Module2,Lesson1TheearthmovesInthisactivity,youwillobserveworldwidepatternsofseismicactivity(earthquakes)andvolcanicactivity(volcanoes).Youwillanalyzetherelationshipsofthosepatternstotectonicplateboundariesandmajorphysicalfeaturesoftheearth’ssurface.Thenyouwillidentifycitiesatrisk.Task1:Openthemap

1. Launchaninternetbrowser.a) Gotothislink:

2. ClickontheModifyMapbuttononthetoprightcorneraboveyourmap.

5. TurnoffVolcanoessothatonlyEarthquakesareshowingonthemap.

Thepointsshowthelocationsofearthquakesthatoccurredin2004through2007andwereamagnitudeof5.7orover.

Task3:SortandanalyzeearthquakemagnitudesYoucantakeacloserlookatthedatabehindthedotsbylookingattheattributetableoftheEarthquakeslayer.Anattributetablecontainsspecificinformationaboutthefeaturesinalayer.IntheEarthquakeslayer,eachpointrepresentsanearthquakewithamagnitudeof5.7orgreaterontheRichterscale.Youwillfocusonthe20strongestearthquakes.

6. Inthetableofcontents,hoverovertheEarthquakesmagnitude5.7+(2004-2007)layer,clickontheShowTablebutton.

Youseetheattributedataassociatedwiththeorangeearthquakepointsonthemap.

7. Scrolldowntoreviewtherecords.Remember,eachrecordinthistablerepresentsonepointonthemap.

Nowyouwillputthemagnitudesinorderfromlargesttosmallest.

8. Clickthefield(columnheading)labeledMAGNITUDE.ThisfieldrepresentsthemagnitudeoftheearthquakesandaSortAscending/SortDescendingboxwillappear.ClickonSortDescending.

Therecordsarenowarrangedfromlargesttosmallestandyouwillselectthe20largestearthquakesfromthelist.

9. Clickontherecordthatisthefirstinthelist.Whiledepressingtheshiftkey,clickoneachrowuntilyougettothetwentiethrecord.Youmayneedtohitthedownarrowofyourkeyboardtoseemorerowstoclick.Notethattherearenowearthquakeshighlightedinblueonyourmap.

Tomakesureyouhavehighlighted20earthquakes,lookatthestatusbaratthetopofthetable.Itshouldlooklikethefollowinggraphic:

• Divergentboundary.Oneortwoplatesaresplittingapart.Newcrustisbeingformedfromthecenteroftheearth,causingtheplatetospread.Riftvalleysareoneexampleofthistypeofplatemovement.

• Convergentboundary.Twoplatesarecolliding,forcingoneplatetodipdownunderneathanotherone.Theplatethatisfoldingunderhasoldcrustthatisbeingdestroyed,whiletheplateontophasmountainsandvolcanoesbeingformed.Intheocean,theseappearastrenches.

• Transformboundary.Platesareslidingagainsteachother,causinglargefaultlinesandmountainstoform.Here,thecrustisneithercreatednordestroyed.

• Plateboundaryzones(zigzagged).Plateboundariesappearerratic(zigzagged).Scientistsbelievetherearemicroplatesintheseareas,butitisunclearwhateffecttheyhaveonthephysicalenvironment.
