Mobile technologies are great for:• Engaging and motivating learners• Helping to overcome the digital divide• enabling technological support for learning
in normal learning locations inc. classrooms• supporting learners at work and on trips• Collecting evidence & assessment• maintaining a supportive dialogue learners
regardless of their location • independent and collaborative learning• Personalisation and differentiation

But it is essential to have:• Adequate staff development and support• Co-operative and supportive IT staff• Time for staff to experiment, plan and
become confident• An understanding that there is no one-size-
fits-all solution• Appropriate pedagogy and materials - not
just the same old squeezed smaller

Challenges• Lots of technical issues• Procurement & services contract issues• Steep learning curve for most staff• Some myths to overcome -won’t work with
LLDD learners or for my subject, it will get lost/stolen/encourage behaviour problems
• IT dept restrictions problems • Getting enough staff time for training and
familiarisation leading to confidence• Employer engagement and agreement issues

• 70% thought using mobile technology helped them to learn (and 22% maybe)
• 60% -made learning more interesting (33% sometimes)
• 78% - helped to learn in different places• 75% - helped to learn at different times• 84% would like to use mobile technology for
learning in the future
(28% mobile learning for > 3 months, 53% one to three months, 18% for less than one month)
