SNHSA's Vision: To bring the joy of horse sports to as many people as possible.
2017 Issue #5 Sept. 23, 2017
Message from the President It is hard to believe we are nearly through the show year! As we head into fall and the
last few horse shows of the season, don't forget that SNHSA still has many exciting opportunities to learn and grow in our horsemanship, earn points towards year-end awards, and gain experience in Medal Finals, as well as team competitions for our jumper riders, giving our members a chance to shine at all levels of riding. Upcoming events include the SNHSA Hunter and Equitation weekend with the Junior/Amateur and Mini Medal Finals, the SNHSA Jumper weekend with the new JR/AM Jumper Challenge Cup Tournament, the Youth Committee Horsemanship quiz, and the Jeff Cook clinic. We hope that all of our members take advantage of these great opportunities, and we look forward to seeing you this fall!

2017 SNHSA Year-End Points Update
It's time to make sure you qualify for Year-End Awards! Check the points record
below to make sure the horse (for Hunter and Jumper divisions) or the rider (for
Equitation divisions) has at least 3 venues and at least 10 points. If there are any
questions or discrepancies, please email Susan Howe now at [email protected]
From the Rule Book, the rules pertaining to year-end points are as follows:
1. To be eligible for year-end awards in the Hunter or Jumper divisions, the horse must
accumulate 10 points and must participate in three (3) different venues.
2. To be eligible for year-end awards in the Equitation division, the rider must
accumulate 10 points and must participate in three (3) different venues.
3. To be eligible for year-end awards in the Walk-Trot division, the only qualifications
are that the rider must be a SNHSA member and must participate in three (3) different
venues. Criteria for year-end awards are based on points earned versus points
available. The rider earns 1 point for every Walk-Trot class he/she competes in.
If you don't have the required number of venues, there are two opportunities to
participate and qualify. Each upcoming Benefit show counts as a wild card venue! 1) SNHSA Hunter/Equitation Benefit Sept. 30 (at Franktown Meadows Equestrian
Facility)
2) SNHSA Jumper Benefit Oct. 21 (at Brownlee Equestrian)

UPCOMING EVENTS
Plan to participate! SNHSA JR/AM Challenge Cup Tournament
The first annual SNHSA JR/AM Challenge Cup Tournament will take place Sunday, Oct. 22, at Brownlee Equestrian, the day after the SNHSA Benefit show for Jumpers. SNHSA introduced the SNHSA JR/AM Challenge Cup Tournament this June. Now that the event is nearing, it's time to start planning your team! Riders must be SNHSA Junior or Amateur members in good standing. The SNHSA JR/AM Challenge Cup Tournament will be conducted under a prix de nations
format jumper competition. The jumper teams compete at two levels: 2'9" and 3'3". Teams must have one rider at each level. Teams consist of 3 riders and the final rider of the team may choose the level at which they compete. Horse/Rider combinations competing at 2'9" may not have competed in classes over 3'3" during the 2017 competition year. Each horse may only compete on one team. Teams of 2 will be permitted, but there will be no dropped score. Coordinating hunt coats, saddle pads, horse leg wear, etc. are encouraged for each team. Teams will ride the first round and be judged for time and penalties, with the top eight (8) teams returning for the second round. Each team must declare a Chef D'Equipe. Full rules and scoring details can be found on www.SNHSA.org.
If you are a SNHSA member but don't have a team, sign up and you'll be placed with others who don't have a readily available team! Teams can consist of riders/horses from several barns. The cost is $100 per horse. Team prizes will be awarded to each member of the 1st place team and ribbons to 8th place.

Kjartan's pawing pattern raises my attention! by Allison Brunelli
Kjartan's unrefined pawing behavior in Trailer Loading Lesson Four inspired a spontaneous
nickname: Hurricane Kjartan. He loaded, tied, stood calmly for a while, but then he pawed
with an ear-smacking power. He pawed with such force, he ultimately stripped the padded
liner away from the trailer wall. When Ashlin Bowen, our trainer from Breakaway Farms,
and I dropped the doors to unload him, the firm liner, once hanging vertically, lay at his feet in
a listless rubber heap.
That was Lesson Four but in Lesson Five, Kjartan made a comeback in the vein of a
valedictorian. He loaded easily, tied easily, hardly pawed. He even self-backed out the narrow
side opening using only the quiet aids provided by Ashlin to support him - something young
horses his age aren't expected to be able to do.

