LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING (Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10)

A reading from the book of IsaiahThe Lord spoke to Ahaz and said, ‘Ask the Lord your God for a sign for yourself

coming either from the depths of Sheol or from the heights above.’ ‘No,’ Ahaz answered, ‘I will not put the Lord to the test.’

Then Isaiah said: Listen now, House of David: are you not satisfied with trying the patience of men without trying the patience of my God, too? The Lord himself, therefore, I will give you a sign. It is this: the maiden is with child and will soon give birth to a son whom she will call Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God-with-us’.The word of the Lord.

The Word of the Lord.

All : Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM

MY HEART’S THANKSGIVING (Psalm 8)REFRAIN:

As I sing my heart’s thanksgiving and my eyes look heavenward, how the stars you flung like jewels bid your welcome, shine your light.

As I marvel at your moonrise, I’m in awe yet I ask, “what am I that you should love me, and hold me as your dearest

love of all?”

1. You crown me with honor and glory, and you set all things under my feet. You have made me a little less than angels, even if I fly often away.

2. In my anxious and browbeaten moments, you comfort me, fill me with peace. When my foes threaten, dare, and surround me, you’re my strength,

you’re my life and my shield.

3. How exulted your name is, O Yahweh, and how lofty the work of your hands. Yet how closely, how dearly, you draw me to your love, your divine majesty.

SECOND READING

A reading from the letter to the Hebrews

Bulls’ blood and goats’ blood are useless for taking away sins, and this is what Christ said, on coming into the world:

You who wanted no sacrifice or oblation, prepared a body for me. You took no pleasure in holocausts or sacrifices for sin; then I said, just as I was commanded in the scroll of the book, ‘God, here I am! I am coming to obey your will.’

Notice that he says first: You did not want what the Law lays down as the things to be offered, that is: the sacrifices, the oblations, the holocausts and sacrifices for sin,

4

Page 5: Missalete for Priest(09-10)

and you took no pleasure in them; and then he says: Here I am! I am coming to obey your will. He is abolishing the first sort to replace it with the second. And this will was for us to be made holy by the offering of his body made once and for all by Jesus Christ.

The Word of the Lord.

All : Thanks be to God.

COMMENTATOR: Please stand to honor the Gospel

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

EGO SUM

Ego sum resurrectio et vita, dicit Dominus (2x)Qui credit in me non morietur in aeter—num.

Priest : The Lord be with You! All : And also with you!

Priest : A proclamation of the Gospel according to Luke.

All : Glory to You, O Lord.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?”And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of

the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.

And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

Priest : Father, you are Holy indeed, and all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness comes from you through your

Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by the working of the Holy Spirit. From age to age you gather a people to yourself, so that from east to west a perfect offering may be made to the glory of your name.

8

Page 9: Missalete for Priest(09-10)

And so Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the

body and blood of your son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this Eucharist.

On the night He was betrayed, He took the bread and gave you thanks and praise, broke the bread, gave it to His disciples

and said: “TAKE THIS ALL OF YOU, AND EAT IT: THIS IS MY BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.”

When supper was ended, He took the cup. Again He gave you thanks and praise, gave the cup to His disciples and said:

TAKE THIS ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT: “THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING COVENANT. IT WILL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR ALL SO THAT SINS MAY BE FORGIVEN. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.”

Priest : The mystery of faith.

Commentator: Please stand.

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

When we eat this bread, and drink this cup,We proclaim your death Lord Jesus Christ,

until you come, until you come in glory!

Priest : Father, calling to mind the death of your Son endured for our salvation, His glorious resurrection and ascension into

heaven and ready to greet Him when He comes again, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.

Look with favor on your church’s offering and see the victim whose death has reconciled us to yourself. Grant that we, who are

nourished by his body and blood, may be filled with his Holy Spirit, and become one body, one spirit in Christ.

May He make us an everlasting gift to you and enable us to share in the inheritance of your saints, with Mary, the virgin Mother

of God; with all the apostles, the martyrs, and all your saints, on whose constant intercession we rely for help.

Lord, may this sacrifice, which has made our peace with you, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Strengthen

in faith and love your pilgrim Church on earth; your servant, Pope Benedict XVI, our Archbishop, LEONARDO and all the bishops, with the clergy and the entire people your Son has gained for you. Father, hear the prayers of the family you have gathered here before you. In mercy and love unite all your children wherever they may be. Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship. We hope to enjoy forever the vision of your glory, through Christ our Lord, from whom all good things come.

Through Him, with Him, and in Him in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, forever and ever.
