SWOT Analysis President David
Members enjoy the evening
President’s (and others) Announcements:
• Carmel reported that 6 Rotarians attended the come and try day for Dream Cricket at Sale Specialist
School: Adrian, Rod, David T., Lyndon, Neil and Carmel. It was a great morning and we now await
further advice as to whether the project will continue.
• President Elect Jeanette reported on a positive PETS meeting in Ballarat with 230 in attendance as
preparation for her year in office.
• President David announced a special general meeting to be held on the 23rd April to discuss a
possible merger with Sale Central. Below is a summary as prepared by Lyndon.
Dear All
Attached for your reading over Easter is my little paper on the possible merger, based on our discussions the other night and some feedback since. It is in Excel but, if you can't read it,
let me know and I will send it in another format. I do not claim it to be exhaustive and so provision is made for you to note other thoughts which may occur to you as you read it.
Much of the feedback has been along the lines of "hasten slowly" with recommendations of
perhaps a six-month period of joint activity and meetings. Another couple of comments were along the lines that, although things have changed, with
governments, schools and other bodies taking on many aspects of the social need previously addressed by Rotary, there is still much that can and needs to be done in the line of community humanity service.
Much food for thought Have a lovely Easter

ISSUE STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES OPPORTUNITIES THREATS
NUMBERS Would provide more like a
"critical mass" - eg more
opportunity for active members
and committees
May lose some of the
cameraderie of the present
small memberships
May attract more members
due to a larger, more active
Club
May create more energy and
enthusiasm
May lose some members - ie
some may not wish to be part
of a merged Club (for various
reasons) and thus less
Rotarians in town. Need to
guard against complacency that
the merger fixes membership
numbers problem
MATURITY and
EXPERIENCE
Both Clubs would contribute a
lot from existing Members.
Strong mentoring available for
new members
"Cross fertilisation" could
benefit the Club and its
activities/objectives
Could lose some experience if
some members do not wish to
"come on board"
CLUB IDENTITY Less public confusion with one
Club
One Club (or both, depending
on chosen name) would lose
identity
Publicity easier for one Club Some members may resent the
loss of their Club's identity and
not "come on board"
CULTURAL
INTEGRATION
Can be a strong outcome if
Members accept and are
committed to the change
Some members may feel a
sense of incompatabilty
between members and areas of
focus of the two merging Clubs
Members would be able to be
involved in a wider range of
activities
A merged Club may not
support all the culture of the
present Clubs - some areas of
focus have had a long-term
commitment
FINANCE Stronger Balance Sheet Only 1 Regional Grant available
instread of 2
May be able to pursue more
substantial projects
STATUS QUO "Ticking along OK as we are" Members ageing
Not attracting many new
members Not
engaging many younger new
members
Offers alternative meeting
nights to suit members'
circumstances.
Could expand on recent recent
joint projects/activities
Any continuing decline in
membership could threaten
Clubs' viability
ENTHUSIASM &
ENERGY
Greater "critical mass" Merger, of itself, will not
necessarily foster energy &
enthusiasm (e & e)
Merger, supported by a
positive program of activity
may lead to increased e & e
PROJECT ABILITY More person-power and
broader range of skills.
More capacity for hands-on
activities which will bolster
member enthusiasm
Increased potential for projects
and activities
Single Club may not tackle as
many activities or projects as
the two Clubs individually
FELLOWSHIP Broader range of Fellowship May lose some of the
cameraderie of the present
small memberships
Can broaden members'
networks and friendships
A larger Club may lead to
fragmentation or cliques
INFLEXIBILITY Members may find any change
of meeting night may not fit
with their other commitments
RECOGNITION OF
ROTARY
Could provide a "louder voice"
due to a larger Club
Could be less Rotary exposure
due to only one Club operating
More numbers in the Club
could allow a stronger publicity
team to promote Rotary
activities
GOALS, OBJECTIVES
and PURPOSE
Greater numbers would allow
more active Committees to
deliver on goals and objectives
Could end up with too many
objectives and thus spread too
thin
An opportunity to clearly define
our purpose
An opportunityto refresh and
refocus Rotary activities in Sale
Some existing goals and
objectives may not get over the
line
CLUB NAME The Rotary Club of Sale is the
original name and second
oldest in Victoria
Any other name would not
honour the history of the name
of our Club
Some may seek a completely
new name to avoid conflict
VENUE Not easy to find a cost-effective
venue to accommodate larger
numbers
An opportunity for a larger
venue

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)
What is RLI?
The Rotary Leadership Institute is an international network of Rotary and provides a series of fast-
paced, interactive, three one-day sessions designed to refine the leadership skills of Rotarians and
increase their knowledge of Rotary. The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) believes that excellent
club leadership is essential to the future of Rotary in a complex and fast changing world.
Courses are fun, topical, interactive, and geared towards the modern Rotarian’s busy schedule.
Who is the course for?
Most Rotarians have not been exposed to the great scope of Rotary around the world and may
have not considered what leadership skills are necessary to move Rotary forward. Rotary clubs
are encouraged to select several candidates each year for the RLI. Participants return to their
clubs with enthusiasm, new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as
Rotarians, and with the valuable skills for their potential leadership in the club.
Topics include:
❖ My Rotary World
❖ Creative Service Projects
❖ Analysing a Rotary Club
❖ Building a Stronger Club
❖ Club Communications
❖ Vocational Service - Ethics
❖ Leadership and Team Building
❖ Effective Leadership Strategies
❖ Membership - Attracting, engaging and retaining members.
❖ The Rotary Foundation
❖ International Service
❖ Public Image & Public Relations
❖ Making a Difference
Benefits of attending?
Some comments from previous District 9820 participants:
➢ “Very well-presented course with topical and relevant information and practical ways to improve
as a Rotarian”.
➢ “An enjoyable day of expanding knowledge of Rotary Leadership within Rotary”.
➢ “This is a valuable exercise I think for all board members and potential incoming board
members”.
➢ “All good value as a newer member to Rotary. An informative day”.
➢ “As with session one the information outlined in the current session was both highly beneficial
and valuable”.
➢ Great three days of learning and networking.
➢ Assisted in clarifying the complicated, cohesive range of activities and objectives with which
rotary in involved.
➢ The leadership training session has been a regarding experience. To hear and share ideas
from different perspectives and length of service. The level of workshops was excellent for this
session. Overall there should be more of this and I will encourage others to attend next year.
➢ Excellent presentations by all facilitators. Good pace and good topics covered for us to learn.
Very worthwhile experience
➢ A fantastic program which should become compulsory part of a member’s life in Rotary.