Breakaway Farms at Franktown Meadows
Ashlin Bowen, trainer 4200 Old US Hwy 395 N., Carson City 775-722-4261
www.franktownmeadows.com Breakaway had a great time sending summer off with a bang and taking full advantage of the long sunny days! With two
local shows and one on the road there was no shortage of activity. We had so much fun co-hosting the SNHSA show held at Franktown Meadows this past August. It was a huge success, with so many friendly faces showing up to support our event. The Breakaway Team brought their game faces with Leora Chase taking home multiple blues in the Short Stirrup; Ava Mellum taking second in her crossrail class in her first event over fences; Kate Kassity on Rembrandt took 1st in the Mini Medal; Brook Gutheil won the cross rail class; and Caylin Beard and MacLean Sennhenn were all smiles taking their ponies around the W/T and poles course. The Meadow View Farms SNHSA show was another hit with the Breakaway crew. Rachel Roberts on the Hoeger's Stonewall Adonis found their way to 1st in their jumper class; Lyn Mundt's Stratos took the blues in both the Level 3 and 4 Jumpers; Leora Chase and Ava Mellum dominated the Short Stirrup with multiple top placing ribbons each; William MacLean on Coconut Key made their debut showing together and won the Almaden Medal; and MacLean Sennhenn and Caylin Beard made waves with their awesome rounds in the W/T and Poles course, both taking home blue ribbons; Brook Gutheil made a great show of riding and skill in the cross rail division; and Lynne MacLean's Gold Hills Make My Day
cleaned up in the cross rail division with beautiful rounds laid down by the young up and coming pony. Sonoma's Strides and Tides was one for the record books: William MacLean on Coconut Key made a clean sweep
winning in grand style the Norcal 3', the Onondarka, and the PCHA 14 and Under! Congratulations Will on laying down consistent round after consistent round of skillful and well thought out rides on a horse he had only ridden a handful of times before setting off to Sonoma! We are so impressed with this young man's riding and can't wait to see what's in store for us at Finals! Sonoma had great rounds to go around for all! Lyn Mundt's Stratos put in a spectacular showing in the 1.30m taking a
2nd and 3rd, and catching the eye of his now new home. Congratulations Lyn on the sale of the wonderful young horse you bred and brought along. We will miss having his sweet personality in the barn, but are eager to see him succeed in his new home with Alex Volpi at Harley Brown Equestrian! Cartagena and Ashlin Bowen ribboned in the competitive 1.10m with a 2nd and 6th. Cin City B.A. and Ashlin finished 4th in the $2,000 1.30 Open Classic. Aimee Lafayette rode Meagan McDonald's Viking into the ribbons in the Norcal Eq Classic 18-35, as well as finishing 4th in the Norcal 3'. Lynne Garnett's wonderful pony Land's End Miss Moppet, ridden beautifully by MacLean Sennhenn found themselves winning two of their competitive W/T classes. Emily Bell did a wonderful job of showing Miss Moppet as well, finishing their week in the Child Pony Hunters with a blue ribbon. The Breakaway crew is looking forward to co-hosting the SNHSA Benefit show and Finals, and we look forward to seeing you all there!

Super September at Maplewood
More than 100 professionals attended the Maplewood Super September Clinic series, which included the Young Horse Trainer School, Sport Horse Conformation Seminar, Hunter and Jumper Course Design School, Hunter and Equitation Judge's School and the USHJA Trainer Certification Program Clinic.
This educational series, featuring Hall of Fame and Olympic-caliber clinicians from North and South America, included Linda Allen, Chris Collman, Dr. Daniel Marks, Dr. Chrysann Collatos, Jose Alejos, Mauricio Benavente, Scott Hofstetter, Juliana Zunde and Julie Winkel, started Sept. 5 and concluded Sept. 19. The series attracted attendees from throughout the United States and Canada.
"It was sad the local professionals couldn't participate, other than Meadowview Farm's Joe and Sarah Mullins," said Julie
Winkel. "Due to popular demand, we've already applied for approval from the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Hunter Jumper Association for our September 2018 clinics. We look forward to continuing this unique educational experience."
In other news, we're excited to have 10 new horses in training and/or for sale, and we're looking forward to the North American Westfalen Inspection on Sept. 25. Keep up with us on Facebook to see our new sale horses as well as those bought and sold!
