CHANDIGARH, Oct 25:

In a sudden move, Punjabpolice chief Sumedh Singh Sainiwas today shunted out by theState Government which isunder intense attack over han-dling of the situation arising outof desecretion of Sikh holy bookeven protests over the issue wereon the decline.

Suresh Arora, a 1982-batchIPS officer who was serving asChief Director of VigilanceBureau, was appointed as the newDirector General of Police inplace of Saini who was shifted asDirector Housing Corporation, anofficial spokesman said.

Arora had played a crucialrole in fighting terrorism andwas posted as the SP(Headquarters), Amritsar, duringOperation Black Thunder I, andas SSP Amritsar at the time ofOperation Black Thunder II.

Saini was believed to beclose to Chief MinisterParkash Singh Badal andDeputy Chief Minister SukhbirSingh Badal and Congress andmost of the Sikh organisationswere against his holding thepost of the DGP.

The change at the top level inpolice was made amidst intenseattack by opposition on theSAD-BJP Government over its

handling of the situation thatdeveloped after incidents of sac-rilege in various parts of theState, during which two personswere killed when police openedfire.

Meanwhile, the ‘Bhog’ (cul-mination) of ‘Akhand Path’(continuous recitation of reli-gious hymns) of the two personskilled allegedly in police firingat Behbal Kalan in Faridkot dis-

trict passed off peacefully today.Protests by Sikh organisa-

tions, including hardliners, werealso declining and getting limit-ed to village roads. Majority ofnational highways and statehighways saw normal move-ment of traffic, police said.(PTI)
