Columbiana County FairLISBON — Whether it’ s late
July or early August, theColumbiana County Fair seemsto draw residents fromColumbiana and surroundingcounties out of the air condi-tioning and into the summerheat.
While walking through theheat, fairgoers are treated to thesmell of freshly deep friedfrench fries and corndogs, thesweet aroma of cotton candyand just-dipped caramel apples. All of these smells mingle withthe daily sights of animalshows, musical performances, derbies, tractor pulls, anddelighted screams of Ferriswheel riders.
The rich history of theColumbiana County Fair beganin 1845 when county residentsjoined together to promoteinterest in scientific farmingpractices, creating theColumbiana County Agricul-tural Society. With the societyin place, the first county fairwas held in a vacant lot adja-cent to Lisbon’ s planing mill, across from Thomas and SonsPottery on East WashingtonStreet.
After six years of operation, the society was reorganized andtwo years later, in 1853, thecurrent grounds, on the northend of town, were purchasedfrom John McClymonds. Sincethat time, the grounds haveexpanded from the small parcelon Lee Avenue, stretching toand across Saltwell Road.
When the fairgrounds firstopened in 1853, it featured ahalf-mile racetrack, somebuildings and fences. As thegrounds grew, so did the num-ber of buildings with the cur-rent number over 20, includinga restaurant, a permanent FFAconcession stand and cafeteria-style eatery.
Other buildings include adairy milking parlor, a speedbarn, Items of Yesteryear, threeshow stages, the historic colise-um, multi-purpose beef com-plex, the Rabbit/Turkey/PoultryBarn, and the all new Grand-stand.
Each year since 1853, thewooden-style Grandstandserved as the venue for the everpopular demolition and com-bine derbies and tractor pulls.Fans and fairgoers alikeflocked to the seats to witnessthese events with great excite-ment and enthusiasm. Thecombine derbies have been sobeloved that it became the sub-ject of an hour-long documen-tary called “Country Crush”,which aired on PBS in 2010.
The grandstand also fea-tured other events like tufftruck competitions, auto thrillshows, circuses, the John Oliv-er hot air baloon exhibition, andostrich races.
Live music also proves to bea big draw each year. Perform-ers like Dolly Parton, PorterWaggoner, Tanya Tucker, TexRitter, Lorrie Morgan, JakeOwen, Chuck Wicks, Confed-erate Railroad, and local artistZach Paxson have taken thestage over the years.
Despite the storied historyof the Grandstand, consideredto many as one of the oldeststanding structures of its type, age took a toll on the structureand the grandstand was demol-ished Dec. 2013.
The 2014 fair will featurean all-new grandstand, a metalstructure which will seat 2,400,close to 1,000 more than theold structure, and will covermore space than the old struc-ture. Construction will takeplace in the spring and will beready as the fair opens July 28.
The grandstand will be the
latest change to the fair sincethe new rabbit barn two yearsago. However, not even thechanges can take away fromother historic charms of thefair, including the coliseum andthe fair office.
For many years, the colise-um served as the central pointfor 4-H members and familiesand has hosted the annual 4-Hdance and Beef and Dairy Auc-tion among many events. Thecoliseum shares hosting dutieswith the beef complex.
As for the Fair Office, locat-ed at Gate A off Lee Avenue, itis housed in a historic train sta-tion, moved from its originallocation in downtown Lisbon.
After 168 years of opera-tion, the fair board continues itsdrive to improve the fair foryears to come. So as the sayinggoes, “Wheel On Down” to theColumbiana County Fair July28 through Aug. 3 for food, rides, music, and the best inagriculture Columbiana Countyhas to offer.

