WHAT IS A CALCUTTA?A Calcutta is an exciting evening which generates a prize pool to be won by the winning syndicate (table) who end up owning the right to a horse in the
Melbourne Cup.
Step OneAllocation of horses is drawn at random, via a raffle, from your
table’s entry tickets purchased before the event (minimum investment of $50 per person, tickets thereafter $10 each).
Step TwoAn auction is then conducted allowing all tables the opportunity to bid on the
ownership of horses, regardless of who won that horse in the initial raffle draw.If the owner of a horse from the initial raffle is outbid during the auction, 50% of
the value of the final bid is awarded to the original owner and the remaining 50% is added to the prize pool.
Step ThreeThe aggregate value of all horses auctioned off on the night is the value of the
prize pool. The breakdown of the payout is 1st 70%, 2nd 20%, 3rd 10%, 4th $1,000, 5th $750 and 6th $500 and is settled the following Monday.
