INTRODUCTION Membrane Technology Is a Technology Which Selectively
Separates (Fractionates) Materials Via Pores or Minute Gaps In The Molecular Arrangement Of a Continuous Structure
The Reject Water Disposal Is Considered As a Major Challenge in Engineering Discipline. As a Consequences, Huge Generation of reject water (effluents from plants or industry) is normally viewed as a severe environmental threat
The intensifying demand of potable water led to several significant improvements in applications of membrane technology in water and waste water treatment.

MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY & IT’S TYPES Based on driving force membrane are
classified as 1. Pressure driven membranei. Microfiltration (0.1-3 micron, 1-30 psi)ii. Ultrafilteration (0.01-0.1 micron,1-30 psi)iii. Nanofilteration (>0.002 micron, 75-150 psi)iv. Reverse osmosis (>2nm,150-500 psi)2 .Electrically driven membranev. Electrodylasis

DESIGN PARAMETERS Following factors to be consider while
designing membrane system include membrane life, membrane fouling & disposal of concentrate
Two types of membrane configuration used in distillery plant is Hollow fibre & Spiral wound
Membranes are typically made from polymeric materials, although ceramic & metal oxide membranes are also available
Although ceramic & metal oxide membranes are more costly than other types, they are used for many industrial processes because they can withstand very high temperature

APPLICATIONS OF MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY IN INDUSTRIES
1) Nuclear waste treatment 2) Removal of dissolved gases in fertilizers
industry 3) Use in textiles industry 4) Reuse of waste water in car washing
treatment5) Used in electricity generation

ADVANTAGES OF MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY 1. Membrane technology is less costly as
compared to other counterparts 2. This technology promotes green
environment 3. Commonly used in pharma, food,
beverages, tanneries, rubber & automotive plants
4. Use of water is done effectively as it reduces , recycle & reuse
CURRENT MARKET AND FORECAST The global demand for membrane technology was
estimated at approx 15.6billion US dollar in 2012. It is expected to grow around 8% annually in next
years. It is forecast to increase to 21.22 billion US dollar in 2016 and 25billion in 2018
Globally north America is largest market for membrane technology. In Europe membrane technology is rapidly growing sector with many industries investing in it
Asia is fastest growing region in membrane technology
Institute named “institute on membrane technology” is set up in china
