the “Ridgeline”- the place where av-alanches start; not a natural disaster yet but give it some time. As for the Dodge “Ram” se-ries of vehicles, the name “Ram” may sound masculine and viral but it is a male sheep; a sheep is still a sheep, basically cat-food for a mountain lion.
Just what arcane procedures do auto and pick-up manufacturers use in choosing names? Gran Prix, Impala, Mustang, Cougar, GTO, Bonneville are all names I understand; they imply grace, speed and beauty even if in some instances the vehicles sporting these tags have none of these traits. “Suburban” and “Yukon” I understand, as those vehicles are as big as their namesakes and use about as much gas daily as most suburban communities use in a week. But the Toyota “Sequoia”?; granted, named after a giant, American tree but, after all, it’s still a tree- a plant that stays rooted in one place for centuries. What were they thinking? Perhaps they wanted to use all the vowels in the English language but couldn’t find anything named “Sequoiay”?

?????As for the Koreans; I know the cars are really nice with all the bells and whistles known to humankind but I would truly feel uncomfortable climbing into something that says to me Killed In Action. It’s bad enough on today’s roadways without begging for mayhem to occur. Nissan was originally named Datsun when exported to the U.S.A.; apparently someone in corporate headquarters thought Datsun sounded better than Nissan in English. The point being, give yourself a little less doomsday moniker for the first few years before springing KIA on everyone.
As for the early years of Toyota, they seemed to have a cigar thing going; Corona, Corolla, Supra, Dutch Masters (just kidding)- drive ‘em or smoke ‘em, your choice. When Honda introduced the “Civic”, I thought they were going for car names that read the same backward and forward; I ful-ly expected the next Honda to be the “Toot” but was proven wrong with the introduction of the “Accord”; “Drocca” sounds more like a James Bond villain. Apparently they wanted drivers to be community conscious and in harmony with each other, failed attempts at best (have you driven out there lately? It’s not pretty!).
Most German manufacturers seem to ignore the “name game”. Volkswagen stands out, however, with some intriguing appellations.” Passat”? “ Tiguan”? “Golf”? What next, the two-seater “Badminton”? BMW and Mercedes Benz are number and letter crunchers. From the BMW 635CSI to the Mercedes AMG 500K, these two car companies elevate the Teutonic penchant for order and precision to an art form. Audi is also a participant in this linear, numeri-cal progression with “A” this and “A” that and an occasional “S” thrown in for good measure. “Quattro”, a name used on all their vehicles, is decidedly non-Germanic although it does sound more fetching than “Vier”. Maybach numbers their vehicles with the length of the car in me-ters; “57” or “62” with another one of those “S”’s thrown in occasionally. These cars are like owning a Tiger tank that can do 180mph or so, certainly an elite crowd.
French, British, Italian and Swedish cars are among the scarcest brands in the U.S.A. “Le
Car”, “Dauphin” and “Pallas” all have an elegant sound but even “Merde” sounds appealing in French. The British auto names also seem, like the language, dazed and confused; the Triumph “Spitfire” and the “TR-8”. Names, numbers, let-ters, anything goes; it’s no surprise the orderly Germans lost to them twice in the last century. Chaos will generally trump organization any day of the week. Still, how does one explain the Ger-man made “Mini”?
As for the Italians, just about everything coming from Italy is some kind of Fiat; in this country, the Fiat “500” or the Fiat Abarth “500” are the only incarnations one sees of this huge com-pany; both seem like “Smart” cars on steroids. As for Ferrari, a division of Fiat, these exotic and expensive beauties rest in a category almost exclusively of their own. Ferrari could release a $500,000.00, 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds, 12 cyl-inder rocket ship called the “Deathmobile” and would sell out of them faster than i-phones. I know I didn’t mention Lamborghini, Maserati or Alfa-Romeo but other than “Countach” and “Mucielago”, there really isn’t much to explore (“Quattroporte” does sound decidedly more ex-otic than “Four Door”).
Volvo and Saab? Break out the Lutefisk and the dragon ships! They both do numbers for their vehicles, names being too hard to think about when one is freezing all the time. Saab did toy with “Aero” for a while but stuck with just nam-ing the aircraft they build; “Viggen”, “Grippen” and “Things that go bump in the night”. The last I heard, Saab filed for bankruptcy and Volvo is comfortable selling everything they make to Soccer Moms.
I perhaps haven’t answered the question of “where do they come up with the names” but, I hope, I’ve shed some light on what might be the thought process behind the names. “Edsel” was easy; Henry’s son’s name but the Pontiac “Az-tec”? No clue on that one although the Mayans did seem to predict it’s demise.