SALEM — Celebrating the artfound in the often whimsical andcharming illustrations of chil-dren’ s books, the Salem Story-book Museum is home to bothoriginal and limited editions.
One of the founders of themuseum, Elizabeth Thatcherbelieves the illustrations in chil-dren’ s storybooks were once dis-missed as only “pretty pictures,”but in recent decades havebecome more of an art form.
A visit to the collection cur-rently housed in the Kent StateCity Center building on NorthLincoln Avenue leaves littledoubt she is right. The illustratedfaces of children, the colorfulcharacters of childhood and thevarious mediums used to createthe fantastic places only a chil-dren’ s picture book can take thereader could only be works of art.Robert Viencek, a former direc-tor of the museum points out theSalem Storybook Museum is oneof only four such teaching muse-ums nationwide.
The Salem Storybook Muse-um has also hosted various writ-ers and illustrators, who have
come to speak to students at theSalem City Schools. The eventusually includes a book signingevent at either the Salem Campusfor Kent State University or at themuseum itself.
The museum is currentlyhoused in the Kent State SalemCity Center, North LincolnAvenue, and will eventually belocated in a Victorian house, cur-rently being renovated at the cor-ner of Fifth Street and North Lin-coln Avenue. Fundraiser are heldthroughout the year to help aidthe restoration. Currently, KentState City Center is not open onthe weekends and until the reno-vations to the Victorian house arecomplete, visitors interested incoming to the museum shouldcontact Thatcher at 337-7212 orViencek 332-4723 to makearrangements.
The museum also hosts anumber of programs each year, which are often announced in thecalendar of the local newspapers.Groups are welcome to the facili-ty during the work week and spe-cial programs can be created tomeet the needs of a group.

Lisbon Stone House MuseumLISBON — A pair of old buildings
standing on the village’ s south side pro-vides a pathway to the past filled withrelics for visitors to see.
The Lisbon Stone House and Train Sta-tion serve as the museum for the LisbonHistorical Society. The two buildings havebeen standing for well over a 300 yearscombined.
The stone house was constructedbetween 1804 and 1805 by ChristianSmith, and the land was given to him byLewis Kinney, the village’ s founder, museum curator Gene Krotky said.
Smith used the building as both hishome and as a place where travelers couldfind food and bedding. The location of thetavern along Washington Street is becauseit was the original main street in Lisbon, not Lincoln Way, which now serves thatpurpose, Krotky said.
Sandstone used to build the house wasquarried just west of Lisbon, and in its ear-ly days, the building served as a home, atavern, a court and a church.”The housewas pretty much in continuous use fromthe time it was built until the early 1940s,”she explained.
At that point, the village wanted to tearit down, as soldiers were returning homefrom World War II, cars were becomingmore common and parking in the down-town area was scarce.
But the society, along with a womannamed Ollie Rogers and four others, wereable to acquire the building for the soci-ety’ s use.
Over its early years, people made sever-al additions to the house, but the societyremoved them and restored it to its originalstate. Krotky said the house now serves asa display of what a normal home in Lisbonmay have looked like prior to the CivilWar.
The other building, a Victorian Railroadstation, was built in the 1880s. About acentury after its construction, Conrail, which had bought the station and theattached tracks, decided to get rid of all itsproperty. That included the station, and thecompany donated it to the society.
But ridding the company of the build-ing meant it had to be moved, which thehistorical society did, in 1986, from its
original Maple Street home to its currentlocation on Washington Street.
The first floor of the station containsdisplays of the village’ s history.”The pur-pose of the displays there is for the educa-tional, business and cultural history of Lis-bon,” Krotky explained.
One exhibit will take visitors back toold Shelton’ s Grove, which sits along thebottom of the ski slope on state Route 45and was the site of many picnics and recre-ational activities for village churches andfraternal organizations in decades past. Theold railroad ran along the creek at the bor-der of the grove, she explained, giving thestation a historical tie to the grove.
Betty Bailey, Marjory Winn and BobWinn, who now live in the grove, donatedinformation, pictures and several artifacts, like buttons and old coins, that have beendropped there over the years.
“The kind of things a person would belikely to drop at a picnic,” Krotkydescribed the items.
The lower level of the building serves
as a small office and storage space for thesociety.
Other items on display at the buildingsinclude a bookcase used in the law officeof Edwin M. Stanton, President AbrahamLincoln’ s secretary of war; a mail deliverybuggy with life-size horse, and an ironstove made in the 1800s at an early ironblast furnace west of Lisbon.
Both buildings are open for tours, butvisitors are asked to come to the train sta-tion because the other building remainslocked if no one is touring it. During thosehours, members of the Historical Societycan also answer questions about genealogyand provide information about buildings inthe village, for research papers or for otherreasons.
The society is always looking for newmembers, Krotky said, and anyone inter-ested in signing up can call 330-424-9000and leave a message with their name andphone number. More information on thesociety is also available at its websitewww.lisbonhistory.org.

