MICROSOFTOFFICE EXCEL
Microsoft Excel 2007 It is a program used to create, format, and compute numbers. It displays datain row-and-column format. MS
Excel makes it easy to compute numbers andallows different ways to format data including charts and reports.
It is a very powerful electronic spreadsheet that lets the user enter and usenumerical data with formulas and built-in functions. It
consists of 16worksheets, 65536 rows, and 256 columns.A
Parts and Uses of the MS Excel Environment
1. Toolbars display commands that are commonly used for easy access
2. Name Box - displays the address of the active cell

5.Select all Button selects every cell in a worksheet
6.Sheet Tabs let you display worksheets in the open workbook
7. Row headers a number used to identify a row
8. Column headers a letter used to identify a column
9. Active cell the cell that has a thick border that will hold any data that you type or entered
10. Scroll bars includes vertical and horizontal scroll bar and four arrow used to move thescreen display horizontally or vertically
11. Title bar displays the program and the name of the workbook that you are currentlyusing
12. Menu bar (7 Tabs) lists the names of the menus or tabs in Excel
13. Minimize button minimizes the window to a button on the task bar
14. Maximize/Restore button switch between maximizing a window and restoring awindow to its previous size
Active Cell
In an Excel 2007worksheet, the cell with the black outline.Datais always entered into the active cell.
Column Letter
Columns run vertically on aworksheetand each one is identified by a letter in thecolumn header.
Formula Bar
Located above the worksheet, this area displays the contents of the active cell. It can also be used for entering o
editing data andformulas.
Name Box
Located next to the formula bar, the Name Box displays thecell referenceor the name of the active cell.
Row NumbersRows run horizontally in a worksheet and are identified by a number in therow header.
Together a column letter and a row number create acell reference. Each cell in the worksheet can be identified b
this combination of letters and numbers such as A1, F456, or AA34.
Sheet Tabs
By default there are three worksheets in an Excel file.
The tab at the bottom of a worksheet tells you the name of the worksheet - such as Sheet1, Sheet2 etc.
Switching between worksheets can be done by clicking on the tab of the sheet you wish to access.
Renaming a worksheetorchanging the tab colorcan make it easier to keep track of data in large spreadsheet file
Quick Access Toolbar
This customizable toolbar allows you to add frequently used commands. Click on the down arrow at the end of ttoolbar to display the available options.
Office Button
Clicking on the Office Button displays a drop down menu containing a number of options, such as open, save, an
print. The options in the Office Button menu are very similar to those found under the File menu in previous
versions of Excel.
Ribbon
The Ribbon is the strip of buttons and icons located above the work area in Excel 2007. The Ribbon replaces the
menus and toolbars found in earlier versions of Excel.

Microsoft originally marketed a spreadsheet program called Multiplan in 1982, which was very popular on CP/M
systems, but on MS-DOS systems it lost popularity to Lotus 1-2-3.
This promoted development of a new spreadsheet called Excel which started with the intention to 'do everythin
1-2-3 does and do it better'.
The first version of Excel was released for the Mac in 1985 and the first Windows version was released in
November 1987.
Lotus was slow to bring 1-2-3 to Windows and by 1988 Excel had started to outsell 1-2-3 and helped Microsoftachieve the position of leading PC software developer.
This accomplishment, dethroning the king of the software world, solidified Microsoft as a valid competitor and
showed its future of developing graphical software.
Microsoft pushed its advantage with regular new releases, every two years or so. The current version for the
Windows platform is Excel 11, also called Microsoft Office Excel 2003. The current version for the Mac OS X
platform is Microsoft Excel 2004.
Microsoft Excel is aspreadsheetapplicationdeveloped byMicrosoftforMicrosoft WindowsandMac OS X. It
features calculation, graphing tools, pivot tables, and a macro programming language calledVisual Basic for
Applications. It has been a very widely applied spreadsheet for these platforms, especially since version 5 in 1993
and it has replacedLotus 1-2-3as the industry standard for spreadsheets. Excel forms part ofMicrosoft Office. T
current versions are 2010 forMicrosoft Windows[1]
and 2011 forMac OS X.[2]
History
Excel 1.0, 1.5, 2.x
Microsoft originally marketed a spreadsheet program calledMultiplanin 1982. Multiplan became very popular o
CP/Msystems, but onMS-DOSsystems it lost popularity toLotus 1-2-3. Microsoft released the first version of Ex
for the Macintosh on 30 September 1985, and the first Windows version was 2.05 (to synchronize with the
Macintosh version 2.2) in November 1987.[48]
Lotus was slow to bring 1-2-3 to Windows and by 1988 Excel had
started to outsell 1-2-3 and helped Microsoft achieve the position of leading PC software developer. Thisaccomplishment, dethroning the king of the software world, solidified Microsoft as a valid competitor and show
its future of developingGUIsoftware. Microsoft pushed its advantage with regular new releases, every two year
or so.
Early in 1993 Excel became the target of a trademark lawsuit by another company already selling a software
package named "Excel" in thefinance industry. As the result of the dispute Microsoft had to refer to the program
as "Microsoft Excel" in all of its formal press releases and legal documents. However, over time this practice has
been ignored, and Microsoft cleared up the issue permanently when they purchased the trademark of the other
program.[citation needed]
Microsoft also encouraged the use of the letters XL as shorthand for the program[citation neede
while this is no longer common, the program'siconon Windows (before Excel 2013) still consists of a stylized
combination of the two letters, and thefile extensionof the default Excel format is .xls (.xlsxin newer versions).Excel offers manyuser interfacetweaks over the earliest electronic spreadsheets; however, the essence remains
the same as in the original spreadsheet software,VisiCalc: the program displays cells organized in rows and
columns, and each cell may contain data or a formula, with relative or absolute references to other cells.
Excel became the first spreadsheet to allow the user to define the appearance of spreadsheets (fonts, character
attributes and cell appearance). It also introduced intelligent cell recomputation, where only cells dependent on
the cell being modified are updated (previous spreadsheet programs recomputed everything all the time or wait
for a specific user command). Excel has extensive graphing capabilities, and enables users to performmail merge
From its first version Excel supported end user programming of macros (automation of repetitive tasks) and user
defined functions (extension of Excel's built-in function library). In early versions of Excel these programs were
written in a macro language whose statements had formula syntax and resided in the cells of special purpose