Enter the Pagani Huayra (why-rah (why-not?)) a spicy Italian mid-engined cookie, with creme-filled motor courtesy of Mercedes. For the mere sum of $1,300,000 you too can pretend you are a holy hurricane. Named after Huayra-tata or “God of the winds” in Inca’nnese, the Pagani is more spaceship than car. Boasting an otherworldly 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed in excess of 230 MPH the level of performance and g-forces put this thing in a class of vehicle unto itself.
Jet-stream power comes in the form of a hand made twin-turbo 6.0 Mercedes-AMG V-12 engine, producing 720 horsepower and 740 lb·ft of torque. The Huayra pulls 1.66 positive g’s of lateral acceleration at top speed. A 210 lb seven-speed sequential gearbox and a single disc clutch put the power down. Stopping it is the job of the 6-piston front / 4-piston rear Brembo calipers. The rotors are drilled carbon ceramic numbers. Additional directional stability and stoping power comes from four

The Huayra employs a variety of this space age wizardry to keep it shinny side up. In addition to the flappy-whappy bits, the car adjusts its nose, tail and sides to improve directional integrity and road connection. This can be most noticeably appreciated in an off camber left hand hairpin over rough terrain where the car will employ almost all of its tricks to maintain your line, flaps - flap

The central chassis is constructed with Pagani’s proprietary carbon-titanium technology, a material that possesses both tensile strength and great overall rigidity-to-weight ratio. The backbone and tub made of this material protects the occupants while providing the perfect structural inner essenceof the car. The dashboard is itself produced from a single slab of aircraft aluminum.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
Assuming you have read Part One of Rules Of Engagement, Motorfest #5, at this point in your driving you are:
• Signaling every lateral move (you’ll know you’re there when you signal leaving your driveway)• Avoiding tailgating (as soul-satisfying as this is – the negative, possibly painful and expensive consequences of this activity speak for themselves)• Concentrating on the art/zen of fast driving (if you have purchased a set of skin-tight, ventilated driving gloves, congratulations, you’ve most likely arrived at the speeders fraternity; and, yes, wear them in the summer-they help you grip the wheel and are a signal to the cognizati that you are, indeed, a serious driver; like the hit-man driver in the movie “Bullitt” but with better results)
PART DEUX BY RAP
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
Etiquette at the Speed of Sound
This article will try to explain etiquette/civil-ity while rocketing along at excessive speeds (I cannot define excessive speed; it is all situation-al-45mph in your driveway might be excessive; is 154mph on Route 691 in my home state ex-cessive? It seemed the appropriate velocity at the time). The analogy that works for me, in a Walter Mitty sense, is to consider yourself a WW1 fighter pilot, a knight of the air. Baron Manfred von Richtofen is a perfect example. A deadly killer but a gracious opponent; it was nothing personal but it was a job he did very well (recommend watching the movie “The Red Baron” starring Matthias Schweighofer as the “Baron”). Drive with aplomb, dignity, courtesy but do this all at speed; never let emotion hold sway but, in a Nietzchean attitude, become the
Uberdriver, involved only with the vehicle and the speeding, moving in harmony with the road, weather and traffic but just FASTER than anyone else. “Situational Awareness” or, in plain terms, be aware of the road ahead and the road behind. Laser and radar detectors are fine but can distract you from driving with all the beeping and flashing lights. Always be on the look-out for convenient places for the authorities to establish their Revenue Collection Kiosks, commonly called “speed traps”. Speed-ing tickets are ridiculously expensive and slow you down considerably; best to let your keenest sense, your eyes, spot said sink-holes. If the driver several car lengths in front taps his brakes for no apparent reason, be wary–might be “John Law”