With the proper hearing aids, hearing is less tiring and more
pleasant and those around you will
appreciate not having to repeat so mu ch!
Evelyn Jon es, Presid en t State Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist
Dear Evelyn, I was a hard sell for my hearing aids. You called me for 10 years. Inviting me in for hearing tests & I went
because they were free. I was keeping track of my loss, in denial, but keeping track, Nov. 2012 came and I finally was ready to buy. I could kick myself for not buying 10 years ago, when I was working. I could have had them paid for. Now I am retired and struggling to get by; but I can hear again - my wife, birds, grandchildren and its truly
wonderful. If I can give any advice - don’t be stubborn. If you need hearing aids get them
before more damage is done. After all they are your ears.

EAST LIVERPOOL —When pottery was king, thekings of pottery lived inimposing homes outfitted withall the amenities, and theabode of pottery magnate Cas-sius C. Thompson was noexception.
The C.C. Thompson Pot-tery operated on River Road(near the current BroadwayWharf), with a portion of thatbrick building still standing.
The Italianate style homewas built by Thompson in1876, a “pattern house,”which was built from a patternbought by the family whichthen chose how the interiorwould be finished. The EastLiverpool Historical Societywhich now owns the home.
The three-story home origi-nally fronted on Third Streetbut when the large porch wasadded in 1900, the familyused 300 Walnut St. as itsaddress.
Only the Thompson familyever lived in the grand home. After C.C. Thompson died, hiswife and three children contin-ued to reside there, and his son,Dale, lived there his entire lifebut never had any children.
When the new four-lanehighway was built in the1970s, Dale Thompson made
provisions for the house tobecome property of the histori-cal society upon his death andthat of his wife.
He established a trust fundto maintain the home.
Customary to affluent fami-lies of the time, the Thomp-sons had servants but no live-in help.
Today, restored to its Victo-rian-era splendor, the home isopen for tours, featuring fur-nishings once used by theThompsons and family memo-rabilia.
Many of C.C. Thompson’ sfamily members lived acrossThird Street which is nowunderneath the highwaybridge, but as their seven Vic-torian homes were sold one byone, parts would be relocatedto the Thompson mansion.
For this reason, some fea-tures of the restored home maynot be original to the house, but most of the furnishingswere used by the C.C. Thomp-son family.
The house is decorated foreach season, including Christ-mas, and a collection of DavidBlythe paintings featuring por-traits of early East Liverpoolcitizens are on display at alltimes on a rotating basis asthey are restored.
Adding to the home’ s ele-gance is a stone wall, wroughtiron fence and gates that sur-round the property.
Thompson House is listedon the National Register ofHistorical Places.
The home is open for tours
during the Tri-State PotteryFestival and over the Christ-mas season, with other toursavailable by appointment, which can be arranged by call-ing historical society PresidentTim Brookes at 386-5964 athis law offices.

EAST PALESTINE – Theold log house that greets visi-tors to East Palestine comingin from the west contains var-ious treasures and keys to thevillage’ s founding days, butthe most historic thing of allmay be the building itself.
The log house was con-structed around 1840 andowned by the East PalestineArea Historical Society, which uses it as a museumand a center of operations. The society was formed in1974.
According to the society, one of the earliest residents ofthe house was Dr. RobertChamberlain, who moved tothe county at the age of 20and established East Pales-tine’ s first medical practice, which lasted 30 years.
Chamberlain was also asurveyor for the Ohio andPennsylvania Railroad, estab-lished the first store in townand became the first postmas-ter after the post office wasestablished in 1836.
While the house now over-looks Village Park, its origi-nal home was 65 MeadowLane, which is now the cor-ner of West Main and Walnutstreets. According to the soci-ety, the house was first
moved up the street some-time between 1876 and1886 and it was ultimatelymoved, log-by-log, to its cur-rent location at 555 BaconAvenue in 1979.
Items on display in themuseum’ s two floors andbasement come from theperiod between 1890 and1930 and have some ties tothe village, although a fewwere included for their histor-ical value.
The first floor is decoratedin quite a cozy fashion withpaintings by local artistshanging above the fireplaceand glass cases displayingclassic pieces from local pot-teries. One item that standsout against the traditional liv-ing room environment is apeanut cart once used by ArtBlower, who made a livingselling peanuts in East Pales-tine for 50 years.
On the second floor are afew racks of military uni-forms dating back to theAmerican Civil War anddresses from eras past, alldonated by locals, and in thebasement are a variety of coalmining and constructionstools, including a woodenmallet used to construct thehouse itself.
The log house is believedto be the first museum ever inthe village and draws atten-tion from local residents andtravelers.
In addition to running themuseum, the society alsohelps people who had ances-tors in the village with gene-ology requests. Society mem-bers make and sell apple but-ter annually in the month ofOctober, in addition to othersmall fund raisers throughoutthe year.
East Palestine Mayor andsociety member Margo Zuchdescribed the society as a“group of friends that happento have the same interest.”
The society lost its presi-dent at the end of 2013 withthe passing of Dan Boggs.
“We lost a man that had awealth of knowledge on allthings historical and antique. He was a driving force. Hekept the rest of us moving,”she said.