macro sheets (stored with file extension .XLM in Windows.) XLM was the default macro language for Excel throu
Excel 4.0.[49]
Beginning with version 5.0 Excel recorded macros in VBA by default but with version 5.0 XLM
recording was still allowed as an option. After version 5.0 that option has been discontinued. All versions of Exce
including Excel 2010 are capable of running an XLM macro, though Microsoft discourages their use.[50]
Excel 5.0
With version 5.0, Excel has includedVisual Basic for Applications(VBA), a programming language based onVisua
Basicwhich adds the ability to automate tasks in Excel and to provideuser-defined functions(UDF) for use in
worksheets. VBA is a powerful addition to the application and includes a fully featuredintegrated development
environment(IDE). Macro recording can produce VBA code replicating user actions, thus allowing simple
automation of regular tasks. VBA allows the creation of forms and in-worksheet controls to communicate with thuser. The language supports use (but not creation) ofActiveX (COM)DLL's; later versions add support for class
modules allowing the use of basicobject-oriented programmingtechniques.
The automation functionality provided by VBA made Excel a target formacroviruses. This caused serious proble
until antivirus products began to detect these viruses.Microsoftbelatedly took steps to prevent the misuse by
adding the ability to disable macros completely, to enable macros when opening a workbook or to trust all macr
signed using a trusted certificate.
Versions 5.0 to 9.0 of Excel contain variousEaster eggs, including a "Hall of Tortured Souls", although since
version 10Microsofthas taken measures to eliminate such undocumented features from their products.[51]
Excel 95
Internal rewrite to 32 bits. Almost no external changes, but faster and more stable.
Excel 97
Major upgrade. Introduced the paper clip office assistant. Standard VBA used instead of internal Excel Basic.
Includes now removed Natural Language labels.
Excel 2000
See also:Microsoft Office 2000
Minor upgrade. Clipboard can hold multiple objects at once. The Office Assistant, whose frequent unsolicited
appearance in Excel 97 had annoyed many users, became less intrusive.
Excel XP
Released about 2001. Very minor enhancements.
Excel 2003
Minor enhancements, most significant being the new Tables.Excel 2007
This release was a major upgrade from the previous version. Similar to other updated Office products, Excel in
2007 used the newRibbonmenu system. This is different from what users are used to, but the number of mouse
clicks needed to reach a given functionality is generally less (e.g., removing gridlines only required two mouse-
clicks instead of five). However, most business users agree that the replacement of the straightforward menu
system with the more convoluted ribbon dramatically reduces productivity.[52]
Also like other office products, theOffice Open XMLfile formats were introduced, including .xlsm for a workboo
with macros and .xlsxfor a workbook without macros.[53]
Specifically, many of the size limitations of previous versions were greatly increased. To illustrate, the number of
rows was now 1,048,576 (2
20
) and columns was 16,384 (2
14
; the far-right column is XFD). This changes what is avalidA1 reference versus a named range. Other features included an improved management of named variables
through the Name Manager, and much improved flexibility in formatting graphs, which now allow (x, y) coordina
labeling and lines of arbitrary weight. Several improvements to pivot tables were introduced. This version made
more extensive use of multiple cores for the calculation of spreadsheets; however, VBA macros are not handled
parallel and XLL add-ins were only executed in parallel if they werethread-safeand this was indicated at
registration.
Excel 2010
Minor enhancements,

Extra Chorus Lyrics: (Use Chorus Chords)
I won't give up on us
Even if the skies get dark
I'm healing this broken heart
And I know I'm worth it
I won't give up on us (no I'm not giving up)
God knows I'm tough, I am loved (I am tough, I am loved)
We've got a lot to learn (we're alive, we are loved)
God knows we're worth it (God knows we're worth it)
No, I won't give up on us (no I'm not giving up)
God knows I'm tough enough (I am tough, I am loved)
We've got a lot to learn (we're alive, we are loved)
And we're, and we're worth it (and we're worth it)
No, I won't give up