for whom he’s slowing down. My first bit of advice is to, if you must, install the detector as unobtrusively as possible but rely more on the visual picture; most likely if it beeps, it’s all ready too late. Always scan ahead and behind; Aunt Mildred might just be backing out of her driveway ¼ mile away with absolutely no regard to the velocity at which you’re approaching. As you have seen the tell-tale signs of her car moving, you should have ample time (perhaps even a full second) to choose at least three possible courses of action:•Since you are now paying attention to on-coming traffic (you are, aren’t you?), deftly slide into the opposing lane without a trace of slowing down or•Hit the brakes looking, as always, for es-cape routes in at least one other direction in case she finally does notice you and stops dead in the middle of the road.•Beep the horn-most likely a futile gesture for if she didn’t see you, she sure as hell is not going to hear you (I think hearing is the fourth or fifth thing that goes as you become older–memory is certainly in the top two). When committing to pass, check your “six”, ie, look behind to see if anyone is passing YOU. Hard to swallow, but accept that there are drivers faster than you; bum-mer but reality always has the last word; remember, even the “Red Baron” was shot down. Who knows, that guy passing you might be someone like Michael Schumacher out for a leisurely, but very fast, spin. Pass with speed and accuracy, leaving room between you and the poor sap you just passed at 100mph before pulling back in. This is especially critical on highways (if speeding there is your forte); 18 wheelers are huge and have equally huge blind spots; be considerate and linger in their blind spots for as short a time as possible. Remember, those guys are driving for a living; we’re screaming along for the thrill; most teamsters don’t need thrills when perched in something as big as a house travelling at 80mph.
44 motorfestmagazine.com WINTER 2013
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
AT 143MPH THE CARRERA FEELS LIKE ANOLYMPIC SPEED SKATER BREAKING AWAY
There’s an expression, “form follows function”; if you can’t function as one with your machine, then
practice. A smooth driver is always noticeable to the point where the speed is almost ignored by
other drivers (unless the other driver is of a similar vein as yourself; more on this later);
to me, it’s a case of “not what you do but how you look doing it”. Even
boxing has a certain grace when you see two skillful opponents
whose only intent is to knock the other guy senseless. Fluidity, grace, style and awareness all matter at speeds in excess of the limit.
46 motorfestmagazine.com WINTER 2013
To paraphrase Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor, “You can never be too rich or too fast”. As mentioned earlier, the speeding fraternity consists of thousands of like-minded drivers. The intent of Rules Of Engagement has been to separate you from this “herd”; to help make you a skillful practitioner of the art. If you are of the inclination to race other drivers (which I do NOT advise), then I would recom-mend an SCCA license and a race-track; there you can test yourself against others without causing mayhem to bystanders.
rULes of engAgement
WINTER 2013 motorfestmagazine.com 47
Remember, drive without emotion (other than the passion for vehicular control); if you are passed, your first reaction should be to applaud the other driver’s skill. Street racing is a recipe for disaster, full of unknowns; for example:
• Is the car that passed you capable of the speeds to which you can push it (if it’s something like a 1986 Corolla full of rust & passengers, probably not)?• Is the driver capable of driving in a fast yet courteous manner (tip-offs here-if the seat back appears to be reclined to the point of touching the back seat, he’s probably I.D.F.; windows tinted black as night, he/ she is probably I.D.F.; if the driver is wearing a baseball cap backward, he’s probably I.D.F.-Incapable of Driving Fast, not Israeli Defense Force, though they would come in handy if you happen across one of these clowns)?
Remember Aunt Mildred and her legion of clones cluttering up the roadways; racing another vehicle ratchets up the disaster factor exponentially. Instead, use that faster driver as a “rabbit”-follow at some distance and let him/her be the first through the speed-trap acting as a scout for yourself. Now for ultra-aggressive, road-rage inspiring imbeciles, leave them be. Much as one would like to scream, give offensive gestures or chase after these road-louts, the prevalence of fire-arms in the country should give you pause; there are a huge amount of guns out there with a huge amount of reckless drivers who own said weapons (no, I’m not anti-gun; I have a pistol-permit-I’m just against fruitcakes owning side-arms). It’s generally not worth the aggravation (I realize, once again with a nod to Walter Mitty, that as a knight in shining
carmour you feel almost compelled to do something about these troglodytes-in my early days of fast driving, I fancied myself the “Road Warrior” or “The Punisher”; in no instance did I bring justice to the road but I certainly paid in tickets & crashes; better to let the dozing Revenue Collectors finally do something right). Remember, you are always striving to be the “Uberdriver”; you are well above such petty concerns. As usual, Drive FastTake Chances and for the sake of looking good, never drive with your mouth open.