LISBON —Nestled in thewoods of Columbiana County, following the tracks of the for-mer Erie Lackawanna Rail-road, is the Little Beaver CreekGreenway Trail. Offered alongthe way is 11 miles of scenicviews from a paved 10-foot-wide trail traveling from Lis-bon to Leetonia.
Riders or walkers can rest atthe historic Centennial Cov-ered Bridge, the Shelton’ sGrove Ticket Station, or at oneof the picnic areas located atone mile intervales. Alsoprominently featured is LittleBeaver Creek, one of Ohio’ snationally designated scenicrivers. The creek flows serene-ly along the trail, althoughheavy rains in 2004 causedmajor damage to the trail. Dur-ing the flooding county engi-neers discovered a 30-footdeep washout near the Centen-nial Covered Bridge. The dam-age was repaired soon after theflooding with riders once againable to travel the 11 miles.
Once ending at state Route344 in Leetonia, the trail nowtravels into Washingtonvilleand is scheduled to be extend-ed across state Route 14.
Ideas for the trail began in1990 when a hiking trail fromdowntown Leetonia to the
Cherry Valley Area was pro-posed. As talks progressed,John Roose of the LeetoniaParks Department approachedAllen Dickey to donate his 10miles of the former railroad, which he did. The final mile orso was donated by variousindividuals and organizations, including Richard Williams, the Boy Scouts, Conrail Corp.and Jim Hill. Of the 11 milesoriginally sought, all butaround 300 feet owned byStephen Corffee, wereacquired. The portion ownedby Corffee was redirectedalong St. Jacob’ s-LogtownRoad. These chunks of landwere sold over to theColumbiana County Park Dis-trict, which became the localsponsoring agency in 1992,throughout the years.
With negotiations stillunderway, the park districtheld a “Pulling of the GoldenSpike” ground breaking cere-mony in 1994. It would takeanother six years for the trail tobe completed with constructionceasing on June 30, 2000.Riders could officially take tothe trail on Sept. 15, 2000when the ribbon cutting anddedication of the Little BeaverCreek Greenway Trail, AllenDickey Branch, was held.
Since it opened, the GreenwayTrail continues to draw ridersand walkers from areas nearand far.
A map of the trail is avail-able at www.bicycletrail.com.
Parking is offered at theselocations:

Wellsville River MuseumWELLSVILLE — Situated near the bank
of the Ohio River is a 19th century homefull of history.
The home, located at 1003 RiversideAve., was once home to Dr. John Ham-mond, a noted surgeon and namesake to alocal park. Constructed in 1870, the buildingwas used for Hammond’ s medical practiceand as the family home. Following his deathin 1920, the home was converted to apart-ments until the early 1940s and then it wastransformed into a nursing home. From themid 1960s until the 1970s the home stoodvacant, until several volunteers along withthe Wellsville Historical Society decided topreserve the village and area’ s history, creat-ing the River Museum.
The home boasts three stories and 11rooms, each with a different theme fromCivil War artifacts to railroad items.Amongst the memorable are displays oflocal pottery ware, and the original deathmask of “Pretty Boy” Floyd.
“This (museum) really is a hidden secrethere in the valley,” said volunteer and for-
mer museum president Robert Beresford.A letter from President Abraham Lin-
coln, who visited the area on a campaignstop, a sword once owned by Gen. JohnMorgan and several Native American arti-facts greet visitors in the Civil War Room.
Dedicated not only to the area’ s history, the museum’ s second floor focuses on thehistory of Wellsville.
“Wellsville was once a city, and duringthat time three major factors played into theits development, the river the rail and thepottery. The second floor features a roomdedicated to each of those things,” saidBeresford.
In addition to the three rooms upstairs, the museum also boasts a Wellsville room, which displays some of the village’ s arti-facts including items from the fire depart-ment. Toys, clothing, and furniture decoratea third story bedroom.
The River Museum is open 1-4:30 p.m.June through August. No admission fee ischarged, but donations are accepted. Tours, which give an extensive history of the home

Columbiana Log House MuseumCOLUMBIANA — The His-
torical Society of Columbiana-Fairfield Township is proud toreach a 60-year milestone andNora Salmen said the Societywill continue their founders’vision to preserve local history.
Salmen is curator of the LogHouse Museum, located on theSquare in Columbiana. Thehouse was constructed in the1920s — more than 30 yearsbefore the creation of the socie-ty, and donated in 1975 by theBarrow family to the Log CabinCommittee.
“The goal of having a muse-um was realized with the estab-lishment of the Log HouseMuseum,” she said. “The mem-bers have been a vital part ofmaintaining and improving themuseum and meeting the needsof the Society with their work, interest and support.”
The Society uses the muse-um as a meeting place andmuseum. An annex was addedon in 1978, and features a widevariety of items, including a cen-tral display that changes everyfew years.
The remainder of the muse-um showcases military itemsand uniforms from the CivilWar, World War I and WorldWar II, pottery manufactured inColumbiana, dolls, furniture and10,000-year-old mastadonbones found at Firestone Farms.
The origin of the Societydates back to early 1953, whenColumbiana Ledger EditorWayne Paulson and business-man Roy Guy met to discuss thepossibility of organizing a histor-ical society, Salmen said.
The first public meeting wascalled on Aug. 24, 1953, with34 in attendance.
According to Salmen, thepurpose was to preserveColumbiana and Fairfield Town-ship history and ultimately tohave a museum where docu-ments, papers, mementos andartifacts would be displayed andpreserved.
The Log House Museum isopen June, July and August onFridays and Saturdays from 2-4p.m. and for events taking placein Columbiana. Special tours canbe arranged by calling 330-482-2983.

Burchfield Homestead MuseumSALEM —Opening on Aug. 13, 1999, the
Burchfield Homestead Museum, memorial-izes not only painter Charles Burchfield, butthe Salem of old. Prior to its opening in April,1999, the home was listed on National Regis-ter of Historical Places.
Burchfield grew up on Salem’ s EastFourth Street from ages 5-28. It was duringthis time that he discovered his love of paint-ing, using the views from his windows. Theseworks include paintings of the building’ sdowntown, the homes that lined his streets andnature that surrounded Salem. Paintings evendepict the people in his seven-member familyliving in his childhood home.
As museum visitors stroll through thehome and peer out its windows, they can stillsee what Burchfield saw and painted in someof his early watercolors.
Burchfield shows these family and earlySalem images in a well-celebrated fantasystyle. In some ways, the town has not changedall that much since those days when Burch-field was learning to put his brush into paints
and create masterpieces. The Burchfield Homestead Society is con-
tinuously working to renovate the Burchfieldhome to how it was when the painter livedthere in about 1917, the year he reportedlypainted about 400 paintings. Society membersworked from a floor plan drawn by Burchfieldthat was housed at the Burchfield-Penney ArtCenter in Buffalo, N.Y.
The restoration also included replicatingthe 1913 garden Burchfield described in hisjournals.
Along with restoring the home to its 1917splendor, the society replicated Currently, themuseum features over 80 paintings and some40 family photographs. Also in August 2000.
Tours are 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sun-days from mid-May until the end of August. Itis located at 867 E. Fourth St. Admission isfree, but donations are always welcome.
