The 2014-2015 Annual Report
A Year of
Milestones
2 3
In 2015, we witnessed SquashWise’s first high school graduates walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. All of our remarkable graduates are currently enrolled in their freshman year of college, fulfilling the vision we had in 2008 when SquashWise began its journey to improve the opportunities for college access in Baltimore City. Several of the graduates are first generation college students. Hard work and dedication to our long-term program paid off for these students, who are poised for success as they enter into the next phase of their education and their lives.
Their hard work paid off, not only in their college acceptances and the nearly $400,000 in financial aid and scholarships they received, but also in their impressive senior years. In her last tournament as a SquashWise student, one graduate was victorious in the B level draw at the Urban Individual Championships at Amherst College, her first-ever tournament victory! She came off court after winning in five games and, with a mix of elation and relief, embraced our staff and
emphatically screamed, “Finally!” Her triumph was matched by another graduate who represented SquashWise at the National Urban Doubles Championship in Denver, Colorado. After initially being down two games in the finals, the team from SquashWise defeated one of the top teams in the tournament, to win SquashWise’s first-ever doubles championship.
Off the court, two graduates became the first SquashWise students to receive scholarships to the Citizenship Tour, a National Urban Squash and Education Association (NUSEA) initiative that tours the east coast, meeting with influential politicians and activists to learn what it means to be engaged citizens. A highlight of the tour was the stop in Baltimore when Congressman Elijah Cummings made his first visit to our home at Meadow Mill Athletic Club to meet students from SquashWise and the Citizenship Tour. Congressman Cummings was impressed by what he saw. He was quoted in The Baltimore Sun, saying, “To know that there’s an organization like this that truly cares

about young people, that introduces them to a sport and at the same time provides them with the tutoring and the guidance to walk into their destiny, that’s a win-win-win situation.”
We are filled with a sense of accom-plishment as a SquashWise family. Celebrating a year of firsts is inspiring. Our students, staff, parents, and Board of Directors are motivated to build on the legacy set by this incredible group of graduates; a group which demonstrated how impactful the combination of aca-demics, athletics, and opportunities is in a child’s life. Through years of tutoring and enrichment, college visits, and social
support, our students have prepared themselves to take what they learned with SquashWise and make their own futures, their own destinies. The gradu-ates move on to college prepared and confident, knowing that SquashWise will continue to support them.
It is with your invaluable support that these graduates and their younger teammates are able to access incredible opportunities that will set them on a firm path to success. We cannot thank you enough for your generosity and commitment to our family. We look forward to continuing to partner with you in our successes for many years to come.

Bridge EdU, a comprehensive first-year college program. Renard hopes to trans-fer to a four-year art school to pursue his love of digital art, media, and technology.
Nytiece Powell
Nytiece is a fresh-man at Frostburg State University studying Biology and Criminal Jus-tice. Nytiece is a first generation college student and is determined to graduate and give
back to his community. Last summer Nytiece participated in the Citizenship Tour. He traveled from New York City to Washington, DC and met with political and community leaders to discuss social justice and civil rights issues.

Darian has been our number one squash player for the past four years. He has more tournament wins than any other SquashWise student and a current national ranking of 105. Darian continues to train
for competition and coach for Squash-Wise while participating in Wes Moore’s Bridge EdU program.
Eryn Rich
Eryn has been awarded more finan-cial aid and scholar-ship money than all of our other students combined due to her self-advocacy and determination to obtain a meaningful and affordable edu-
cation. Eryn received college acceptances to the University of Baltimore, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Frostburg State University, Hood College, and McDaniel College. Eryn decided to attend McDaniel College, a selective liberal arts school, where she plans to study physical therapy.
Tayler St. Clair
Tayler joined SquashWise be-cause she wanted to travel and since then has competed in squash tourna-ments in Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Mas-
sachusetts, and Colorado. She earned academic summer scholarships to the Naval Academy, University of Rochester, and Phillips Exeter Academy. She also spent summers backpacking and camping through the Appalachians with Outward Bound and completed her third wilder-ness course this summer. Tayler attends Frostburg State University on a merit scholarship and plans to study veteri-nary medicine.