Crazy Cruisers Car Club started about 8 years ago with two couples (Larry & Cam and Roy & Susan) and 2 vehicles. We met at Emerald Coast Cruizin in Panama City Beach Florida and from that a close friendship developed. The four of us traveled a lot together and one day while out of town, we were discussing a name for our group, and Crazy Cruisers was born. Crazy Cruizers has now grown into a car club with 30 members and 23 vehicles plus honorary members in Texas and Tennessee and they join us at least once a year.

Crazy Cruisers is affiliated with the BC4 of Bay County Florida. This organization was founded to help clubs promote their shows and activities without overlapping. It works well so we can support many clubs throughout the year. Crazy Cruisers always makes a good showing at Friday Fest held in downtown Panama City Florida the first Friday of months March thru November. There are hundreds of vehicles and vendors and the spectator participation averages 10,000 a month. Downtown business and restaurants stay open late to support Friday Fest.

Crazy Cruisers vehicles are all drivers, meant to be enjoyed and seen. We appre-ciate the older vehicles and enjoy them as well as the smiles we put on someone’s face. Most of our vehicles date back to the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s with a couple of muscle cars from the 60’s. Some members built their cars from the ground up, some have pur-chased and redone but one thing is for sure, our car members work on their own vehicles and take great pride in displaying them. We have traveled to Tampa, Jackson-ville and Atlanta for Good Guys Shows. The NSRA show in Louisville KY has seen us three times. This year 2 members went to Evansville IN for the Frog Follies. Of course we cannot forget Hammond LA and the Coon Ass Redneck Nationals. Larry has the honor of being presented the coveted TOP
16 Award which is a toilet seat; you just have to be there to understand. We love the Ford F100 Super Nationals and Shades of the Past in Pigeon Forge TN. And there is nothing like Cruisin the Coast in Mississippi. All the venues are great, traffic is a bear, but going down Hwy 90 and looking to the south and seeing only beautiful white sand and the Gulf waters is breathtaking. Emerald Coast Cruisin in Panama City Beach Florida is becoming like home week for our members. We work closely with Rakes & Lisa Parrish before and during the event. Local car club members volunteer to assist with parking and we pass out flyers all year to help with advertising. In July, Crazy Cruisers Car Club is host to the National Car Collector Appreciation Day as mandated by the Senate. We have
done this for the past three years and every year it bigger and better. We are looking forward to July 2013. Communication among members for events is handled by the Cruise Director. Her duty is to gather show information (flyers) and attend BC4 monthly meetings and forward all information to the members. She also handles reservations and pickup points on area shows so we can cruise together. Crazy Cruisers Car Club differs from most in that we have no rules, no dues, and no meetings except the Christmas Party. We only require our members to enjoy life and Cruisin. Most are middle aged and up and we enjoy the second childhood we are experiencing. Many are retired and enjoying the good life. Perhaps that is why the name Crazy Cruisers fits us so well.

This past fall we lost a very special member at Team Motorfest - our dearest 911 Turbo. The belle of the ball in our arsenal of rides. Her last meal was 93 Octane and needless to say she went out in a blaze of glory. After extensive work recently the Pumps were upgraded and strengthened, the gas lines we last on the list. A faulty line was all it took to take our trusty steed off the road forever. She is totaled but not forgotten and as pappy used to say she’all that an a’bowl o’grits. . . Enjoy your last meal!

UnreLenteDRELENTLESSCHARTER FISHING
A voyage deep-sea for the big fish inspires
Brant Kelly to build the ultimate fishing machine
Destin’s history is steeped with a rich past related to fishing since it became a destination for the abundant bounty of
the sea when commercial operations started here in the mid-1800s. Founding fathers Billy Marler and Captain
Leonard Destin, for which the town was named, arrived here to take advantage of the huge array of fish located a short
distance from shore due to the area’s unique geography.
By 1900 the first private charter fishing business began here with over 100 boats available to take adventurous anglers out into the gulf to harvest the seas. By the roaring twenties in fact,
Destin became known nationally as The Bill Fish Capital of the Gulf and the business continued to grow from that
time to today’s burgeoning fishing phenomenon. Destin is now known as The Luckiest Fishing Village in the World and has
the largest private charter fishing fleet on the Gulf of Mexico.
GULF COAST FISH TRIPS
Brant Kelly, the captain of the Relentless, comes from a long line of founding fami-lies with fishing interests. The Kelly family also had extensive timber plantations here since the early part of the last century. Due to their land holdings, Grandmother Mattie Kelly is a local namesake and past philan-thropist. His Grandfather Coleman L. Kelly, after whom the Destin Airport is named, was an avid fisherman and started to take party boats out for charter fishing in the
1930s. This was briefly interrupted when World War II began since the government began rationing gasoline and only allowed fishing for commercial rather than recre-ational usage. He was able to convert back to Charter Fishing when the war ended in 1945. Brant continued the family fishing tradition by helping his father and grand-father out on their boats as a young boy. In fact, he began working hard on the docks and boats when he was only eight years UnreLenteD

old. Today with almost fifty years of fishing experi-ence behind him, Brant Kelly is one of the most re-spected captains in all of Destin. Captain Kelly began doing private fishing charters on his own boat called The Lady K which he operated successfully for many years.
In 2003 Kelly decided to design and build a new boat which as he says was the first of its kind, “built by fishermen, for fishermen.” Two of his deck hands and another friend who was a captain helped him with design ideas and building the boat which he named the Relentless. He fenced off part of the horse pasture behind his house to build it since his crew worked on this project almost every day. It took eleven months to complete the sixty-five by twenty foot boat which was christened for its first fishing ad-venture in October of 2004. The vessel was the first to incorporate not only state of the art fishing equip-ment but also provided luxuries for visiting angler cli-ents that were not found on any other charter boats. Last year, the United States Commerce Association named the charter boat Relentless as The Best in Destin for 2011. The Relentless has all the latest fish-ing equipment which includes advanced radar detec-tion, depth finders, current chart mapping technol-ogy and what Captain Kelly calls an awesome “fish finding machine.” The design of the boat also rede-
fined luxury in the Destin charter fishing industry giv-ing today’s pampered clientele comforts that meet or exceed expectations. There is a comfortable, full air conditioned galley complete with satellite TV in case that Auburn/Alabama game or other “must see” sporting events coincide with the fishing excursion! State Rooms below can sleep eight overnight guests comfortably for deep sea adventures which can go on for days. Many avid angler groups charter the Relent-less for multiple days of deep sea fishing adventures and bring back lots of delicious bounty. The kitchen on board is more than just ample with a full sized, stainless steel refrigerator and ovens.
DESTIN CHARTER FISHINGThe result of all their hard work is a luxurious, full service Destin charter boat with one of the most experienced captains around as well as a skilled, friendly crew who provide happy participants with a World Class fishing adventure. Lucky anglers in-clude everyone from the first time novice to the most hard core enthusiast. Accommodations are available for children and seniors as well as even those with handicapped needs. The skilled crew uses their many years of combined local experience as well as the latest fishing technologies to catch fish that will give you a wonderful memory of a lifetime. They show you where to drop your lines, advise you on angling Un

techniques and even help you reel in your catch if need be. After you return to the docks, the mates clean, filet and bag your catch for you. Most patrons provide them with a 15% tip for these helpful instructions and services. Once home with your sea trove of treasure you can tell everyone about your adventures while enjoying a feast of fresh fish! Some of the fish you may be catching include Amberjack, Black Drum, Black Grouper, Blue Marlin, Bluefish, Bonito, Cobia, Flounder, King Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Pompano, Red Drum, Red Snapper, Sailfish, Sheephead, Spanish Mackerel, Spotted Sea Trout, Tarpon, Tuna, Vermillion Snapper and Wahoo. It depends upon the season, what’s running and the type of fishing excursion you and your friends desire. Fishing is great here. On a recent trip Captain Kelly said his lucky charter anglers “caught literally thousands of pounds in a cornucopia of fish” which included both Blue and White Marlin which were tagged and released. They also caught a big 250 pound Swordfish, Mahi, Wahoo, Black Fin Tuna and Yellow Fin Tuna which were kept for good eating.
Besides bountiful fishing, the Relentless is also chartered for celebrating the nuptials for joy-ful weddings as well as saying goodbye to loved ones by spreading their ashes at sea. Many corporate groups and other organizations have chartered the Relentless as a part of their busi-ness convention here along The Emerald Coast. Custom catered menus, beverages and special requests can be provided by the Relentless for all occasions. These kinds of gatherings are quite popular since the captain, crew and staff are able to take care of absolutely everything you may need. Corporate cruises, weddings, anniversaries and birthdays aboard the Relentless provide guests with gracious hospitality in a unique setting. Guests can eat great food, enjoy cocktails, watch the dolphins play and view the famed, spectacular sunsets over water that Destin of-
fers almost year round. Charters for the Relentless are a flat rate of $200 per hour which includes up to six passengers. Each additional guest after six is charged an additional 10% of the base rate each. Obviously, larger groups pay less for added value, so “the more, the merrier!” Reservations and informa-tion about catered affairs for special events is avail-able at their website, relentlesscharterfishing.com or by calling 850.837.6541.

Our story opens with our hero sitting for decades, long forgotten in the woods, rusting quietly, with the trees growing up through it as it’s only companion. We built skis to slide it out of the snowy woods. There was an old stone wall that had to be taken carefully disassembled and then reassembled just so we could recover it. The nonexistantand roof was the only large bit needing to be replaced.
Purchased for a dollar from the intrepid Ms. Mary; a 91 year old firecracker of a woman who rode inthe car as a baby and is still driving today, this local car had been in the town for decades. Restorer Roger’s parents rode in this car in the 40’s , and a neighbor was taken to the

hospital to give birth to her only child, a girl, also in the 40’s. The mother is still alive and advised Roger as to where the car sat had been set to rest, in the woods .The project isn’t complete. This is a primer coat and there are plans for the Rumble seat in the back. Notice on the tail lights a foot

A senior citizen drove his brand new Porsche 911 4S convertible out of the car saleroom. Taking off down the motorway, he floored it to 90 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. ‘Amazing!’ he thought as he flew down the I-10, enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring.’ I can get away from him - no problem!’ thought the elderly gent as he floored it to 110 mph, then 120, then 130 mph. Suddenly, he thought, ‘What on earth am I doing? I’m too old for this nonsense!’ So he pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the police car to catch up with him. Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked up to the driver’s side of the 911, looked at his watch and said, ‘Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I’m taking off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you go.’ The man looked very seriously
at the policeman and replied, ‘Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back.’ ‘Have a good day, Sir,’ said the policeman.
An old man and woman were married for years even though they hated each other. When they had a confrontation, screams and yelling could be heard deep into the night. A constant statement was heard by the neighbors who feared the man the most. “When I die I will dig my way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!” They believed he practiced black magic and was responsible for missing cats and dogs, and strange sounds at all hours. He was feared and enjoyed the respect it garnished. He died abruptly under strange circumstances and the funeral had a closed casket. After the burial, the wife went straight to the local bar and began to party as if there was no tomorrow. The gaiety of her actions were becoming extreme while her neighbors approached in a group to ask these questions: Are you not afraid? Concerned? Worried? that this man who practiced black magic and stated when he died he would dig his way up and out of the grave to come back and haunt you for the rest of your life? The wife put down her drink and said...”let the old fool dig. I had him buried upside down.”
